==Trivia==
*It appears to have a [[Wikipedia:Venus|Venusian]] surface.
*How the volcanic activity on the installation is achieved is unknown; volcanic activity on planets such as Earth is caused by moving tectonic plates and the static, but the artificial structure of the Halo rings would not allow such movement.
*It's interesting on how ONI was able to construct a space station around Installation 03 without any intervention by 049 Abject Testament, Installation 03's monitor. It can be assumed that Abject Testament gave a similar warning to either the ship that discovered the location of the ring or the construction crew sent there to build the space station as it approached the ring in the same way 343 Guilty Spark did when the UNSC Pillar of Autumn approached Installation 04. Upon realization that they were human, he probably gave them access to approach the ring.

Installation 03 is one of the seven Halo installations that survived Mendicant Bias' assault on the Forerunner capital. Its monitor is 03-049 Abject Testament.[2] It appears to have a red and cracked surface, indicating the presence of vast deserts, as well as what appears to be volcanic activity,[1] the latter of which exists through clearly artificial means.[note 1]

History

Forerunner-Flood war

As with the other seven Halo rings, Installation 03 was fired at the conclusion of the Forerunners' war with the Flood, killing all sentient life within its effective radius. Afterwards, it entered an inactive state along with the rest of the Array.

Human-Covenant War

On November 3, 2552 during the Battle of Installation 05, a signal was sent to this Halo from Installation 05, putting it on standby mode and preparing it to fire on demand.[3] On December 11, 2552, the installation was still in standby mode and was about to be fired at the behest of the High Prophet of Truth, who had seized Installation 00's control room. However, the Array was deactivated by SPARTAN John-117 and the Hierarch was assassinated by Arbiter Thel 'Vadam before this could occur.[4]

Post-war

The Office of Naval Intelligence discovered the installation's location some time after the Human-Covenant War had ended. Subsequently, the top-secret research station Ivanoff was built in the Halo's orbit, presumably with 049 Abject Testament's permission.[note 2] In March 2553, Catherine Halsey was indefinitely detained here by Admiral Margaret Parangosky, as retribution for lying to her about the creation and deployment of flash clones during the SPARTAN-II program's early phases.[5]

Note

  1. ^ Volcanic activity is caused by the movement of tectonic plates and the friction generated between them. The structure of the installation would presumably not allow such movement. It is probable that the volcanic activity is superficial, as generated by underground mechanisms or, less likely, that the Halo features artificial tectonic dynamics.
  2. ^ As seen in Terminal 1 in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, protocol dictates that a monitor allow humans to approach and make landfall on its respective Halo after verifying the humans' status as reclaimers; therefore, it may be presumed that ONI were granted at least a moderate amount of leeway on and near the installation. Had Abject Testament refused to allow this construction, Sentinels would likely have been dispatched, preventing the construction of the station.
