===Beginnings: 2004===

Halopedia, originally known simply as "Halo Wiki," began in late 2004 as a project to document the [[Halo Universe|Halo fictional universe]]. It quickly attracted a small following of users. After the creation of Halowiki.net, the wiki's name was changed to "Halopedia," and moved to www.halopedia.org. While Halo Wiki and Halopedia appear to be in direct competition against each other, they are actually sister projects that have very different goals. ''Halopedia is a wiki about the story of Halo, while halowiki.net is a "Halo 2 multiplayer repository."''<ref>[http://wikiriot.net/2006/07/31/halopedia/ Wikiriot News - Halopedia - 07/31/06]</ref>
Following a mandatory skin change and stricter Terms of Use in mid-2010 by Wikia, Halopedia moved back to an independent domain, hosted by the previous host.<ref>[http://halopedia.org/Forum:Domain_overhaul_-_And_what_do_you_think?/Outcome '''Halopedia''': ''Domain overhaul - And what do you think?/Outcome'']</ref><ref name="movingin">[http://www.halopedia.org/Forum:Moving_in '''Halopedia''': ''Moving In'']</ref>

Halopedia started to be recognized in early 2006, even getting mentions from [[Bungie Studios]]<ref>[http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=news&cid=7690 Bungie.net - Halopedia Knows - 2/14/06]</ref>, the company which created the Halo games. ===Rocky upbringing===
Wikia's Halo Nation left Fandom, and merged with Halopedia in 2019.

Halopedia soon became a victim of its own success as its growing community began to present a major problem for its creators; the site's growing size was producing a bill in excess of 150USD a month for every server usage and average ping. Throughout May, June and July of 2006, the site would be sporadically down, until it finally went offline for several weeks. Eventually, Halopedia was merged with halo.wikia.com, a formerly rival wiki that did not have the same issues. Despite the painstaking process of having to copy every article from the original Halopedia, the site ultimately benefited with several new active users and a severe drop in vandalization, going from at least 2 or three vandalisms a day to almost none.

Dragonclaws's description of the wiki. (2006)[1]

Halopedia is a wiki about the Halo fictional universe. It covers the Halo video games, from Halo: Combat Evolved to Halo Infinite; tie-in media and merchandise including published literature, films and action figures; as well as notable people associated with the franchise. Much like Wookieepedia, Halopedia is a fan-driven encyclopedia and is not an official party of the Halo franchise; thus, it is not itself a primary source of Halo information but rather an aggregate of content based on official media.

Halopedia runs on MediaWiki and is privately hosted. The site is also available in several other languages, including French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Spanish, Korean and Russian. However, the English one is the most up-to-date version, with the others having very little content.

History and description[edit]

Main article: History of Halopedia

Halo Wiki, as it was known back then, was founded by AgentSeethroo, with the help of Steve who hosted the site, and launched on November 4, 2004. Initially created to supplement his clan, the site shifted its focus to cover the Halo universe in later periods. After the creation of halowiki.net, the site was renamed to "Halopedia" and moved its domain to www.halopedia.org. Halopedia and halowiki.net remained sister projects with very different goals; Halopedia concerned itself with the canon of the Halo universe, while halowiki.net was essentially a "multiplayer repository"; halowiki.net has since gone inactive. Since the renaming, Halopedia has actively documented the developments of the Halo franchise and the fictional universe, along with gameplay information and help.[1]

In 2006, the original host was unable to financially support the wiki, prompting Halopedia to merge with Wikia's Halo Wiki site.[2] From 2007 to 2010, Halopedia was one of Wikia's most active and popular wikis following the release of Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. In 2009, the wiki was awarded as the "Best Resource Website of 2009" by Hawty McBloggy, later a member of 343 Industries.[3]

Following a mandatory skin change and stricter Terms of Use in mid-2010 by Wikia, Halopedia moved back to an independent domain, hosted by the previous host.[4][5]

Halopedia has come to be regarded as accurate and reliable among the Halo fanbase and media alike,[6] and has been used as a source for several works of published literature.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

Wikia's Halo Nation left Fandom, and merged with Halopedia in 2019.
