The Children of Oth Sonin is a Jiralhanae master-pack under the leadership of Chieftain Lydus and in control of the Oth Sonin system in 2558.[1][2] They serve as one of the strongest Jiralhanae governments.[3]

History

Covenant annexation

Lydus was born into a Jiralhanae clan on Doisac that saw its citadel and territory destroyed by the Covenant during their first contact. Lydus was the only survivor of his family and would later come to be known as the "Ghost Father". Disfigured from the attack, the young Jiralhanae reluctantly joined the Covenant along with the rest of his species as they were subjugated. He served the Covenant and formed a small clan with young Jiralhanae warriors, calling them the Children of Oth Sonin.[4]

Governing the Jiralhanae

Following the collapse of the Covenant at the end of 2552, Lydus took his Children of Oth Sonin and expanded to the moon Teash with hopes of solidifying order among the Jiralhanae on Doisac.[4] The Children of Oth Sonin would eventually grow large enough to provide security and limited provisions to the outlying citadels across Doisac's entire star system.[3]

By 2558, the Children of Oth Sonin had emerged as one of the dominant Jiralhanae master-packs in the ongoing conflict with the Sangheili. The conflict was devastating and the Jiralhane were facing a serious shortage of both food and resources. Despite the fact that the San'Shyuum had settled the Jiralhanae on several resource rich worlds as security, the Jiralhanae's technological backwardness meant that they could not mine and process the resources on their worlds once the San'Shyuum disappeared, forcing the Jiralhanae to raid Sangheili worlds to claim their already processed resources. However, even with raiding, the Jiralhanae were unable to sustain themselves in the long run, resulting in an imminent massive species wide famine.[1]

Because of this, Lydus and the Children of Oth Sonin were willing to negotiate a peace with the Sangheili, represented by the Swords of Sanghelios under Arbiter Thel 'Vadam, allowing them access to their resources in exchange for food. Fleet Admiral Terrence Hood of the UNSC Navy agreed to serve as a moderator between Lydus and Thel 'Vadam on Ealen IV. The Children of Oth Sonin brought a fleet with them, to serve as a deterrent to the Sangheili fleet and the UNSC Infinity, Lydus also brought a Captain Major and Bodyguard as his escorts. However, the delegates were attacked by mercenaries under Shipmaster Vata 'Gajat.[1]

In space, communications were cut off between the fleets in orbit and the surface. Lydus' pack-brothers assumed that the UNSC were blocking their communication. Though Commander Bradley tried to convince them otherwise,[5] the Children of Oth Sonin assumed that the UNSC and the Sangheili had betrayed the peace talks, and prepared to attack the Sangheili, only stopping when Captain Thomas Lasky and Spartan Naiya Ray managed to restore communications with the fleets. Lydus, 'Vadam, and Hood were able to escape at the cost of Fireteam Bailey, saving the ambassadors but leaving hope of peace between the Jiralhanae and the Sangheili in doubt.[6]

Following the compromised peace talks on Ealyn IV, rivalry and infighting among the Jiralhanae on Doisac continued. Lydus secretly hired the Banished as a mercenary military to take out his rivals, in exchange for using his shipyards and land.[4]

Razing of Oth Sonin

After the razing of Oth Sonin and the destruction of Doisac by the Created Guardians, Lydus and his clan survived by escaping to an abandoned human colony world. However, some of his forces were rumored to still be lurking in the shadows of their home system.[4]

Military structure

In 2558, the clan maintained the original Jiralhanae ranks of the Covenant military, even five years after the collapse of the Covenant proper.[1]

Military assets

The clan's military assets were very diverse, utilizing both Covenant weaponry, such as the Type-25 plasma pistol and Anskum-pattern plasma grenade, and the Jiralhanae's native weaponry, such as the Paegaas Workshop Spiker. Leaders, such as Captains and Chieftains, used the gravity hammer.[1][6] In terms of vehicles, the clan has been seen making use of the Dextro Xur-pattern Spirit as a dropship. In terms of space vessels, the clan possessed both CAS-class assault carriers, Ket-pattern battlecruisers, and Sinaris-pattern heavy destroyers.[1][6]
