As the basic type of the fairly inclusive [[Sentinel]] class, Aggressors are generally referred to simply as '''Sentinels'''.{{Ref/Reuse|EVG}}

A '''Sentinel''' is a primordial [[Forerunner]]-constructed automated electronic construct with a limited [[Artificial Intelligence]] that is made specifically to kill and contain [[Flood]].
==Overview==
[[File:Halo3-21146876-Full-crop.jpg|250px|left|thumb|[[John-117]] has a face-to-face encounter with an Aggressor Sentinel on [[Installation 00]].]]
===Design details===
Aggressor Sentinels have two arm-like appendages, with two fine manipulators at the end of each arm. Their central head rests above a curved undercarriage generally housing an offensive [[Sentinel beam|sterilization beam]]. Their powerful beam weapons and defensive energy shields make them very effective in combat against intruders or foreign objects that present themselves as threats. Aggressor Sentinels are also equipped with a small [[reconstitution emitter]], which uses lasers to repair damaged [[Forerunner]] constructs in conjunction with [[Constructor]]s and for self-repair should the Aggressors be damaged in combat.{{Ref/Reuse|encyclopedia}} Aggressors are propelled by both an anti-gravity unit located on the undercarriage and small, exotic form of [[impulse drive]] which enables them to travel at high speeds.{{Ref/Reuse|h4evg}} They are also capable of tapping into their installation's [[teleportation grid]].{{Ref/Reuse|h4evg}}

==Introduction==
There are at least two major variants of the Aggressor Sentinel. The standard model is gray or silver in color while the specialized [[Aggressor Sentinel Eliminator]] is golden. The differences between the two variants lie solely on their offensive and defensive systems, with the Eliminator sporting superior weaponry and shielding systems.{{Ref/Level|Id=SI|H2|Level=Sacred Icon}}{{Ref/Level|Id=QZ|H2|Level=Quarantine Zone}}{{Ref/Reuse|HINF}}
'''Sentinels''' were designed to guard the [[Halo Array]] Installations and many other [[Forerunner]] constructs, and are under the jurisdiction of the local [[Monitor]]. They are hovering drones armed with energy weapons called [[Sentinel Beam|Sentinel Beams]]. The Sentinels were constructed by the Forerunners for the purpose of combating the Flood, though it is implied that prior to the Flood being discovered, they or at least a previous model of them, were used as assistants or repair drones, considering the fact that they possess simple interactable arms with which they have been seen to use (one in [[Halo 3]] used these arms to analyze the [[Master Chief]], before retracting them and flying off). The reason for the Sentinels use as combatants is invulnerability to Flood infection, slowing down the parasite's growth and consumption. When not engaged in combat, Sentinels contract into smaller forms, concealing their weaponry and using smaller lasers to repair and manage the area around them. Some Sentinels are equipped with [[Energy Shields]], though all Sentinels can be easily destroyed by [[Plasma|Plasma weapons]], and with slightly less efficiency [[human]] weapons such as the [[Assault Rifle]]. Sentinels also appear to utilize a high-speed method of propulsion when they need to travel great distances, as witnessed by [[UNSC]] forces on the [[Ark]].

==Functions==
Aggressors are created at [[Sentinel manufacturing facility|specialized manufacturing facilities]] located on every [[Halo Array|Halo installation]] and on other key Forerunner installations.{{Ref/Reuse|encyclopedia}} These facilities can consist of large airborne platforms or [[Sentinel factory|subterranean factories]] where Aggressors are birthed in nanomachine vats and programmed to serve.{{Ref/Reuse|QZ}}{{Ref/Game|Id=HW|HW}}{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p326|Enc22|Page=326}} Each Forerunner installation has its own design of the Aggressor Sentinel, but they all share the same basic structure and purpose.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22}}
[[Image:1216051911 Sentinel.jpg|thumb|left|260px|The unique shielding that protects Sentinels of the Ark.]]
Sentinels have been known to have been created long before [[Installation 04]] was ever even conceived. They operated automated facilities such as [[Gas Mine]]s like the one found on [[Threshold]] for "untold centuries" before the facility was redesigned to research the Flood. Therefore it is possible that they were only outfitted for combat ''after'' the Flood was discovered. They also have the ability to combine their fire power and shield strenght to increase their deadlyness.

