The CPV-class heavy destroyer[1] is one of several destroyer class warships in service with the Covenant Navy.[2]

Background

The Covenant CPV-class heavy destroyer is the more predominant offensiveness ship in the destroyer class warships in the Covenant Navy, CPV-class destroys are primarily used for ship-to-ship warfare and glassing operations, as part of Covenant doctrine.[1] In certain situations when presented CPV-class destroyers can and have served as occupation vessels in lieu of the more occupation role centered CCS-class battlecruiser and CAS-class assault carrier.[1]

CPV-class destroyers follow the typical architecture of a Covenant ship — a sleek amphibious design with sweeping contours and perfect symmetry, a roughly teardrop-shaped fore section that droops downward, forming a bulbous protrusion; the dorsal surface of this section contains a recessed area. Near the aft end, the hull splits into six sleek, winglike structures. The shortest pair face outward at a slightly upward angle, the mid-sized structures curve upward at an inward-facing angle, and the largest structures curve downward, also facing inward.

Operational history

Many CPV-class heavy destroyers were deployed during the glassing of Harvest in 2525[3], after Admiral Cole's victory in March of 2526 the Covenant regrouped to execute those who failed to destroy Cole's fleet and for celebration at the glassing of Harvest.[4] After the planet's liberation in 2531 the Covenant arrived at Arcadia During the attack one destroyer was able to escape and was present during the Battle of the Flood-controlled Shield World, where it engaged the Template:UNSCship after a midair collision between the two ships; the destroyer dispatched several large boarding parties, supported by Banshees, Vampires, and plasma cannon fire in an effort to disable the human vessel, though the attack was repelled. During the Battle of 18 Scorpii UNSC Battle Group Sierra-3 was able to destroy a CPV-class destroyer in 2543.[5] Throughout the war CPV-class destroyers continued to play a major role in the war effort against humanity.[6]

Complement

Armaments

CPV-class heavy destroyers are built for heavy combat, and are well armed with the same weapons as the smaller RPV-class destroyers, however like with all classes of Covenant ships there is a great deal of variance — weaponry, length, estimated tonnage, fighter compliments, speed and so forth within a particular class of warship.[7] CPV-class heavy destroyers are armed with Pulse Laser Turrets which are very powerful speed-of-light weapons, that fire a high intensity laser bolt, radiating energy in the blue wavelength of the spectrum. The turrets themselves are chitinous pods featuring insect-like antennae and are located at various points around the vessel. The CPV-class destroyer is also equipped with Anterior plasma cannons, which are used as artillery in both are used as artillery weapons in both space and ground engagements[8] It is also armed with a single Energy projector or Ventral cleansing beam[1] for use in low altitude bombardment.[6] CPV-class heavy destroyers can also be armed with plasma torpedo launchers, which are plasma turrets that launch long, powerful lances of plasma contained and guided by a shaped magnetic field. It is a devastating weapon that can be used in ship-to-ship combat and planetary bombardment, the torpedo launchers are are located along the lateral edges of the ship.[2]

Aircraft

CPV-class heavy destroyers carry a large number of aircraft including the Seraph fighters and Banshees.[2]
