The A'uzr-pattern sword frigate (UNSC three-letter classification: SCC-class sword frigate) is a frigate classification formerly in the service of the navy of the Covenant, and now prominently used by the Swords of Sanghelios. The ship is one of several design pattern variations under the SCC three-letter designation.[1] These vessels may be colloquially referred to as command frigates, owing to their role in the fleet.

Overview

Design details

The A'uzr bears a heavy resemblance to the overall form of the Ceudar-pattern heavy corvettes of the Covenant, though whether this was by intent or accident is presently unknown. The ship has a generally bulbous appearance, with two hangars lining both of the port and starboard sides of the vessel alongside an number of smaller viewing ports. The overall form of the vessel has been noted by the naval artisans of the Kolaar Manufactorum to resemble the tatir - a large, dart-shaped predator known to hunt in the warmer waters of Sanghelios. Whether this creature was an active influence on the frigate's design is unknown.[1]

The ship's overall resemblance (both in form and function) to the Ceudar corvette is sometimes used by canny shipmasters to mask its presence in space warfare.[1]

Usage

Throughout the reign of the Covenant, A'uzr-pattern vessels were used as command ships for fleet detachments like those assigned as security and enforcement details for the empire's outlying tithe worlds. Most were destroyed in the Great Schism and the various civil wars that followed, though have managed to find their way into Swords of Sanghelios service - deemed too valuable to overlook. The Swords of Sanghelios have taken some of these ships and modified their designs, alongside using them as a basis for research into the secrets of design patterns kept hidden by the San'Shyuum until the empire's dissolution - with the goal of preventing deviations or mutations such as those exhibited in the Zanar-pattern light cruiser. Some of the Swords' changes to the design of their command frigates (in particular Sword of Harmony) incorporate novel changes that would have never been considered by the San'Shyuum bureaucracy of the Covenant.[1]

Production notes

The A'uzr was originally designed by concept artist Glenn Israel during the production of Halo: Reach, as an alternate design for the Covenant corvette prominently featured in-game. The unused design was later reused by 343 Industries to represent the Sangheili command frigate featured in Halo: Outcasts, with art modifications done by concept artist Salvatorre Yazzie.[1]