On the level ''[[The Arbiter (Level)|The Arbiter]]'', as you enter the main hangar with the [[Seraph]] fighter, you can see one Sentinel firing a green beam at the Seraph, the same as the ones used by the [[Constructor]] drones in the level [[Sacred Icon (Level)|Sacred Icon]]. This shows that at least some Sentinels serve to repair functions. You can also see the Sentinels carrying [[Gas Container]]s. Also in The Ghosts of Onyx it says that some sentinals formed into diggers using there combined laser fire.
===Operation===
[[File:H3 Sentinel Shielding.jpg|thumb|250px|An Aggressor Sentinel's energy shield.]]
Aggressor Sentinels were deployed in massive numbers during the [[Forerunner-Flood war]].{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22}} Unlike their own [[Warrior-Servant|biological soldiers]] that could be converted into biomass, the mechanical nature of the Aggressor Sentinels allowed the Forerunners to battle the [[Flood]] without contributing to its numbers.{{Ref/Reuse|encyclopedia}} Billions are estimated to be active across the myriad of Forerunner installations where they are utilized as all-purpose workers and guards.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22}} Following the construction of the Halo Array, they were installed on the ringworlds as their first line of defense against Flood outbreaks and other external threats. Controlled by their own basic ancilla functions, as well as their installation's [[monitor]], Aggressors patrol the installation's vast terrain and network tunnels tirelessly and attack as their protocol demands.<ref name="encyclopedia">'''[[Halo Encyclopedia (2009 edition)]]''', "Chapter 8", ''page 226-227''</ref>

When not in combat, Aggressors serve as basic repair, maintenance, and security drones for Forerunner installations and facilities where Flood samples are kept, working in conjunction with [[Constructor]]s and [[Enforcer]]s to ensure that the facility remains in working order.{{Ref/Reuse|SI}}

The later, combat enabled Sentinels are the protectors of the Halo installations, and are controlled by the Monitor of the Installation. Their primary purpose is to contain small outbreaks of [[Flood]], however they can only manage the Flood for a short time.<ref>''[[Halo Combat Evolved]]'', ''The Library''.</ref> Should an outbreak grow beyond the Sentinels' ability to control, [[Enforcers]] and shielded [[Sentinel Majors]] are activated by the [[Monitor]] of the Installation to assist the Sentinels.
The [[keyship]] ''[[Anodyne Spirit]]'' was equipped with its own contingent of Aggressor Sentinels. The [[San'Shyuum]] managed to adapt these machines to serve them in a combat support role, using them in battles during the [[War of Beginnings]] before the [[Covenant]]'s formation.<ref>'''Halo: Broken Circle''', ''pages 6, 9''</ref> The war depleted the keyship's Sentinel contingent almost completely, and the few that remained in ''[[High Charity]]'' were regarded as relics to be preserved and were no longer used in combat.<ref>'''Halo: Broken Circle''', ''page 189''</ref>

[[File:H2A FirinMahLazer.png|thumb|225px|left|An Aggressor Sentinel firing its sterilization beam.]]
Aggressor Sentinels are the first automated defense systems to assist a in a given situation and generate a proper response protocol, deploying to an area of interest via [[Sentinel launcher|wall-mounted launchers]].{{Ref/Reuse|SI}}{{Ref/Reuse|HINF}} While Aggressors are strong enough to handle small-scale battles, they are more of a supplement rather than a reliable combat system. The Aggressors' weapons systems are limited and not as powerful as some of the other Forerunner weapons employed against the Flood.{{Ref/Reuse|SI}}{{Ref/Reuse|QZ}} Because of their limited ancilla, they are only individually able to handle situations on a basic scale, which makes them vulnerable to strategic Flood attacks.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22p326}} Their limited intelligence means they are often unable to perform evasive maneuvers when facing imminent attack and are usually destroyed.{{Ref/Reuse|SI}}{{Ref/Reuse|QZ}}{{Ref/Reuse|HINF}} In overwhelming numbers, Aggressors are capable of impressive coordination and are more than capable of handling a situation for a certain time until more permanent measures can be applied.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22p326}}

