Destroyer[1] is a warship classification that was used by the Covenant, before the empire's collapse in 2552.[2][3][4]
Background
There are three known classes of destroyers: the Sinaris-pattern heavy destroyer, the Wik-pattern light destroyer, and an unidentified classification of which only one example is known, represented by the Defender of Faith. An additional so-called "super-destroyer" has been referenced by United Nations Space Command personnel in naval warfare, though this is an informal term used to describe the Rasus-pattern interdictor. CPV-class destroyers were seen in various battles early in the Human-Covenant War,[5][6] while a slightly smaller RPV-class destroyer was present during the Battle of Sigma Octanus IV in July 2552.[1]
In general, Covenant destroyers are very well-armed, boasting multiple point-defense pulse laser turrets, plasma turrets, energy projectors, and a full complement of Seraph fighters. The destroyer's weapons are so potent that UNSC Navy Captain Jacob Keyes remarked that they turned UNSC ships into "Swiss cheese" in many engagements.[7]
This warship classification features the distinctive three-section design of most heavier Covenant warships, mirroring the deadliness of its larger counterparts. Destroyers are often used as escorts for fleets or task forces and are able to hold their own in combat, while protecting more valuable ships from enemy threats.[2]
