Condemned is an asymmetrical multiplayer arena map in Halo: Reach released as part of the Defiant Map Pack.[2][5]
Universe and lore[edit]
- Main article: Gamma Station
Condemned is set on an intact section of the severely damaged communications platform Gamma Station in orbit of the planet Reach toward the very end of the Covenant's assault on the planet in 2552. Prior to the Covenant invasion, the station provided long range communications for UNSC fleets and served as a vital lifeline between Reach and Earth. During the Battle of Reach, the station suffered terrible punishment, but a few fortified sections remain intact.[2] Adjacent to the station, a lone Paris-class heavy frigate and a Ceudar-pattern heavy corvette can be seen trading shots with each other against the backdrop of a glassed Reach, its atmosphere and surface roiling with fire and molten rock.[4][3]
Overview[edit]
Layout[edit]
Condemned is broadly circular map with five multi-floor main areas connected to each other. Each of the fourth main areas (Repair Bay, Communications, Tram Station, and Generator) are connected to adjacent area with hallways; all four are connected to the middle of the map, Center Core, which has low gravity and shield doors that block off weapon fire from adjacent rooms.
Callouts[edit]
The following are locations on the map that are so named on the player's heads-up display during gameplay:
- Stairwell
- Repair Bay
- Communications
- Comm Hallway
- Observation Deck
- Tram Station
- Generator
- Center Core
- Space
Variants[edit]
- Uplink[citation needed]
Production notes[edit]
Certain Affinity looked at Halo 2's multiplayer map Lockout for reference on this map's close combat environment. An original idea for Condemned was to be darkened and "creepy," though this idea was removed when the developers realized players could get lost easily in a dark and industrialized environment.[6][7]
Trivia[edit]
- This is one of two maps in Halo: Reach to feature locations previously described in the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach, the other being Highlands.
- The glassed Reach seems to share the same fiery effects of the Kill Ball.
- There are Banshees and Sabres fighting each other in the space battle outside the map. However, the Banshees use the model of regular atmospheric Banshees rather than Space Banshees.
- There appears to be a third moon of Reach, which is strange as all official material states that there are only two. Csodaszarvas and Turul can be seen just above Reach, while a second Csodaszarvas can be seen in the glass roof of Center Core.
