Template:Armor Infobox EVA-class Mjolnir (Extra Vehicular Activity), also known as the MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor/V variant, is a MJOLNIR armor variant produced by the Materials Group. It is designed to improve the survivability of Spartans when performing extra-vehicular activity in the vacuum of space.[1][2]

GEN1 overview

The EVA helmet was developed using data gathered from the Summa Deep Space Incident

Specifications

The EVA variant for the Mark IV still required a T-PACK for maneuvering in zero gravity.[1] The Mark V EVA variant had a shielded visor.[3] The Mark VI EVA variant focuses on increasing exo-atmospheric endurance and improving mobility in zero gravity without the original use of back thrusters.[2] The helmet also contains a single-beam laser TEAMCOM system for communications.[1]

Development history

As early as 2525 developmental Mjolnir permutations utilized physical architecture that would eventually be used for EVA.[4] The MJOLNIR/V variant was developed and tested at a UNSC Low/Zero Gravity Testing Facility facility in Lister, Aigburth on Ganymede, integrating feedback gathered from the Summa Deep Space Incident.[3]

The EVA variant has spawned numerous offshoots and is generally renowned for its reliability, ergonomics, and modularity— features to which the design's enduring popularity is often attributed.[5] After the first wave of GEN2 systems, based on requests of veteran Spartan-II and Spartan-III operatives, the UNSC Ordnance Commission considered reassessing a refined and upgraded version of the Mark V EVA, specifically the customized suit worn by Emile-A239 complete with the death's head engraving on the visor. This led to the creation of the WRATH-class Mjolnir. In addition, the INDOMITABLE-class Mjolnir's right shoulder pad is based off the Mark V EVA shoulders.[6]

Usage

On 2531, Kurt-051 used the Mark IV variant of the armor on a mission alongside Blue Team in Construction Platform 966A.[1] A user of the Mark V variant of the armor was Emile-A239, who engraved a death's head on the visor.[3]

GEN2 overview

Classic variant of MJOLNIR GEN1 designed for extra-vehicular activity operations.

Specifications

The GEN2 EVA armor is similar to its GEN1 counterparts in its design. This variant's helmet uses an open-view visor system typical of EVA configurations. It has 59-L20 Aureole braces in the helmet for awareness improvement.[8] The helmet can also be paired with all milspec hardshell and mechanical counterpressure suits.[9]

The slim-contoured chest plate lowers physical profile dramatically. This variant also uses larger pauldrons than previous models.[8]

Development history

Due to their long-standing history of investment Materials Group retained the production rights after the Human-Covenant War. It remains the most effective option for Spartan personnel engaged in exoatmospheric and zero-gravity scenarios. It was tested in WG/Facility 58-32/B5D.[8]

Though EVA-class armor is fully compliant with the strictest UNSC specifications for vacuum-rated environment suits, Material Groups has continued to optimize safety and protective features relevant for combat in the harshest microgravity regimes.[9]

Usage

Spartan Kelly-087 used this armor during Operation: RETRIBUTION on December 2553.[10]

Deviations

GEN2 compatibility

The GEN1 EVA helmet remains popular as late as 2558 and can still be requisitioned by Spartans for use with their next-generation GEN2 suits.[5]

In-game information

Halo 3 - Mark VI GEN1

Helmet

Unlock: Unlock Campaign Complete: Normal achievement.

  • Description: The Mjolnir/V variant was developed and tested at UNSC facilities in Lister, Aigburth on Ganymede, integrating feedback gathered from the Summa Deep Space Incident.

The EVA armor's helmet is aesthetically similar to the Semi Powered Infiltration (or SPI) armor's helmet. The visor is smaller than the Mark V variant. However, the rim from the jaw down to the chin is thinner, including the breathers, and the back of the head has a quarter-sphere shape. The helmet is also much more rounded than the SPI helmet. The helmet may have its characteristic visor for complete field of vision during space operations. It vaguely resembles the Security helmet, as they both share a very large visor. Because of this, it has been dubbed the "Fish Bowl" and the "Sniper Magnet" by some gamers due to the prominent, brightly colored, spherical shape of its visor.

Shoulders

Unlock: Complete The Ark level on Normal, Heroic, or Legendary difficulty.

