The Kewu R'shi'k-pattern rifle 25 is a design pattern variation in the plasma rifle series of weapons employed by the Covenant and its remnants. In common lexicon, the Kewu R'shi'k is colloquially known as the "blood-hand" by Jiralhanae, and consists of a modification of the standard Okarda'phaa intended for Brute use—earning it the moniker of Brute plasma rifle among human forces.

The Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifle is visually almost identical to the standard Okarda'phaa-pattern plasma rifle employed by standard Covenant infantry. While identical in overall shape and form to the Okarda'phaa-pattern plasma rifle, the variant employed by the Jiralhanae features a distinctive crimson red outer shell, as opposed to the traditional blue-purple of most Covenant weaponry including the original plasma rifle. The white to red indicator lights on the original plasma rifle are replaced with blue to purple indicators to better stand out against the recolored body. Like other plasma rifles, the precise surface texture and grip design varies from model to model (presumably dependent on design pattern differences), though all function very similarly. Due to its origins in Covenant design language rather than those of the Jiralhanae (such as the Jovokada Workshop brute shot or the Paegaas Workshop Spiker), it is one of few Jiralhanae weapons that doesn't retain a primitive design language and the iconic blades found on almost all other Jiralhane weaponry.

As its name suggests, the Jiralhanae plasma rifle fires plasma as opposed to ballistic ammunition. The weapon is powered from an internal battery cell, and when firing has a power output of 100-150 KV @ 2~3 dA, and can fire 360~540 rounds per minute in fully-automatic fire thanks in part to its dual plasma collimator design. Placed atop one another, these collimators fire in a "stagger" taking the slow automatic fire of each individual collimator and combining it, this design allows a faster rate of fire and more rounds per second. The Kewu R'shi'k-pattern rifle design boasts a far greater rate of fire than standard Okarda'phaa-pattern plasma rifle variants, alongside a more powerful plasma projectile—though this is mitigated by the more rapid rate of overheating.

The Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifle was in service in some capacity by at least around 2548, with several employed by Atriox and his clan during the Algolis Invasion. By October 2552, Jiralhanae equipped with these plasma rifles were present in the Fleet of Sacred Consecration during its attack on Earth, with Jiralhanae deployed into New Mombasa brandishing the weapons. By this time, the weapons were known to the UNSC, though their method of operation and significance were largely unknown to humanity. Jiralhanae wielding their plasma rifles were later encountered by John-117 during the Fall of High Charity and Thel 'Vadam during the Battle of Installation 05, wherein they used them to combat Sangheili-led separatist forces. The fall of High Charity to the Flood ultimately resulted in the Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifle becoming a rare weapon, and by the time of the later stages of the Battle of Voi and Battle of Installation 00, Jiralhanae troops had begun employing the standard and more easily accessible regular plasma rifle instead of their dedicated Jiralhanae counterpart.

The Brute Plasma Rifle is a Covenant Directed Energy Weapon that uses a superheated ionized gas called Plasma instead of projectile ammunition. The weapon is powered by a battery cell. The weapon has a power output of 100-150 KV @ 2~3 dA, and can fire 360~540 rounds per minute. Unlike the Plasma Pistol, the plasma rifle is capable of semi-automatic and full automatic fire; this is thanks in part to its dual plasma collimator design. Placed atop one another, these collimators fire in a "stagger" taking the slow automatic fire of each individual collimator and combining it, this design allows a faster rate of fire and more rounds per second. The Type-25 DER/J is considerably different than its Sangheili issued counterpart; unlike the standard plasma rifle the Jiralhanae variant fires a weaker bolt, signified by the bolts' red hue - this weaker projectile is compensated by a higher rate of fire, boosting penetration and kinetic impact over its Sangheili issued counterpart. The only visual differences between the two weapons is that it is red and is darker towards the back of it. The top half of the Brute Plasma Rifle is also longer towards the end than its Sangheili counterpart which is a more comfortable hold for Brutes. Unlike other weapons utilized by Brutes, it is not only the only Brute weapon that does not look somewhat primitive, but also the only one that does not have blades for close-quarters combat. So far this variant has only been found in the hands of the Brutes, and even then, only since they have seen a return as front-line combatants.

