Minor is the lowest Unggoy rank in the Covenant military. They are the rough equivalent of the UNSC private.[1][2] Unggoy Minors continued to serve in Thel 'Vadam's Swords of Sanghelios and Merg Vol's Covenant following the Covenant's dissolution. Jul 'Mdama's Covenant have also infrequently used the rank.[3]
Description
Minors are the lowest rank in the Covenant military ranking system for the Unggoy, essentially being little more than cannon fodder. Bearing orange methane breathers and light-armored harness, the Sangheili and Jiralhanae often send them into battle with little or no remorse. Minors exhibit various combat behaviors when their commander is killed; the most common combat behavior being to simply retreat and seek cover, or arming themselves with plasma grenades and attempting to perform a suicide attack by charging towards the enemy.
After the Human-Covenant War, the rank of Minor continued to be used in Merg Vol's Covenant and large numbers of these Unggoy fought on behalf of the group during the Battle of Draetheus V in 2554. Jul 'Mdama's Covenant uses the equivalent rank of Unggoy Storm. They are given a different combat harness, although they perform mostly the same tasks. However, during one engagement, Jul 'Mdama's forces have used the rank.
Equipment
Unggoy Minors are sent into combat with very little in the way of equipment. Minors wear a simple combat harness with either a pyramidal or a more smooth, less pointed methane tank. Minors are usually equipped with a plasma pistol, but they sometimes use Needlers and very rarely fuel rod guns. Minors are also sometimes given several plasma grenades.
Gameplay
They are one of the most common enemies, rivaled only by the Flood infection forms. However, on higher difficulties, such as Heroic and Legendary, they became somewhat uncommon, mostly replaced with Unggoy Majors and Ultras. They are much easier to kill than higher ranking enemies and are easily taken down with a headshot. They are also far more likely to flee combat when they are being shot at or when their Sangheili commander has been killed.
Trivia
- Unggoy Minors are the most common unit encountered by the player in every Halo game in any difficulty.
- Minor Grunts usually do not throw plasma grenades, but when they do, they sometimes throw them at point-blank range and accidentally kill themselves instead of the player. This is true and becomes much more dangerous when the Catch skull is activated.
