President of the Unified Earth Government

The President of the Unified Earth Government is the civilian elected position of head of state and head of government of the Unified Earth Government.[1] The president is responsible for selecting members of the cabinet.[2]
The UEG President has the legal authority to direct the actions of the United Nations Space Command military. While this authority is legally absolute, the Chairman of the UNSC Security Council acts as the principle commander for all UEG military assets (presumably including the Colonial Military Authority (CMA) and law enforcement agencies alongside the UNSC) and is authorised to act in the president's stead regarding defence and security.[3] The president issues the commission to officers of the UNSC armed forces, the formal legal document that grants officers their authority.[4] Protection of the president is presumably the responsibility of the UEG's bodyguard corps.[5]
Throughout the Human-Covenant War many functions of civil governance were handed over to the UNSC with emergency powers and declarations of martial law following the loss of the Outer Colonies.[3] After the war's end in late 2552 Fleet Admiral Terrence Hood organized the official transition of power back to the president and the UEG,[6] though the UNSC still retains many of its powers regarding interactions with surviving colonies and affairs on Earth. As such, many view the UEG as a publication relations arm for a military government.[3] In 2553, numerous politicians and academics contended for the office of president.[6] Ultimately, Doctor Ruth Charet was elected to the post on January 8, 2553[7][8][2] and remains in office by March 2558.[9]
During the postwar period, President Charet directed significant funding toward Project Rebirth - the reconstruction of New Mombasa.[10]