They are equipped with an energy weapon called a [[Sentinel Beam]] which they fire in a sweeping motion in [[Halo: Combat Evolved]]. In the other Halos, it is mostly just a single beam instead of a trail behind it. The Sentinel Beam comes in two types, red and blue. The blue is more powerful than the red, though it overheats much faster. In ''[[Halo 2]]'' and ''[[Halo 3]]'', after a Sentinel is destroyed, these weapons can be picked up and wielded by a foot soldier. In ''[[Halo: Combat Evolved]]'', when the sentinel is destroyed, the weapon is destroyed also. Because of this it is impossible to get a [[Sentinel Beam]] in Halo 1. When not engaged in [[combat]], they contract into smaller forms, concealing their weapon. In later levels of ''Halo 2'', [[Sentinel Majors]] with personal [[energy shields]] and a more powerful blue beam make their debut, though all Sentinels are easily destroyed by [[plasma]] weapons.
The Aggressor's energy shield is their primary defense mechanism. Once taken down, it is susceptible to small-arms fire. When an Aggressor has been damaged beyond repair, it explodes violently and releases a powerful [[electromagnetic pulse]], a tactical last resort that disables all nearby electronics.{{Ref/Reuse|SI}}{{Ref/Reuse|QZ}} If all other members of a swarm of Aggressors have been destroyed, the last remaining Aggressors have, on occasion, been observed to overload their core while attempting to ram nearby belligerents.{{Ref/Reuse|HINF}}

When a Sentinel is destroyed by any kind of explosive weapon or any weapon that can do a lot of damage in one shot it causes a blue EMP blast that has an extremely large radius, which can deplete personal energy shields, [[Jackal]] arm shields, temporarily shutdown nearby Sentinels, can cause [[Grunts]] and Jackals to cover their head with their hands and can rarely even kill an [[Elite]] or [[Spartan]] if their shields are already down.
[[File:HW2-Sentinel bombardment.png|thumb|250px|Thousands of Aggressors swarming the ''[[Enduring Conviction]]''.]]
When faced with a single threat of sufficient physical size, such as a [[capital ship]], Aggressors have been known to deploy en masse and create a swarm. Instead of using their individual weapons, they fly in formation and use their bodies as projectiles, causing enough damage to end the threat. This was seen during the [[Second Ark Conflict|conflict]] on [[Installation 00]] in [[2559]], when ''[[Enduring Conviction]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[energy projector]] was fired upon the surface of the Ark, breaking the installation's outer crust. Thousands of Aggressors on the installation were quick to respond, using their combined mass to tear the ship's hull apart and cut it into two pieces.<ref>'''[[Halo Wars 2]]'''</ref>

In ''Halo: Combat Evolved'', Sentinels will give off sparks for several seconds if they take serious damage. Also, if a Sentinel gets hit (usually by a [[Flood]] [[Combat Form]]) it makes a metal clang noise and does nothing. When destroyed, they will crash to the floor and violently explode with enough force to seriously hurt or even kill unshielded enemies. The same happens in ''[[Halo 2]]'', but being hit with an [[Energy sword]] will cause it to explode and release an EMP blast. In ''[[Halo 3]]'', no matter what weapon is being used, a Sentinel getting [[Melee|hit]] will send it flying a few feet away, giving off a small EMP blast when it explodes.

[[File:AggressorSentinelEvolution-RefChart.jpg|thumb|350px|Evolution of the Aggressor Sentinel's design from ''Halo: Combat Evolved'' to ''Halo 4''.]]
===Changes from ''Halo: Combat Evolved'' to ''Halo 2''===
* The Aggressor Sentinel received a graphical update.
* There are now unshielded Aggressor Sentinels
* There are now two variants of Aggressor Sentinel: The standard grayish-silver and gold variants.
* The Aggressor Sentinel's [[Sentinel beam|beam weapon]] can now be used when the Sentinel is destroyed.

During the last level of ''Halo 3'', ''[[Halo (Halo 3 Level)|Halo]]'', the Sentinels fire at your Warthog and seem to push the Warthog whilst in the air, showing that not only is the beam destructive, but it also has suppressive force though it will over heat if you fire it too long.
===Changes from ''Halo 2'' to ''Halo 3''===
* There is now only one variant of Sentinel: the standard grayish-silver type.
* The Sentinel now sports a blue "eye" and teal lights.

Despite it being integrated into the Sentinel, when destroyed the player can use the [[Sentinel Beam]] in campaign, and the weapon is available in [[multiplayer]], in both ''Halo 2'' and ''Halo 3''. [[Needler Sentinel|A needler-wielding sentinel]] also appears in [[Halo 2]], which was left in the game by Bungie from early on in the making of Halo 2.
===Changes from ''Halo 3'' to ''Halo 4''===
* Sentinels have undergone a moderate visual redesign, now sporting a more rounded carapace.
* Sentinels now make a much less shrill whirring sound while flying.
* Sentinels now fire a bluish-colored beam, similar to the beam of the golden Sentinel of ''Halo 2'', instead of an orange beam.
* Sentinels will no longer explode when destroyed; instead they teleport away after sustaining severe damage. Because of this behavior, combined with the lack of the weapon's appearance in the game, the Sentinel beam cannot be obtained in ''Halo 4''.

