The CBRN attachment is not the typical tube placed below the jaw and instead has the same CBRN rebreathers that are visible on most verions of the EOD helmet.

This article is about the MJOLNIR armor developed from Project GUNGNIR. For the MJOLNIR Mark IV Grenadier armor, see GRENADIER-class Mjolnir.

Template:Armor Infobox GUNGNIR-class Mjolnir, also designated as the MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor/G variant, is a variant of the MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor manufactured by Hannibal Weapon Systems[1]. It was developed as a part of the GUNGNIR Program. The system was utilized for the Mark V and GEN2 systems.

GEN1 information

All GUNGNIR Armor Permutations in Halo: Reach.

Helmet Characteristics

The GUNGNIR helmet's visor is a "Blast visor",[2] which is boxy and comes with more facial protection than any other helmet as it fully covers the front of the head and it replaces the usage of a visor with a small camera on the left that displays the outside to the user. The plating on the helmet takes the secondary armor color, with visor color only determining the color of the plating's video camera "eye". It bears a white stripe running down the right side with the Norse symbol for Gungnir in the center.[3]

The helmet also has Wyrd III synchronized optimization which seamlessly connects the helmet to an M6 Spartan Laser to allow full access to the weapon.

Two upgrades are available for the helmet, the first adds a Hardened Uplink/Remote Sensor Package on the left side (HU/RS) and the second adds a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Module with a Hardened Uplink/Remote Sensor Package that also has the HU/RS system on the right side of the helmet, though the description fails to mention that it comes included. The CBRN attachment is not the typical tube placed below the jaw and instead has the same CBRN rebreathers that are visible on most verions of the EOD helmet.

Shoulder characteristics

The Supplemental Armor, Pauldron, MJOLNIR Mk. V [G] is curved and covers most of the shoulder and upper arm. It bears something of a resemblance to the shoulder of the Security armor, but doesn't wrap around the shoulder as much. The UNSC Marine and UNSC Army uniforms both make use of a modified version of the GUNGNIR pauldron in their armor, as well.

Knee guard characteristics

The GUNGNIR knee guards primarily protect the knee cap and also cover some parts surrounding it. The kneeguards are primarily used by the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers.

GEN2 information

Overview

The GEN2 GUNGNIR helmet, unlike its Mark V iteration, is round. Like the previous iterations, there is no visor, but the video camera has moved from the left side to the right side of the helmet. The helmet is less angular overall, and the front extends much less than its predecessor.

The helmet continues to have Wyrd III integrated video optics, though the helmet has enhanced cranial plating also now. The chest has a centralized power-distribution capacitor(Servo L-903), and a breach-anchored collar system for in-field modification.[4]

Development history

Continuing from its GEN1 variants, Hannibal created a GEN2 variant and tested it at the WG/Facility 93-00/Kotka.[4]

Usage

Despite being considered an exclusive armor set, many Spartans have adopted GUNGNIR regardless of their weapon loadouts due to its isolated video optics, Wyrd III sensory optimization, and enhanced cranial plating. This was especially useful when operating at or near Covenant manufacturing sites, as it protected against intense flare radiometric conditions.[4]

The GUNGNIR target acquisition and tracking system has been adapted into various UNSC weapon systems.[5]

Trivia

  • The armor designation "GUNGNIR" by itself is a reference to Odin's magical spear of the same name. This is a theme of the Spartan armor systems as MJOLNIR is the name of Thor's hammer.
  • The GUNGNIR helmet has only one video camera "eye" on one side of the face; in Norse mythology, the god Odin also had one eye.
  • The Dvalin skin for the GUNGNIR armor in Halo 5: Guardians is named after Dvalinn, a dwarf who appears in several Old Norse tales and kennings on Norse mythology. Dvalinn is also listed as one of the four stags of Yggdrasill.
