The Battle of Alpha Aurigae was a major battle in the early years of the Human-Covenant War. The human fleet, consisting of 117 ships under the command of Admiral Preston Cole,[1] engaged twelve Covenant warships, destroying the enemy force but losing a total of thirty-seven ships in the process.[2] It was one of the rare naval victories for the UNSC.

The short story The Impossible Life and the Possible Death of Preston J. Cole clearly states that Cole had one hundred seventeen ships under his command, though Halo Wars: Genesis states he had 107. The number provided in the short story is an obvious reference to John-117.
