The Gespu is one of the weapons featured in Halo: Official Spartan Field Manual (OSFM). However, it is given size and weight statistics inconsistent with those provided on Halo Waypoint and in the Halo Encyclopedia (2022 edition). In the OSFM, the weapon is given a length and weight stat of 55.4 in and 45.9 lb, respectively - something consistent with neither other published material on the Gespu nor any other fuel rod gun model. The page also lists the weapon as manufactured in the High Charity Assembly Forges; a statement which would apply to the other fuel rod weapons in Covenant service, but not the Gespu; this is something in keeping with the page text's more general description of fuel rod guns rather than the Gespu specifically. | |||

The Gespu-pattern Flak Launcher[3] (UNSC Type classification: Type-58 Light Anti-Armor Weapon, T-58 LAAW)[5] is a model of Fuel Rod Gun utilised by the warlord remnants of the Covenant empire. It is the post-war successor to the Korva, Pez'tk, and Zasqi-patterns utilised by the Covenant before and during its war with humanity. Unlike prior models, the Gespu was engineered by various multi-species workshops on the colony world of Venezia, leading to multiple eccentricities in its design.[3]
Overview[edit]
Design details[edit]
Unlike prior fuel rod weapons used by the Covenant, the Gespu was engineered by multi-species workshops on Venezia.[3][2] As such, it is more ergonomic for use by multiple species, considered smaller,[3] lighter, safer, and cheaper.[5] These advantages are also aided by the weapon being generally more accurate than its forebears.[2] These advances, in part fuelled by the civil war on Sanghelios, have resulted in the weapon becoming the dominant design fielded by the various ex-Covenant remnants including Jul 'Mdama's Covenant and the Swords of Sanghelios.[3]
The Gespu's main notable design difference from prior models is in its reloading; rather than reloading via a top-loaded magazine, the weapon instead reloads by manually inserting a revolving magazine similar to a revolver's speedloader, consisting of five 38 millimeters (1.5 in) Class-2 fuel rods into the back of the weapon.[4] The fuel rods used by the Gespu are considered safer to manufacture, store, and field, when compared to the ammunition of earlier weapons.[5]
The Gespu is not fitted with a smart-link optical scope, in stark contrast to its forebears. It is instead fitted with a holographic projector that can display a heads-up display for the operator,[4] but does not provide any magnification.[3]
Variants[edit]
- Light of Urs: An advanced model of Gespu, created thanks to the technological advances necessiatated by the Blooding Years. Light of Urs has a higher muzzle velocity for its projectiles, and can lock onto ground and air vehicles.[6]
- Pool of Radiance: A once-forbidden, unstable model of fuel rod gun that leaves incendiary gel residue in the area of impact.[7]
In-game information[edit]
Halo 5: Guardians[edit]
- Main article: Fuel Rod Gun (gameplay) § Halo 5: Guardians
The Gespu-pattern fuel rod cannon was first introduced in Halo 5: Guardians. In the Warzone gamemode in multiplayer, it is an Uncommon REQ that can be called in for energy, and sold for 75.
Production notes[edit]
The Gespu is one of the weapons featured in Halo: Official Spartan Field Manual (OSFM). However, it is given size and weight statistics inconsistent with those provided on Halo Waypoint and in the Halo Encyclopedia (2022 edition). In the OSFM, the weapon is given a length and weight stat of 141 centimeters (55.4 in) and 20.8 kilograms (45.9 lb), respectively - something consistent with neither other published material on the Gespu nor any other fuel rod gun model. The page also lists the weapon as manufactured in the High Charity Assembly Forges; a statement which would apply to the other fuel rod weapons in Covenant service, but not the Gespu; this is something in keeping with the page text's more general description of fuel rod guns rather than the Gespu specifically.[8]