==Weaknesses==
===Changes from ''Halo 4'' to ''Halo Infinite''===
Sentinels fare poorly against [[Covenant]] [[Plasma]] weapons, specifically the [[Plasma Pistol]]. The Plasma Pistol's semi-homing ability is fatal against Sentinels, as one such overcharged shot will destroy it. The Sentinel is also weak against its own [[Sentinel Beam]]. Besides these, a few shots from the [[Plasma Rifle]] and [[Covenant Carbine]] can eliminate a Sentinel, as do rapid-firing weapons such as the [[SMG]], [[Assault Rifle]] and [[Needler]].
* Sentinels are more expressive in their muteness and will tilt and move their arms in various situations.
* The [[Aggressor Sentinel Eliminator]] from ''Halo 2'' returns, this time equipped with a Heatwave instead of the Gold Sentinel Beam.
* Sentinels will now melee with their arms if an enemy gets too close.
* The last sentinel in a group will often overload with a loud sound and then charge the enemy, exploding.
* Sentinels are weak to shock weapons and take more damage when shot in their eye.
* Sentinels are not hostile to [[Banished]] forces and can be seen collaborating with them.

In [[Halo: CE]], Sentinels can't be killed by a melee attack. In [[Halo 2]], they are vulnerable to melee attacks, but it will not fly and will release an EMP blast when it does so, draining your shields. In [[Halo 3]], they are very vulnerable to a melee attack and will sent flying in the direction meeled and explode in 3 seconds, damaging those caught in the blast. It is possible to use the Sentinel as a projectile by doing that.
===''Halo Wars''===
*'''Info''': A flying Forerunner unit, the Sentinel will inflict corrosive damage with a dangerous beam weapon.
**'''Cost:''' Population 1, Tech level 1, Supplies 100
Aggressors appear in both campaign and Skirmish mode of ''Halo Wars'', serving as an air unit. In campaign, Aggressors are the primary Forerunner unit, appearing on levels set within [[Trove]]. Like all Forerunner units, they are hostile towards all three other factions, including UNSC, Covenant, and the Flood. They are produced from invisible spawn points that could not be targetted or destroyed.

In Skirmish mode, neutral Aggressors are seen defending [[Forerunner fort]]s, which occupied base build sites, and bonus buildings such as the [[Forerunner supply elevator]] or [[Forerunner secondary reactor]]. Player-aligned Aggressors are only found on Skirmish maps [[Repository]] and [[Glacial Ravine]]. These two maps feature [[Sentinel factory|Sentinel factories]], where players can purchase Aggressors which can then be added to their forces.

===''Halo Wars 2'' Open Beta===
These units will defend the [[Domination Point]] in [[Domination]].

===''Halo Wars 2''===
Aggressors Sentinel are normally a hostile unit, but [[Professor Anders]]' upgrade for the Protector Sentinel allows Aggressor Sentinels to be its escort. Aggressors have a smaller version known as the Sentinel Swarm, which  is impervious to most attacks, except when struck by an EMP MAC or the Aggressor Sentinel coordinating it is destroyed.<ref>'''Halo Wars 2''', Campaign level ''[[The Cartographer]]''</ref><ref>'''Halo Wars 2''', Campaign level ''[[Gatecrashers]]''</ref> On the skirmish map, a group of three Aggressors can be seen guarding a Power Node and it has the ability to de-capture the Power Node should anyone takes control of it while the Aggressors is around. In Skirmish, Professor Anders can utilize her leader power '''Ark Defense''' and '''Sentinel Beacon''' to spawn the Aggressors Sentinel to draw the anti-air's attention.

