"Spirit of Bloody Fire. Cutter. Bloody hell." is a flash-fiction story included in the Halo Wars: Official Strategy Guide. In the story, Sergeant John Forge awakens in prison and recalls his career. He is approached by Admiral Preston Cole. The two discuss the events that led to Forge being jailed before the Admiral assigns him to the UNSC Spirit of Fire.[1]

Plot synopsis[edit]

Forge wakes up disoriented, initially mistaking a lightbulb on a concrete ceiling for the sun. Realizing he's in a jail cell, he recalls the events of the previous night. An MP bangs on the bars, informing him that he has a visitor. The Marine reluctantly gets to his feet, instinctively responding to the command.

Admiral Cole enters, and Forge snaps to attention feeling vulnerable in his civilian clothes. As Cole assesses him, Forge remembers his military career, which began right after high school following in the family tradition. He'd served in various roles from an MP on Mars to a grunt during the Epsilon Eridani IV insurrections and finally at Fort Marshall.

Cole cuts off Forge's thoughts and informs him that it took three MPs to pull him off a drunk man the previous night. The man, Lieutenant Prosser, wants Forge charged with assault on a superior officer. Forge requests permission to explain, and Cole grants it, unusual as it is. Forge reveals that the incident occurred because Prosser was harassing a woman who had clearly said no, and admits that it escalated to physical violence because Prosser wouldn't listen.

Cole, though unimpressed, reveals that a witness corroborated Forge's story, and DNA evidence supports it. The woman called Forge a hero and credited him with saving her life. Relieved but still facing consequences, Forge asks if the woman is okay. Cole reassures him that she is and then shifts the conversation to a way out by leading a squad into a very dangerous battlefield. Recognizing the opportunity, Forge accepts.

As Cole leaves, he acknowledges Forge's role as a good father. Forge sits back down, contemplating his situation and the mission ahead - on the UNSC Spirit of Fire under Captain James Cutter's command. He mutters to himself: "Spirit of Bloody Fire. Cutter. Bloody hell."