Against infantry, the lethality of the Jiralhanae Variant of the Type-25 DER is considerably greater than its counterpart due to its higher rate of fire at close range. Injuries inflicted to a victim are severe third-degree burns, this level of injury causes the wound to be cauterized instantly upon impact. Body fluids would be subjected to flash vaporization, inducing a strain or a shock on the body after impact, fluids trapped in organs or arteries in addition to the rapid expansion of heat would cause ruptures or small explosions causing additional damage to the target. Near misses can also cause injury to the target, as they produce severe burns to the area they pass, this can also cause heat trauma or heat stroke from the extreme temperatures of the bolt. Should the plasma impact an object, the impact can cause splash damage creating debris both non-heated and heated that may come into contact with a target, with a crippling or lethal effect. Generally, two hits from either a Plasma Pistol or Plasma Rifle will kill a light or non-armored target. Like its counterpart, over-extended periods of firing can overheat the weapon, causing it to become unusable for a short period of time. In the context of the Halo games, all plasma weapons' strength and lethality are compensated for both the sake of gameplay.
Gameplay
In Halo 2, the Brute Plasma Rifle appears later in the game in the hands of Jiralhanae enemies. It boasts several stat differences from the standard plasma rifle including faster rate of fire, lower damage and accuracy. The weapon did not reappear in Halo 3, but does appear in Halo 3: ODST. However in ODST, the weapon is simply a retextured plasma rifle, and boasts no mechanical or stat differences from the regular Halo 3 plasma rifle. The weapon later reappeared in Halo 5: Guardians in the Memories of Reach update as a power weapon in the Requisition system for use in Warzone. The Brute Plasma Rifle REQ card has the following attributes;

Advantages
*Brute Plasma Rifle
The Type-25 DER/J is a close to medium range weapon, and as such can inflict very high damage at close range. The Jiralhanae variant is strengthened by a higher discharge rate, doubling the rifle's efficiency - this higher discharge rate allows for higher velocity thus doubling the kinetic impact to targets at close range. The Type-25 DER/J can easily kill lightly or non armored targets with two strikes, against heavily armored targets the Type-25 Jiralhanae Variant can inflict double the damage then the standard Type-25 DER. SPARTAN-IIs can dual-wield plasma rifles, doubling their efficiency in close to medium range combat situations. The plasma rifle's high velocity bolt coupled with its kinetic impact to a target can temporarily stun a target like a SPARTAN-II.
**Rarity: Uncommon
**Energy required: 2

Disadvantages
The Brute plasma rifle in Halo 5: Guardians has two variants, the Scale of Soirapt and Sorrow of Teash. The weapon appears in Halo Wars 2 in the hands of Sangheili Enforcers. The Brute plasma rifle was added to the Halo: The Master Chief Collection version of Halo 3 when Halo 3: ODST was added to PC with stats similar to its Halo 2 counterpart.
The Type-25 DER/J is even more prone to overheating than its standard counterpart after expending four percent of its battery because of the rapid cycling, loading, ignition, and release phases; to prevent the weapon from being damaged, the Type-25 DER temporarily shuts down and opens heating vents to allow the excess heat to dissipate before the weapon reactivates. When compared, a single bolt from the Jiralhanae variant of the Type-25 DER is considerably weaker than a bolt from the Sangheili version, this is because in order to achieve a higher rate of fire the temperature of the plasma must be reduced in order to achieve a higher discharge rate without overheating the weapon after a few shots. At 10% charge level, the plasma rifle will begin to misfire, this is due to the battery's inability to deliver enough energy to start and complete the ignition and release phase of operation, hampering the operator's use of the weapon. Human military experts and scientists do not understand how Covenant plasma weapons work, or how they are recharged; as such, when the battery is depleted, the rifle must be discarded or replaced.

The Type-25 DER/J is not suited for long range combat, due to several distinct properties of the weapons operation. The first is the rate of thermal expansion which is determined by the rate of the bloom of the bolt, blooming is the result of plasma breakdown in the air at energy densities of around a megajoule per cubic centimeter. This effect causes the plasma to defocus and disperse energy into the atmosphere. It can be more severe if there is fog, smoke, or dust in the air. As the bolt is accelerated away from the "barrel" of the weapon the plasma begins to decay as a result of the weakening magnetic field. Speed also factors in to this, the faster the bolt is accelerated, the farther the bolt will travel before the temperature of plasma begins to decay and the magnetic field becomes unstable and finally dissipates. As the bolt loses velocity it also loses kinetic damage as it travels longer distances.
Changes from Halo 2 to Halo 3: ODST
*Reduced rate of fire.
*Increased time to overheat.
*Plasma bolts have a much higher velocity.
*Identical to the Type-25 plasma rifle from Halo 3, albeit colored red.
*Cannot be dual-wielded.

