The battle of Mars was a conflict fought between the Banished and United Nations Space Command on, and in orbit of, Mars on August 2, 2557.
Prelude[edit]
The UNSC had suffered a series of attacks on the Sol system including a sustained campaign in fall of 2552, a Sentinel invasion in 2556, and a Forerunner attack followed by a Covenant attack in July 2557. With so many attacks in such a short period of time, the UNSC Home Fleet had been stretched to its limits, resulting in lacking defensive capabilities that allowed the Banished to slip into the system to test the defenses and conduct a raid on the Misriah Armory facility located at Eos Chasma on the Martian surface.[1]
Battle[edit]
At the time of the attack, only one Epoch-class heavy carrier, UNSC Ozymandias, was on station to defend against the Banished flotilla - consisting of just under a dozen ships. The ships in orbit engaged one another in a prolonged fight lasting three hours, which saw Ozymandias' communications and fusion drives knocked out by a coordinated attack, leaving the carrier dead in space. The ship's commanding officer, Captain Abigail Cole, intended to go down with the ship in order to give the crew a chance to evacuate via lifeboat, though she was evacuated herself by a Spartan after being knocked unconscious.[1]
Despite the carrier's immense outnumbering, it was able to take down the dreadnought commanding the flotilla and three karves before its own destruction.[1]