  • Description: Developed at the UNSC Low/Zero Gravity Testing Facility on Ganymede, the Mjolnir/V variant focuses on increasing exoatmospheric endurance and improving mobility in zero gravity.

The shoulder pauldrons are larger than the standard MJOLNIR plates and feature a long attachment to their center, another similarity to the SPI armor, which could be radios. The pauldrons also cover more surface area than other shoulder pieces.

Chest

Unlock: Complete Tsavo Highway on Normal, Heroic, or Legendary difficulty.

  • Description: In developing the Mjolnir Mark VI Powered Assault Armor/V variant, emphasis was placed on increasing exoatmospheric endurance and improving mobility in zero gravity without the use of thrusters.

The chest plate is a seemingly standard MJOLNIR chest plate set with a small and minor attachment. The attachment consists of a small metal plate connected to a piece of black alloy that has several unknown equipment pieces set into it. It has been speculated that the compartment on the chest plate holds a cable that could be attached to docking ports so that a SPARTAN-II does not drift into space.

MCC

  • Description: EVA variants emphasize improved mobility and endurance in zero gravity, without the use of thrusters.

Halo: Reach - Mark V GEN1

Helmet

The MJOLNIR V [V] variant was developed and tested at the UNSC facilities in Lister, Aigburth, Ganymede.
Base cost: 30,000 cR, Major

  • Description: The EVA helmet was developed using data gathered from the Summa Space Incident.

CNM cost: 7000 cR, Major

  • Description: Command network module; standard issue to UNSC Special Forces unit commanders.

UA/HUL[3] cost: 15,000 cR, Lt. Colonel

  • Description: Up-armored variant with hardened 3rd generation uplink module for MILINT acquisition.

Helmet [C]

Base cost: 120,000 cR, Commander, requires EVA base

  • Description: The EVA helmet was developed using data gathered from the Summa Space Incident.

CNM cost: 25,000 cR, Commander

  • Description: Command network module; standard issue to UNSC Special Forces unit commanders.

UA/HUL[3] cost: 140,000 cR, Commander

  • Description: Up-armored variant with hardened 3rd generation uplink module for MILINT acquisition.

The Mk. V variant features a large visor. It bears a striking visual similarity to the SPI helmet. A second EVA helmet, EVA [C], has a skull pattern engraved on the visor. The [C] likely stands for "Custom" or "Carved".

Two upgrades are available for the helmet, the first adds a Command Network Module on the left side (CNM), and the second adds an Up-Armor plate with a Hardened Uplink Module-3rd Generation on the right side (UA/HUL[3]).

Two upgrades are available for the [C] variant of the helmet as well, the first adds a Hardened Uplink Module on the right side (incorrectly called CNM, should be designated HUL), and the second adds an Up-Armor plate with a Hardened Uplink Module on the right side (incorrectly called HUL[3], should be UA/HUL). These errors likely have something to do with the [C] variant's attachments having the same names and descriptions as the standard variant.

Shoulders

Developed at the UNSC's Low/Zero Gravity Testing Facility on Ganymede.

Cost: 3,000 cR, Corporal

The shoulder pauldrons are large and bulky, being several inches thick. The attachments on the sides of the pauldrons found in Halo 3 appear to be built into them, instead of hanging out.

In Halo 5: Guardians due to the "Body" having a predefined customisation this armor set permanently has the following parts from Halo 4:

Trivia

  • The EVA helmet bears a resemblance to the Apollo Program's A7L PGA pressure helmet, which was called a "fish bowl" by the astronauts and support staff.
  • Through the Career section of Halo Waypoint, a player that has achieved Milestone 50 (3900 achievement points on all Halo titles) will receive an EVA helmet for their Xbox LIVE avatar.
  • The EVA helmet bears a resemblance to the helmet of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, founding member of the French house music duo Daft Punk.
  • The four skins for EVA in Halo 5: Guardians are named after astronauts Chris Hadfield, Alexey Leonov, Anatoly Solovyev, and Zhai Zhigang. Each astronaut is known for their EVA work: Leonov was the first person to perform a spacewalk; Solovyev holds the record for most spacewalks (16) and most time spent in EVA (over 82 hours); Hadfield and Zhigang were the first citizens of their countries (Canada and China, respectively) to perform spacewalks.