[[Image:POAEngineRoom.jpg|thumb|right|Sentinels fighting the [[Flood]].]]
{{Linkbox|gallery=yes}}
*'''Sentinels''' have the same name as the machines in the Matrix trilogy, but they differ greatly in appearance.
*Chris Hughes created the original concept art of the Aggressor Sentinel.<ref>'''[[The Art of Halo]]''', ''page 44''</ref>
*In ''[[Halo: Ghosts of Onyx|Ghosts of Onyx]]'', an [[Onyx Sentinel]] approaches [[Ash-G099|Ash]], one of Kurt's [[Spartan-IIIs]], and attempts to communicate with him, first in Latin, then in English. Later in the book, Dr. Halsey confirms that this drone was a Sentinel, therefore proving that the Sentinels of [[Onyx]] have a slightly more advanced [[AI]] than those of other Installations. Although Master Chief has [[343 Guilty Spark (Monitor)|343 Guilty Spark]] to communuicate with.
*Aggressor Sentinels share both similar design and functions to that of the P'fhor Defense Drones from the [[Marathon|''Marathon'' series]]. In addition, they share the same weaknesses against shotgun and plasma/fusion pistol fire.
*Using the Bump-Possession cheat, Sentinels can fire any weapon they pick up.
*A [[Needler Sentinel|lone Aggressor Sentinel]] that fires sporadic [[Type-33 Guided Munitions Launcher|Needler]] rounds can be found on the ''Halo 2'' campaign level, ''[[Quarantine Zone]]''. The Aggressor will drop a Needler when destroyed. This is the result of developer experimentation with giving Sentinels different weapons.
*Interesting to note, the [[Bestiarum]], which is taken from a Forerunner perspective, gives species Latin names as well. So a Sentinel speaking Latin could show some sort of link between the [[Forerunner]]s, and the Latin language.
*On certain levels in ''Halo 3'', it is possible to 'surf' on Aggressor Sentinels, by standing on the furthest possible point from the front of the Aggressor. This is easiest on ''[[The Ark (level)|The Ark]]'', at the point where the light bridge must be opened for the Scorpions and Warthogs. The Aggressor will, eventually, hover over the edge, holding the player up about half of the time. Remaining on top of the Aggressor allows the player to reach inaccessible locations.
*The Sentinel Beam, along with the [[Fuel Rod Gun]], is one of the few weapons that does not appear on any Halo 3 maps by default. These weapons, however, can be added on in Forge.
*In ''[[Halo: Combat Evolved]]'' and ''[[Halo 2]]'', you can destroy any unshielded Sentinel in one shot with an overcharged [[Plasma Pistol]].
*There is a lone [[Needler Sentinel]] found on the level ''[[Quarantine_Zone (Level)|Quarantine Zone]]''. It fires sporadic [[Needler]] rounds and drops a [[Needler]] when destroyed. This is an oversight made by [[Bungie]], and should ''not'' be considered part of the [[Halo Universe]].
*In ''[[Halo: CE]]'', the [[MA5B|Assault Rifle]] has the same animation label as the [[Sentinel Beam]], making it possible to have a Sentinel with an [[Assault Rifle]]. However, there are no actual Sentinels that have [[Assault Rifles]] in the final product of the game.
*In ''Halo: Combat Evolved'', Sentinels can be "assassinated". An easy time to do this is at the beginning of [[The Maw]], when you hide behind a protruding wall and wait for 4 Sentinels to float into the lifeboat airlocks. Sentinels can also be "headshot" by [[Sniper Rifle System 99C-S2 AM|Sniper Rifles]]. This can be done on the level [[Two Betrayals]].
*In ''[[Halo Custom Edition]]'', using bump possession or a custom map to control a Sentinel, crouching activates "idle" mode.
*[[Chris Hughes]] created a crablike machine with many animating parts that gave the Sentinel life and character.
*It is possible to 'stick' a Sentinel with a [[Fragmentation Grenade]]. The Sentinels' in game model is essentially hollow, so a well thrown Frag can get stuck inside. This is easiest from in front and just above the target.
*In ''Halo: Combat Evolved'', Sentinels would fold into a compact "idle" form while not in combat. In ''Halo 3'', they will fold into this form and clatter to the floor when hit with small impacts, such as brushing against a passing vehicle.
