Attacks

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

Attacks is a flash-fiction story included in Halo Wars: Official Strategy Guide. The story follows the crew of the UNSC Spirit of Fire as its forces on Harvest are under attack by Jiralhanae.[1]

Plot synopsis[edit]

The Spirit of Fire's bridge is by a second thrown into chaos as overwhelming information floods in from the surface. Crewmembers scramble between stations, and even the usually composed Blake appears flustered. Captain James Cutter rises from his chair and attempts to restore order, directing Serina to report on the situation.

Serina moves to a holopad beside Cutter, her demeanor calm but serious. She informs him that both Alpha and Bravo Teams are under fire from unknown combatants, and satellite scans reveal a large number of ground-based units closing in on their positions. She adds that their remaining forces have been outflanked by the Covenant. Pausing briefly, Serina relays that Sergeant John Forge has identified the attackers as Brutes. Cutter's expression hardens as he orders Serina to establish communication with Forge.

Forge's image appears on the screen, with thick black smoke billowing behind him. He reports that the Brutes are highly organized and formidable, warning that his forces will be overwhelmed unless both teams can reinforce his position. Cutter, maintaining a serious tone, informs Forge that Alpha and Bravo are currently under attack and instructs him to secure his location immediately, with reinforcements on the way. Forge acknowledges the order, stating that they will have to improvise, before ending the transmission.

Serina, now with her arms crossed, considers her earlier assessment of Brute tactics, which characterized them as disorganized and easy to contain. She questions what might have changed to make them a more formidable threat. Cutter speculates that the Brutes may now be under better leadership, making them a stronger force. Serina moves back to a holopad near Blake, sarcastically remarking that it makes sense the Covenant would send their least competent troops during the initial attack on Harvest.

Blake, intrigued, quietly asks Serina how she manages to speak so freely. Serina smiles and playfully responds that Cutter knows she controls the oxygen valves.
