Bertold Vettel was a SPARTAN-IV supersoldier of Fireteam Taurus, of the United Nations Space Command.[1]
Biography
Post-war years
Over the course of the Post-Covenant War conflicts between 2557 and 2559, Fireteam Taurus (and thus, presumably Vettel) worked alongside John-117 and Blue Team several times.[1]
Liberating Reach
Fireteam Taurus were deployed onto Reach in October 2559, during Operation: WOLFE. Alongside Fireteam Intrepid, they were to aid Spartan Commander Sarah Palmer in securing the Viery Militia's nuclear weapons during the Battle of New Mohács - to ensure the weapons could not be used during the fighting and attract unwanted Created attention.[1]
Installation 07
Fireteam Taurus was onboard the UNSC Infinity when it was ambushed by Banished forces in December 2559 over Installation 07. Vettel and the others coordinated the evacuation of the surviving Infinity crew to the Ring's surface. They set up base in the wreckage of the UNSC Mortal Reverie and began fighting back against the Banished, per the Rubicon Protocol. When Spartan Griffin decided to lead a four-man Spartan team to assassinate the Banished War Chief Escharum, he left Vettel in charge. However, Escharum easily defeated the team, killing all but Griffin, who managed to send an encoded distress call to the Reverie. While the transmission was corrupted, enough was heard that the UNSC knew the Banished were about to attack them. Although the UNSC dug in for the battle, the Banished forces were too numerous. On February 2, 2560, Vettel made the difficult choice to abandon their position, knowing that it meant the end of organized UNSC resistance on the Ring (FOB Lima Spartan Audio Log- The Retreat).
Over the next month, the UNSC lost all remaining Forward Operating Bases on the Ring.[2] On March 3, 2560, Vettel regrouped with Spartans Bonita Stone, Makovich, and Theodore Sorel, and a few dozen marines. They decided to stick to following the Rubicon Protocol; stop or slow the Banished by any means necessary and keep Zeta Halo out of their control to buy Earth as much time as they could.
On April 23, 2560, Vettel ambushed a Banished patrol and interrogated them about the whereabouts of other Spartan survivors (Scattered 3, Spartan Audio Log - Inquiries). Six days later on April 29, Vettel tracked down Griffin's last known location before his capture by Escharum. He correctly assumed that Griffin had been taken to Chak Lok's Tower. His plan was to take a transport skiff and slip inside the defenses, but it is unknown if he survived. Considering the fact that his rescue of Griffin was unsuccessful, he either escaped or was killed by Banished forces.[3]