Tactics
Changes from Halo 3: ODST to Halo 2: Anniversary
Campaign
*In the campaign, this weapon is identical to its original depiction in every aspect.
*In Halo 2, when facing multiple foes, Dual-Wielding two Brute Plasma Rifles can be a key tactic to winning, especially on Legendary difficulty. Pulling one trigger and then pulling the other one a split second later will result in a storm of plasma bolts that can cut down enemy formations quickly. This can also help when facing the Flood. The downside to this is that the rifles will overheat fairly quickly, leaving the player vulnerable to open fire.
*In multiplayer, this weapon overheats at roughly the same speed.
*A way to overcome the fast overheating issue is to fire one rifle until it overheats and then the other. Firing both in bursts can also prevent overheating and maintain accuracy.
*Increased rate of fire.
*Dual-wielding the Brute Plasma Rifle with a standard Plasma Rifle is another good tactic. The Brute Plasma Rifle will overheat faster and by the time the Elite Plasma Rifle has overheated, the Brute Plasma Rifle will be ready to fire again. This can be useful when facing large quantities of Flood. Note however, that this tactic will drain a lot of power.

Multiplayer and Firefight
Changes from Halo 2: Anniversary to Halo 5: Guardians
*Both Plasma Rifles strip shields better than damaging flesh and armor (and thus, are not as good at eliminating the Halo 2 Brutes as, say, the Battle Rifle), their true value lies in their rate of fire and their ability to stun opponents. In ODST, this ability to take down shields is even more effective, as they can remove a Brute's Energy Shields in a matter of seconds. The brute plasma rifle is also effective against swarms of Drones.
*Increased damage, takes a Spartan's shields down in 4 shots and kills in another 8. A vast improvement over the 18 shot kill Brute Plasma Rifle from Halo 2 and Halo 2: Anniversary.
*A third tactic is to dual wield a Brute Plasma Rifle and a human SMG. This is one of the most powerful combos and can defeat even an Energy Sword wielder. The only disadvantage is that it only works at mid-range, and you need some very good aim because if you fail to aim properly, you may be left with an overheated Plasma Rifle and an empty SMG. In order to combat the lack of SMG's in levels with the Brute Plasma Rifle, try dual wielding a Needler with it as well, as these weapons are normally in huge supply on such levels. Also with this way a good aim isn't a necessity as the needles home in on enemies and damage them this means it is more useful for those that can't aim as well so they can remove enemies shields then kill them with the least amount of ammo needed.
*Overheats much more quickly, similarly to the original Brute Plasma Rifle from Halo 2.
*Like all other weapons in Halo 5: Guardians, it can be smart-scoped.
*Cannot be dual-wielded.

Trivia
Trivia
*The first level that the Brute Plasma Rifle appears in-game is Gravemind.

