Chill Out is a multiplayer map in Halo: Combat Evolved. It is considered by some players the best map for 2v2 and 1v1.

It was remade as Cold Storage for Halo 3.

Summary

Based on a floor of steaming nitrogen and Covenant-made rooms, Chill Out is an extremely varied map and asymmetrical, providing a very good multiplayer experience. The color scheme (pink/purple) is similar to Midship.

This map is both for Xbox and PC/Mac. The level does not have any bases, as there are rooms inside of a building making up the level. It is a very closed in map, making great combat with minimal people. With the unique bridge and varied symmetry, Chill Out is a unique CTF map, as one team usually does more defense than the other.

Combat

Regular Weapon Locations

Strategic Points

  • The Bridge (Recognized by a split into two sections, leading out from each base)
  • Ladders (Leading out from doorways providing overviews of courtyard areas)
  • The Window (See upper right side of the above picture) (The large, elevated open 'window' that overlooks both large connected rooms. With some skill, you can jump onto this from the ledge that spawns the Rocket Launcher. This 'window' is very thin and you can easily fall off. You will also be very visible with no cover if someone knows what you are doing. If they do not, however, you have free range to shoot any unsuspecting players on the ground, anyone on the bridge, and even fire on people coming out of the elevated hallway from the teleporter.

Recommended Gametypes

  • Gametypes should usually be Free for All due to the non-symmetrical nature of the map.
  • Rockets - This makes up a very explosive match, you will rarely survive to get more than 3 kills.
  • Oddball - This gametype is fun, because the ball-carrier has a nav-point on them, making them a walking target.
  • King of the Hill - It is hard to control the hill for a long time, resulting in a very competitive match.

Strategies

Due to the straight forward nature of the map, the Shotgun, Plasma Rifle and Needler are ideal weapons. In addition, as there are several tall structure, one of which contains the rocket launcher. This is ideal for slowing down pursuers and/or inflicting heavy casualties on groups of enemies. In addition, attaining this weapon prevents the other team from getting it, as the rocket launcher only spawns there. However, do it quickly, as there will be heavy competition.

Trivia

  • This map could have been an attacked Covenant structure, evident by the destroyed paths and walls and all the mist on the floor; it could also have been a quick and vicious Flood attack, but because of the lack of any trace of the Flood, this is less than believable. This map could also be a Covenant Facility under construction, or a pre-existing Covenant Research Facility. Evidence suggesting this are the silver pillars that are hung off the ground by what looks to be purple machines. There is also Covenant circuitry found throughout the map.
  • There is a window near the sniper rifle and teleporter exit that has a secret room on the other side. The only way to get into the room is by using a teleporter glitch to get to the top of the level and falling in.
  • The name "Chill Out" could be a reference to the fact that the floor seems to be made of nitrogen, which is a chemical known for being able to freeze objects completely through when in liquid form.
  • As a special announcement for [MLG] San Diego, plans were unveiled by Lukems and Shishka to remake Chill Out for Halo 3. The remake is called Cold Storage and at one time held its own playlist on Halo 3 matchmaking.
