Interestingly, the Spartan III program never went public, unlike the Spartan II's. This means there would be no need to have declared the Spartans as MIA to save face since there was no general public morale to boost. It would be sensible to conclude that Team Lima were pronounced MIA simply as another Spartan tradition, rather than protocol.

Team Lima was a group in Spartan-III's Beta Company. The unit had participated in a training exercise on Onyx in 2541 which led to the neutralization of three Drill Instructors. [1]

After Operation: TORPEDO on Pegasi Delta all members of this group, along with most of Beta Company were pronounced MIA; due to the policy of never declaring a Spartan KIA, despite the probability of them being KIA and the fact that no transmission was heard from them ever again. Their true status is still unknown.
