- "Opposition is a good thing for us, brother, do not curse it. While others grow indolent and witless, we will remain vigilant. Their hatred fuels our strength and sharpens our zeal."
- — Severan speaking to Kaevus[1]
Severan is a Jiralhanae War Chief that is the surviving son of Tartarus and leads the Vanguard of Zaladon under the Banished alliance. Severan was appointed by Atriox as the leader of the Banished home fleets not deployed to Zeta Halo.[2] Secretly, Severan was loyal to San'Shyuum High Lord Dovo Nesto and his plans to rebuild the Covenant[3] until Severan was betrayed by Nesto during the Battle of Boundary.[4]
Biography[edit]
Service in the Covenant[edit]
Severan first encountered Nesto in around 2535 when he was still a young warrior within the Covenant. While Severan's father Tartarus was attempting to lay claim to the title of Chieftain of the Jiralhanae in the eyes of the Hierarchs, Nesto took an interest in Severan, becoming his daskalo.[3]
Aftermath of Tartarus' death[edit]
After the death of Tartarus, many Jiralhanae moved against Severan's pack, seeking to eliminate any from within his group that would attempt to take Tartarus' place as Chieftain of the Brutes within the Covenant. All of Severan's siblings were killed as a result of this. By the time these rival packs attempted to take Severan's life, he had already fortified his territory on Warial and defended it with ruthless ferocity. Severan and his clan went on to completely eradicate some of their greatest rivals in all of Oth Sonin. This, along with a few other incidents, was enough to stop most Jiralhanae from continuing to target him. Many now regarded him with some respect and sought an alliance with his group, while others ignored him completely.[1]
Joining the Banished[edit]
As a part of his plans to rebuild the Covenant, Dovo Nesto contacted Severan, promising the Jiralhanae a place at his right hand, appointed as an instrumental part in the Covenant's restoration. First, Severan was to build up the Vanguard of Zaladon, drawing in both his rivals and allies, something that he accomplished with little difficulty.[3]
Severan only considered joining the Banished because his cousin, Choros, had personally requested it. He was uncertain as to the reasons why, but he was confident that Choros sought to protect him and the line of Tartarus. Staying close to the growing numbers of the Banished was one of the best ways to ensure this. Choros firmly believed that although there were many differences between Atriox and Tartarus, Atriox would ultimately find strategic value in allowing Severan into his fold. Although Severan knew there would be potential challenges as a result of this alliance, he saw the advantages it presented and wasted little time in coming to his decision to ultimately join the ranks of the Banished.[1] Severan attained a position as a War Chief in the Banished, something that he and Nesto would use to their advantage when the time came.[3]
Equipment[edit]
Severan is equipped with curved energy arm-blades that rise out of his vambraces, significantly extending his reach in combat. They resemble totemistic weapons used in traditional blade-grappling from Jiralhanae history, but are fashioned from the same shaped plasma as Covenant energy swords.[5]
After being near-mortally wounded, Severan was encased in life-sustaining armor sporting a cylindrical canister secured by his chest with additional armor plating and thick tubes connecting to a respirator that covers his nose and mouth, along with reinforced power gauntlets.[6]
