Champion of Zaladon[2] |
Arxus, also known as the Champion of Zaladon, was a monstrous Jiralhanae from the Vanguard of Zaladon who served Severan and the Banished.
Biography[edit]
Monstrous origins[edit]
As a child, Arxus was taken from his clan by a rival chieftain, who subsequently slit his throat in order to end his bloodline. He survived, however, but he lost the ability to speak. When his adultness came to an end, he hunted down and slaughtered not only the chieftain who mutilated him but his entire clan as well.[2]
During the reign of the Covenant, he was caged by the Sangheili, and was released only to bring devastation to anyone in his path. When the empire fell in late 2552, Arxus was freed by Severan, and the warrior silently swore an oath to him and the Vanguard of Zaladon. Over time, he gained a monstrous reputation within the clan, eventually becoming known as the Champion of Zaladon.[2]
Boundary[edit]
On December 14, 2559, Arxus was a part of War Chief Severan's commanding entourage in Tyrrhen. Severan sent Arxus to hunt down surviving humans, impressing Ectorius with his monstrous savagery.[3]
Arxus later commanded a Gravemaker as it searched for Chloe Hall, the key to using the Lithos to access the Domain.[4] Shortly after detecting Chloe and James Solomon, Arxus' Gravemaker was taken down by James with an M99 Stanchion. As James killed the Banished survivors, Arxus attacked him, quickly disarming James with Graydawn and then attacking him with Blackmaw. Despite his Mark V MJOLNIR armor and Spartan augmentations, James was easily outmatched by Arxus who knocked James out with just two massive blows and kidnapped Chloe,[5] leaving James with two cracked ribs, a concussion, and an abdominal hematoma.[1]
On December 15, as Arxus carried Chloe to the Lithos, James caught up with him again. Spotting the Banished and Sali 'Nyon's Covenant engaging each other, Arxus was visibly upset and picked up his pace. Arxus only spotted James when he was ten meters away, tossing Chloe into an open alleyway as James attacked him. With his first strike, James managed to break Arxus' leg, but the warrior ignored being stabbed in the arm with a combat knife and pulled James into a crushing grip, simply trying to crush the life out of him. However, in his rage and arrogance, Arxus failed to notice James arming an M9 fragmentation grenade. Before Arxus could even react, James shoved the activated grenade down the Jiralhanae's throat where it lodged deep, blocking his airway. The shock of this move drained all life from Arxus' face and he immediately let go of James to claw at his neck in fear and desperation. The grenade detonated, blowing Arxus' head apart, killing him. However, James was left gravely injured,[1] leading to James' subsequent decision to sacrifice himself to ensure Chloe's escape.[6]
Personality and traits[edit]
Arxus was a particularly savage Jiralhanae who enjoyed brutally slaughtering his opponents. While hunting human survivors in Tyrrhen, Arxus was unrushed and confident. He was considered to be a monster by Ectorius[3] and James Solomon[5] with Severan simply stating that such a monster wasn't acquired, but rather forged.[3] James noted that Arxus bellowed in a way that was unnerving for even a Jiralhanae, more animal than sapient.[1]
Arxus was a massive Jiralhanae with immense strength, height and speed, towering over other Jiralhane. His strength was so great that with just two blows, Arxus stunned James despite his Mark V MJOLNIR armor and Spartan augmentations.[5] By grabbing James in a crushing grip, Arxus was able to nearly crush the Spartan to death, severely damaging James' armor and leaving him gravely injured.[1] Severan wondered if the massive warrior was a design of the gods themselves, possibly for the purpose of helping the Banished to seize the Lithos for themselves.[4] After only a short encounter with him, James considered Arxus to be more terrifying than anything that he'd ever encountered before, including the Mgalekgolo pair who had cost James his left arm.[5]
Equipment[edit]
Arxus was armed with a javelin that he called Graydawn and a two-meter khopesh named Blackmaw.[3]
