From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

The Day Before is a flash-fiction story included in the Halo Wars: Official Strategy Guide. The story depicts the Prophet of Regret as he watches over a Forerunner shield world that has been dormant for many years, but now, the Covenant has been in need of its treasures inside.[1]

Plot synopsis

Regret stands overlooking the world before him, a place deeply intertwined with his ambitions, secrets, and plans. The world was discovered many years ago, but remained dormant, its treasures locked away and inaccessible with Covenant technology. Now, the urgency of assembling a fleet to battle the humans and unlock the planet's secrets has taken precedence over all other tasks including the ongoing Sacred Rings search.

Regret inquires about the planet's security from the Flood. Arbiter Ripa 'Moramee confirms that the interior is sealed, but the surface remains vulnerable, acknowledging the parasite's relentless persistence. As he speaks, the Arbiter, who is wary and observant of Regret, slightly bows his head. His newly fitted armor feels uncomfortable, a harsh reminder of the prison that weakened his body before he was anointed as Arbiter.

Regret emphasizes the significance of the planet's treasures and the larger plan they are part of, urging the Arbiter not to waver. He nervously manipulates the control panel in front of him, avoiding the Arbiter's scrutiny of his knowledge's limits.

When the Arbiter mentions receiving word about a hidden temple on a human planet set ablaze, Regret criticizes and yells at him for not personally investigating such an important discovery, questioning whether the Arbiter fears the humans and the very thought of battle with them. Challenged by Regret's accusations, the Arbiter clenches his fists and instinctively reaches for his weapon, but restrains himself. He firmly states his intention to leave immediately, determined to fulfill his duty and bring Regret the key he desires.