*In Halo 2 the "wings" on each side of the Brute Plasma Rifle appear to be burnt or distorted, while the Elite version keeps a normal color.
*In Halo 2 the "wings" on each side of the Brute Plasma Rifle appear to be burnt or distorted, while the Elite version keeps a normal color.
*It, along with the Sentinel Beam are the only weapons not shown in the Halo 2 instruction manual.
*It, along with the Sentinel Beam are the only weapons not shown in the Halo 2 instruction manual.
*The Brute Plasma Rifle appears once again in Halo 3: ODST and now replaces the Elite Plasma Rifle version.
*The Plasma Rifle and Needler in Halo 3 have exactly the same rate of fire as the Brute Plasma Rifle. They all start off slowly, then rapidly gain speed until it either overheats, or the battery is drained.
*Bungie may have inserted the Brute Plasma Rifle into the game due to lack of time to create a new Brute weapon. It is arguable that the Brute Plasma Rifle is the predecessor to the Spiker of Halo 3, since both are similar in function and rate of fire.
*The Brute Plasma Rifle has a slightly higher tone than the regular Okarda'phaa, due to the higher rate of fire and Brute design.
*Strangely, the Brute Plasma Rifle only appears by default in one Halo 2 multiplayer map, Turf.
*The Plasma Rifle and Needler in Halo 3 have the exact same rate of fire as the Brute Plasma Rifle. They all start off slowly, then rapidly gain speed until it either overheats, or the battery is drained.
* they are most effective against Brutes.
*The Brute Plasma Rifle has a slightly higher tone than the regular Plasma Rifle, due to the higher rate of fire and Brute design.
*In Halo: The Cole Protocol, it states that modifications of Plasma Rifles by anyone other than the Prophets is considered heresy. It is likely that the Prophets allowed the modification to better suit Brute needs. It is also possible, though less likely, that low level Prophets made them themselves.
*The Yanme'e in Halo 3: ODST are now able to use this weapon with deadly precision. The Drones that use these weapons, are either a pale yellow or red color, and have energy shields like the Sangheili.
*The Yanme'e in Halo 3: ODST are now able to use this weapon with deadly precision. The Drones that use these weapons, are either a pale yellow or red color, and have energy shields like the Sangheili.
*In Halo 3: ODST, the weapon is extremely similar to the regular Halo 3 Plasma Rifle. The pickup is even called a Plasma Rifle instead of a Brute Plasma Rifle, this is because it is a re-skinned version of the Halo 3 Plasma Rifle.
*Initially, when the Brute plasma rifle was added to Halo 5: Guardians, it had the sounds of a plasma pistol. However, after the release of the Warzone Firefight update, the weapon received more unique sound effects.
*In Halo 3: ODST, a Brute with a Brute Plasma Rifle will appear to reload the weapon after using it for awhile, by reaching toward his left calf and seems to be doing the reload animation for a Spiker Rifle. This is not possible however, because the rifle is run by a plasma battery.

The Kewu R'shi'k-pattern rifle[3] (UNSC Type classification: Type-25 Directed Energy Rifle, T-25 DER)[2] is a design pattern variation in the plasma rifle series of weapons employed by the Covenant and its remnants. In common lexicon, the Kewu R'shi'k is colloquially known as the "blood-hand" by Jiralhanae,[4][5] and consists of a modification of the standard Okarda'phaa-pattern plasma rifle intended for Brute use—earning it the moniker of Brute plasma rifle among human forces.

Unlike the standard plasma rifles, historically constructed by Iruiru Armory, the Kewu R'shi'k plasma rifle was specially-commissioned for manufacture in the Sacred Promissory by the Prophet of Truth.[1]

Design details[edit]

Aesthetics[edit]

Mechanism[edit]

As its name suggests, the Jiralhanae plasma rifle fires plasma as opposed to ballistic ammunition. The weapon is powered from an internal battery cell, and when firing has a power output of 100-150 KV @ 2~3 dA, and can fire 360~540 rounds per minute in fully-automatic fire thanks in part to its dual plasma collimator design.[2] Placed atop one another, these collimators fire in a "stagger" taking the slow automatic fire of each individual collimator and combining it, this design allows a faster rate of fire and more rounds per second. The Kewu R'shi'k-pattern rifle design boasts a far greater rate of fire than standard Okarda'phaa-pattern plasma rifle variants, alongside a more powerful plasma projectile—though this is mitigated by the more rapid rate of overheating.

Variants[edit]

While two major designs of "standard" the Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifle have been seen observed in use, several major sub-variants additionally exist;

Operational history[edit]

While the plasma rifle was the standard weapon of the Covenant's officer corps throughout most of the Human-Covenant War, the emergence of Jiralhanae as the Covenant military's front line shock troops saw the emergence of the red variant of plasma rifle to suit their more aggressive demeanour.[2] The weapon was manufactured in secret by the Sacred Promissory under the orders of the Prophet of Truth in preparation for the Jiralhanae's takeover of the Covenant military, with modifications to fire rate and damage that would have been deemed heretical were it not for the hierarch's personal blessing.[4][5]

The Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifle was in service in some capacity by at least around 2548, with several employed by Atriox and his clan during the Algolis Invasion.[8] By October 2552, Jiralhanae equipped with these plasma rifles were present in the Fleet of Sacred Consecration during its attack on Earth, with Jiralhanae deployed into New Mombasa brandishing the weapons.[9] By this time, the weapons were known to the UNSC, though their method of operation and significance were largely unknown to humanity.[2] Jiralhanae wielding their plasma rifles were later encountered by John-117 during the Fall of High Charity[10] and Thel 'Vadam during the Battle of Installation 05[11], wherein they used them to combat Sangheili-led separatist forces. The fall of High Charity to the Flood ultimately resulted in the Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifle becoming a rare weapon, and by the time of the later stages of the Battle of Voi and Battle of Installation 00, Jiralhanae troops had begun employing the standard and more easily accessible regular plasma rifle instead of their dedicated Jiralhanae counterpart.[12]