*Like other allies, Sentinels will turn on you if you destroy three or more of them. [[343 Guilty Spark (Monitor)|343 Guilty Spark]] will also say some of the lines usually reserved for when you're dead. <ref>''[[Halo: Combat Evolved]]'', ''[[The Library]]'' </ref>
*You can see Sentinels on the ''[[Halo 3]]'' maps ''[[Construct]]'' and ''[[Isolation]]''. Similar to the fish and birds seen in other multiplayer maps, you can shoot down Sentinels using long range weapons. These sentinels change your cross-hair red.
*On the ''[[Halo 2]]'' level [[The Arbiter (Level)|The Arbiter]], the [[Elites]] joining the [[Arbiter (Character)|Arbiter]] referred to the Sentinels as 'Guardians' or 'Warriors' of the Halo Rings.
*Normal shielded Sentinels (like the ones in the Ark at the bridge you must activate) have relatively weak shields as it only takes 3-5 shots with the [[Carbine]] to penetrate their shield and destroy them.
*It is possible to "surf" Sentinels (this is easiest on the ''[[The Ark (level)|The Ark]]'' where you must activate the bridge for the [[Scorpion|Scorpions]] and [[Warthog]]s) by jumping on top of it. If you land on it successfully you can stay and hover on it. When you land on it one of two things will happen: it will move as normal at its normal height, or it will sink and float/move along touching the ground. Sometimes, Sentinels will float along the ground, making it easier to "surf". Another method is to stand on top of the Sentinel Launcher and jump on one as it comes out.
*In ''Halo 3'', the Shielding technology may be similar to that of the Bubble Shield, created by the ONI.
*Sentinels can be seen combating [[Covenant]] troops on the Ark, prior to clearing the LZ for ''[[Forward Unto Dawn]]''.  The fight can be seen at the entrance where you flip the switch to let the Scorpions and Warthogs cross the light bridge.
*Sentinels seem to exhibit similar combat behavior as Brute and Marines, seeking cover in [[Bubble Shield]]s if one is activated.
*The [[Forerunners]] referred to the Sentinels and their beams as "''our very basic countermeasures.''"
*It has been confirmed that they will appear in ''[[Halo Wars]]'' only in [[multiplayer]], as a neutral faction, fighting for the faction that controls the [[Sentinel Shop]]s.
*For a short period in ''[[Halo 3]]'', Sentinels are the player's allies again (a result of the [[Master Chief]] being reunited with 343 Guilty Spark). However, Guilty Spark only had command of the Sentinels on [[Installation 04]], it is hinted that the Sentinels on the [[Ark]] are either controlled or influenced by [[Mendicant Bias]], via several implicating messages on the terminals found on the Ark. The Sentinels on the replacement Installation 04 are most likely controlled by Guilty Spark. Since Guilty Spark was destroyed, all Sentinels on the replacement [[Installation 04 (II)|Installation 04]] became hostile to anything on it. Another possibility is that Guilty Spark added the [[Master Chief]] and the [[Arbiter (Character)|Arbiter]] to the Sentinels targeting ledger.
*In ''[[Halo 2]]'', on the level "[[The Arbiter (Level)|The Arbiter]]", if you are spotted by a Sentinel, it will make a beeping noise to alert the others.
*In the ''Halo 2'' level, "The Arbiter", a Sentinel can be seen using the [[Construction Beam]] on the Seraph fighter in the hangar.
*The Sentinels in Halo 2 are only met by the Arbiter, the [[Master Chief]] does not encounter them.
*In ''Halo 2'', if you throw a [[Frag grenade]] below a Sentinel, it will activate idle mode to protect itself from the blast. This may also work with the [[Plasma Grenade]].
*The Sentinels were also used by the Forerunners in order to combat the flood, so that the Forerunners could remain outside of direct battle and remaining uninfected.
*Unlike the Sentinels in [[Halo:Combat Evolved]] and [[Halo 2]], the Sentinels in [[Halo 3]] don't fall to the ground prior to exploding when destroyed.

