The Shearwater is a stealth aircraft in the service of the UNSC Office of Naval Intelligence.[1]
Overview[edit]
Design details[edit]
Considered one of the most versatile craft in ONI service, the Shearwater is a single-operator craft capable of being used for reconnaissance and stealth missions. They are jet-black in colouration and boast an airframe with forward-swept wings and an engine configuration that makes them remarkably swift and agile. They are capable of hosting an onboard dumb AI, which can be used to pilot the ship in lieu of a human operator. They can additionally be landed by clutching the underside of a given surface (such as a hangar or cave), if required for observation missions.[1]
Armaments[edit]
Shearwaters are armed with two 7.62mm heavy machine guns and a single Anvil-III missile pod.[1]
Operational history[edit]
A Shearwater was used by the ex-SPARTAN-II-turned-ONI-contractor James Solomon, preferred by James for its versatility.[1] He stored it aboard his personal Winter-class prowler Cataphract.[2]
His craft was battle-scarred from long service and hosted an onboard dumb AI, Lola. On November 5, 2559, James used his Shearwater to conduct covert reconnaissance of a group of six corporate-controlled Paris-class heavy frigates operating on Terceira. The frigates were involved in human trafficking and slaving operations, something which he had been tasked with stopping. The Spartan used his Shearwater to counter the frigates' sensors and land on the deck of the trailing frigate, allowing him to plant charges on the various ships of the flotilla and ultimately destroy them. During the mission, after he was engaged by corporate mercenaries and Janissaries, Lola remote-piloted the Shearwater to provide air support for James.[1]
Trivia[edit]
A shearwater is a species of seabird, following the convention set with the Pelican, Condor, Darter, Albatross, and Heron.