Despite the collapse of the Covenant, Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifles have seen prominence in the hands of Jiralhanae warlords and raiding groups in the Post-Covenant War conflicts, with newly-manufactured specimens originating from currently-unknown suppliers.[5][13] In 2553, a heavily modified Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifle was employed by Prelate Tem'Bhetek during his ambush of Shadow of Intent, with his regular Jiralhanae forces employing non-modified Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifles.[14] Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifles have since become a mainstay of the Banished. By 2558, Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifles and several sub-variants have been incorporated into UNSC War Games simulations, in which they are wielded by Sangheili Warriors.[15] During their conflict with the UNSC Spirit of Fire on Installation 00 in 2559, Banished Jiralhanae have been witnessed employing the Kewu R'shi'k-pattern plasma rifle in combat as well.[16]

Gameplay[edit]

In Halo 2, the Brute Plasma Rifle appears later in the game in the hands of Jiralhanae enemies. It boasts several stat differences from the standard plasma rifle including faster rate of fire, lower damage and accuracy. The weapon did not reappear in Halo 3, but does appear in Halo 3: ODST. However in ODST, the weapon is simply a retextured plasma rifle, and boasts no mechanical or stat differences from the regular Halo 3 plasma rifle. The weapon later reappeared in Halo 5: Guardians in the Memories of Reach update as a power weapon in the Requisition system for use in Warzone. The Brute Plasma Rifle REQ card has the following attributes;

  • Brute Plasma Rifle
    • Rarity: Uncommon
    • Energy required: 2 energy

The Brute plasma rifle in Halo 5: Guardians has two variants, the Scale of Soirapt and Sorrow of Teash. The weapon appears in Halo Wars 2 in the hands of Sangheili Enforcers. The Brute plasma rifle was added to the Halo: The Master Chief Collection version of Halo 3 when Halo 3: ODST was added to PC with stats similar to its Halo 2 counterpart.

Changes from Halo 2 to Halo 3: ODST[edit]

  • Reduced rate of fire.
  • Increased time to overheat.
  • Plasma bolts have a much higher velocity.
  • Identical to the Type-25 plasma rifle from Halo 3, albeit colored red.
  • Cannot be dual-wielded.

Changes from Halo 3: ODST to Halo 2: Anniversary[edit]

  • In the campaign, this weapon is identical to its original depiction in every aspect.
  • In multiplayer, this weapon overheats at roughly the same speed.
  • Increased rate of fire.

Changes from Halo 2: Anniversary to Halo 5: Guardians[edit]

  • Increased damage, takes a Spartan's shields down in 4 shots and kills in another 8. A vast improvement over the 18 shot kill Brute Plasma Rifle from Halo 2 and Halo 2: Anniversary.
  • Overheats much more quickly, similarly to the original Brute Plasma Rifle from Halo 2.
  • Like all other weapons in Halo 5: Guardians, it can be smart-scoped.
  • Cannot be dual-wielded.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Halo 2 the "wings" on each side of the Brute Plasma Rifle appear to be burnt or distorted, while the Elite version keeps a normal color.
  • It, along with the Sentinel Beam are the only weapons not shown in the Halo 2 instruction manual.
  • The Plasma Rifle and Needler in Halo 3 have exactly the same rate of fire as the Brute Plasma Rifle. They all start off slowly, then rapidly gain speed until it either overheats, or the battery is drained.
  • The Brute Plasma Rifle has a slightly higher tone than the regular Okarda'phaa-pattern plasma rifle, due to the higher rate of fire and Brute design.
  • The Yanme'e in Halo 3: ODST are now able to use this weapon with deadly precision. The Drones that use these weapons, are either a pale yellow or red color, and have energy shields like the Sangheili.
  • Initially, when the Brute plasma rifle was added to Halo 5: Guardians, it had the sounds of a plasma pistol. However, after the release of the Warzone Firefight update, the weapon received more unique sound effects.
