Eudemon, officially known to the UNSC as "X49-05", is a satellite orbiting an unknown planet and a Unified Earth Government colony[3] in the Farfield system.[1]

Overview[edit]

Eudemon's bioluminescent ecology.
The bioluminescent life of Eudemon's caverns.

Environmental features[edit]

The moon is oxygen rich, has plentiful water, and is filled with life, making it comparable to Earth's makeup. However, the moon's tectonic activity is irregular and problematic.[2]

Ecology[edit]

Some cavern-dwelling species on Eudemon exhibit bioluminescence; large mats of glowing microorganisms grow in shallow waters and near-water surfaces within Eudemon's caverns. They are complemented by a species of massive fungi that grow at least 17 meters high with a cap at least 13 meters across.[4] They grow alongside 2 meter shelf lichens, and 2 meter ball fungi, which exhibit the same bioluminescence, possibly indicating a symbiotic relationship with the microorganisms. Eudemon also hosts multiple species of grass, moss, ivy, and trees. Buildings on Eudemon exhibit cryptogam growth.[5]

Eudemon is home to a species of bird found across many human planets.[5]

History[edit]

Postwar[edit]

It was discovered by a pioneer group after the Human-Covenant War, and considered a lucky find; however, concerns remained about the moon's structural integrity.[3] Research teams were deployed into the moons cavernous interiors.[2] The moon was nevertheless colonized in 2554.[1]

A simulation of a cave found on the moon was later used by the UNSC Infinity's SPARTAN-IV complement for training.[3]

Trivia[edit]

A Eudemon is a kind spirit/demon in Greek mythology.
