The Pelosus-pattern fireblade (UNSC Type classification: Type-1 Energy Weapon/Sword, T-1 EW/S),[3] more commonly known as the energy sword, is a Covenant melee weapon manufactured by Assembly Forges.[1]

Overview

Design details

Main article: Energy sword (fiction)

The Pelosus-pattern fireblade is one of the many energy sword variants manufactured by the Covenant. The Pelosus-pattern is characterized by its circular blade contour around the hilt.[1] Some Pelosus-pattern energy swords contain a fail-safe mechanism that can permanently disable the weapon if the Sangheili wielding it drops it.[7] When dropped, the failsafe engages by deactivating the magnetic field before dispersing the plasma. The plasma then consumes the handle and thus destroys the weapon.[5]

Usage

The Pelosus-pattern fireblade is a weapon carried by high-ranking Sangheili; during the Battle of Installation 04 and the Battle of Installation 05, it saw extensive use among Ultras, Zealots, Stealth Sangheili, Sangheili Special Operations Officers, and Honor Guards.[5][6] During the Algolis Invasion, the Sangheili Itho 'Hesiikee was a known wielder of a Pelosus-pattern bloodblade, which he intended to use to execute the Jiralhanae Atriox, but he was killed by his own bloodblade when Atriox retaliated.[8][9]

Variants

  • Bloodblade - As with many other patterns of energy swords, the Pelosus-pattern energy sword can be customized as a bloodblade, with red-colored plasma.[10]

Gameplay

Main article: Energy sword

The Pelosus-pattern energy sword was first introduced Halo: Combat Evolved, albeit unusable by players. It was then made available to players in Halo 2 and the Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer component in Halo: The Master Chief Collection. The energy sword is a powerful melee weapon in close-quarters combat, capable of killing most foes with a single strike. It is a power weapon that appears on some multiplayer maps. In Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer, the bloodblade variant is held by infected players in Infection.

Production notes

In the remastered graphics of the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and the Halo 2: Anniversary campaign, the in-game model of the Pelosus-pattern energy sword was replaced by the energy sword from Halo: Reach. However, the remastered Halo 2: Anniversary cinematics still depicted the Pelosus-pattern energy sword.