Aggressor Sentinels[5] (UNSC Z-classification: Z-1500 Automated Systems Drones, Z-1500 ASD)[2] are Forerunner automatons programmed to act as security and maintenance drones, suppress small-scale Flood outbreaks, and protect Forerunner installations. As the basic type of the fairly inclusive Sentinel class, Aggressors are generally referred to simply as Sentinels.[5]

Overview[edit]

John-117 has a face-to-face encounter with an Aggressor Sentinel on Installation 00.

Design details[edit]

Aggressor Sentinels have two arm-like appendages, with two fine manipulators at the end of each arm. Their central head rests above a curved undercarriage generally housing an offensive sterilization beam. Their powerful beam weapons and defensive energy shields make them very effective in combat against intruders or foreign objects that present themselves as threats. Aggressor Sentinels are also equipped with a small reconstitution emitter, which uses lasers to repair damaged Forerunner constructs in conjunction with Constructors and for self-repair should the Aggressors be damaged in combat.[6] Aggressors are propelled by both an anti-gravity unit located on the undercarriage and small, exotic form of impulse drive which enables them to travel at high speeds.[2] They are also capable of tapping into their installation's teleportation grid.[2]

There are at least two major variants of the Aggressor Sentinel. The standard model is gray or silver in color while the specialized Aggressor Sentinel Eliminator is golden. The differences between the two variants lie solely on their offensive and defensive systems, with the Eliminator sporting superior weaponry and shielding systems.[7][8][3]

Aggressors are created at specialized manufacturing facilities located on every Halo installation and on other key Forerunner installations.[6] These facilities can consist of large airborne platforms or subterranean factories where Aggressors are birthed in nanomachine vats and programmed to serve.[8][9][10] Each Forerunner installation has its own design of the Aggressor Sentinel, but they all share the same basic structure and purpose.[1]

Operation[edit]

An Aggressor Sentinel's energy shield.

Aggressor Sentinels were deployed in massive numbers during the Forerunner-Flood war.[1] Unlike their own biological soldiers that could be converted into biomass, the mechanical nature of the Aggressor Sentinels allowed the Forerunners to battle the Flood without contributing to its numbers.[6] Billions are estimated to be active across the myriad of Forerunner installations where they are utilized as all-purpose workers and guards.[1] Following the construction of the Halo Array, they were installed on the ringworlds as their first line of defense against Flood outbreaks and other external threats. Controlled by their own basic ancilla functions, as well as their installation's monitor, Aggressors patrol the installation's vast terrain and network tunnels tirelessly and attack as their protocol demands.[6]

When not in combat, Aggressors serve as basic repair, maintenance, and security drones for Forerunner installations and facilities where Flood samples are kept, working in conjunction with Constructors and Enforcers to ensure that the facility remains in working order.[7]

The keyship Anodyne Spirit was equipped with its own contingent of Aggressor Sentinels. The San'Shyuum managed to adapt these machines to serve them in a combat support role, using them in battles during the War of Beginnings before the Covenant's formation.[11] The war depleted the keyship's Sentinel contingent almost completely, and the few that remained in High Charity were regarded as relics to be preserved and were no longer used in combat.[12]

Combat behavior[edit]

Aggressor Sentinels are the first automated defense systems to assist a in a given situation and generate a proper response protocol, deploying to an area of interest via wall-mounted launchers.[7][3] While Aggressors are strong enough to handle small-scale battles, they are more of a supplement rather than a reliable combat system. The Aggressors' weapons systems are limited and not as powerful as some of the other Forerunner weapons employed against the Flood.[7][8] Because of their limited ancilla, they are only individually able to handle situations on a basic scale, which makes them vulnerable to strategic Flood attacks.[10] Their limited intelligence means they are often unable to perform evasive maneuvers when facing imminent attack and are usually destroyed.[7][8][3] In overwhelming numbers, Aggressors are capable of impressive coordination and are more than capable of handling a situation for a certain time until more permanent measures can be applied.[10]

The Aggressor's energy shield is their primary defense mechanism. Once taken down, it is susceptible to small-arms fire. When an Aggressor has been damaged beyond repair, it explodes violently and releases a powerful electromagnetic pulse, a tactical last resort that disables all nearby electronics.[7][8] If all other members of a swarm of Aggressors have been destroyed, the last remaining Aggressors have, on occasion, been observed to overload their core while attempting to ram nearby belligerents.[3]

Thousands of Aggressors swarming the Enduring Conviction.

When faced with a single threat of sufficient physical size, such as a capital ship, Aggressors have been known to deploy en masse and create a swarm. Instead of using their individual weapons, they fly in formation and use their bodies as projectiles, causing enough damage to end the threat. This was seen during the conflict on Installation 00 in 2559, when Enduring Conviction's energy projector was fired upon the surface of the Ark, breaking the installation's outer crust. Thousands of Aggressors on the installation were quick to respond, using their combined mass to tear the ship's hull apart and cut it into two pieces.[13]

Variants[edit]

  • Standard Aggressor Sentinel: Each Forerunner facility has its own unique variation of the standard Aggressor Sentinel, but they all share the same basic structural design and methods of operation.[1]
  • Aggressor Sentinel Eliminator: The Aggressor Sentinel Eliminator functions very similarly to the standard Aggressor Sentinel. However, they are fitted with gold-colored armor and a stronger energy shield. Eliminators are equipped with alternate weapons that can include a more powerful Sentinel Beam that fires blue energy or a Heatwave.[7][8][3]

Gameplay[edit]

Evolution of the Aggressor Sentinel's design from Halo: Combat Evolved to Halo 4.

Changes from Halo: Combat Evolved to Halo 2[edit]

  • The Aggressor Sentinel received a graphical update.
  • There are now unshielded Aggressor Sentinels
  • There are now two variants of Aggressor Sentinel: The standard grayish-silver and gold variants.
  • The Aggressor Sentinel's beam weapon can now be used when the Sentinel is destroyed.

Changes from Halo 2 to Halo 3[edit]

  • There is now only one variant of Sentinel: the standard grayish-silver type.
  • The Sentinel now sports a blue "eye" and teal lights.

Changes from Halo 3 to Halo 4[edit]

  • Sentinels have undergone a moderate visual redesign, now sporting a more rounded carapace.
  • Sentinels now make a much less shrill whirring sound while flying.
  • Sentinels now fire a bluish-colored beam, similar to the beam of the golden Sentinel of Halo 2, instead of an orange beam.
  • Sentinels will no longer explode when destroyed; instead they teleport away after sustaining severe damage. Because of this behavior, combined with the lack of the weapon's appearance in the game, the Sentinel beam cannot be obtained in Halo 4.

Changes from Halo 4 to Halo Infinite[edit]

  • Sentinels are more expressive in their muteness and will tilt and move their arms in various situations.
  • The Aggressor Sentinel Eliminator from Halo 2 returns, this time equipped with a Heatwave instead of the Gold Sentinel Beam.
  • Sentinels will now melee with their arms if an enemy gets too close.
  • The last sentinel in a group will often overload with a loud sound and then charge the enemy, exploding.
  • Sentinels are weak to shock weapons and take more damage when shot in their eye.
  • Sentinels are not hostile to Banished forces and can be seen collaborating with them.

Halo Wars[edit]

  • Info: A flying Forerunner unit, the Sentinel will inflict corrosive damage with a dangerous beam weapon.
    • Cost: Population 1, Tech level 1, Supplies 100

Aggressors appear in both campaign and Skirmish mode of Halo Wars, serving as an air unit. In campaign, Aggressors are the primary Forerunner unit, appearing on levels set within Trove. Like all Forerunner units, they are hostile towards all three other factions, including UNSC, Covenant, and the Flood. They are produced from invisible spawn points that could not be targetted or destroyed.

In Skirmish mode, neutral Aggressors are seen defending Forerunner forts, which occupied base build sites, and bonus buildings such as the Forerunner supply elevator or Forerunner secondary reactor. Player-aligned Aggressors are only found on Skirmish maps Repository and Glacial Ravine. These two maps feature Sentinel factories, where players can purchase Aggressors which can then be added to their forces.

Halo Wars 2 Open Beta[edit]

These units will defend the Domination Point in Domination.

Halo Wars 2[edit]

Aggressors Sentinel are normally a hostile unit, but Professor Anders' upgrade for the Protector Sentinel allows Aggressor Sentinels to be its escort. Aggressors have a smaller version known as the Sentinel Swarm, which is impervious to most attacks, except when struck by an EMP MAC or the Aggressor Sentinel coordinating it is destroyed.[14][15] On the skirmish map, a group of three Aggressors can be seen guarding a Power Node and it has the ability to de-capture the Power Node should anyone takes control of it while the Aggressors is around. In Skirmish, Professor Anders can utilize her leader power Ark Defense and Sentinel Beacon to spawn the Aggressors Sentinel to draw the anti-air's attention.

Trivia[edit]

  • Chris Hughes created the original concept art of the Aggressor Sentinel.[16]
  • Aggressor Sentinels share both similar design and functions to that of the P'fhor Defense Drones from the Marathon series. In addition, they share the same weaknesses against shotgun and plasma/fusion pistol fire.
  • A lone Aggressor Sentinel that fires sporadic Needler rounds can be found on the Halo 2 campaign level, Quarantine Zone. The Aggressor will drop a Needler when destroyed. This is the result of developer experimentation with giving Sentinels different weapons.
  • On certain levels in Halo 3, it is possible to 'surf' on Aggressor Sentinels, by standing on the furthest possible point from the front of the Aggressor. This is easiest on The Ark, at the point where the light bridge must be opened for the Scorpions and Warthogs. The Aggressor will, eventually, hover over the edge, holding the player up about half of the time. Remaining on top of the Aggressor allows the player to reach inaccessible locations.
