- "Die? Didn't you know? Spartans never die."
- — Kurt's last words[3]
Lieutenant Commander Kurt Ambrose (UNSCMID: 045888947, civilian identification number: 56522-026-LDR5685), born Kurt M. Trevelyan and formerly known as SPARTAN-051, was a SPARTAN-II supersoldier. Formerly the leader of Green Team, he was close to many of the other Spartans, before he went missing during a mission in 2531. Although the other Spartans were led to believe that Kurt had died, he was actually recruited by Colonel James Ackerson to spearhead the SPARTAN-III program.[4]
The name "Ambrose" was given to him by Colonel Ackerson after his abduction, due to the fact Kurt actually could not remember his full name as a result of extensive mental conditioning involved in the SPARTAN-II program.[5]
Biography
Early childhood
Kurt Trevelyan was born on October 19, 2511 in Mira, eventually growing up in Kuiper on Circumstance.[1] When he was marked as physically and mentally superior by Dr. Catherine Halsey in 2517, she had him abducted and sent to Reach to begin his Spartan training under Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez. As with the other candidates to become Spartans, he was replaced with a flash clone that would appear to die of natural causes, just like all the other future Spartans replacements.
During his training, Kurt quickly proved himself to be considered one of the program's top candidates. Both Dr. Halsey and Chief Mendez identified him as one of four emerging leaders within the Spartan-II group, along with Jerome-092, Frederic-104, and John-117. Chief Mendez expressed his belief the most strongly in Kurt as having the skills to lead the entire Spartan-II group, although Halsey disagreed, instead believing John would fulfill that role.[1] Kurt's leadership skills were correctly observed, as he later became one of the earliest known leaders of the Spartan-IIs' Green Team, which would often beat John's Blue Team in field exercises.[6]
Chi Ceti IV
- Main article: Battle of Chi Ceti
After the Human-Covenant War began with the alien empire's attack on Harvest in 2525, Kurt-051 and the other Spartan-IIs were brought to the Reach FLEETCOM Military Complex, where Rear Admiral Michael Stanforth briefed them on the emerging Covenant threat. In response, the training of the Spartan-IIs was accelerated, and in November 2525 they were sent to Chi Ceti IV to receive their new MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor from the Damascus Materials Testing Facility.[7] While en route to Chi Ceti IV aboard the UNSC Commonwealth, they were attacked by the Unrelenting, a Covenant warship.[8] The Commonwealth was able to ward off the Unrelenting and the Spartans were deployed to Chi Ceti IV with Halsey, where they each received a set of armor.[9] While the Spartans were returning to the Commonwealth, the Unrelenting returned and engaged the frigate. To provide aid to the Commonwealth, John had Kurt and the other Spartan-IIs use thruster packs in an attempt to board the alien vessel, and destroy it with Anvil-II AS missiles. However, only John-117, Kelly-087, and Samuel-034 made it aboard. Kurt and the others missed the Unrelenting and were recovered after the battle.[10]
Radiant Arrow
- Main article: Skirmish over Netherop
By early 2526, Green Team was composed of Kurt, Anton-044, Malcolm-059, and Solomon-069. On March 5 of that year, Kurt, his team, and eight other Spartans were organized into an assault squad led by John-117 with orders to board and capture a Covenant frigate in orbit over the planet Netherop. To accomplish this, they were deployed from the UNSC Starry Night for an EVA boarding action.[11] Using a flight of Banshees for cover, the Spartans stealthily approached the alien vessel.[12] They boarded the frigate via its underslung hangar and eliminated the forces stationed there without the rest of crew realizing they had been boarded. As Green and Blue Teams pushed further into the alien vessel, John instructed Gold Team to collect weapons and corpses to be piled into the Banshees, which would then be pushed out into space for ONI to recover and study. Kurt and his team cleared the side compartments as Blue Team carefully made their way along the main corridor. It was going well, but as the eight Spartans continued on, a sensor operator one of the nearby prowlers "accidentally" broadcast a transmission on the Spartans' SQUADCOM, which revealed their presence to the frigate's crew. Unbeknownst to them, the crewman's apparent mistake was part of an insurrectionist plot designed by Lieutenant Commander Hector Nyeto, intending to get the Spartans killed and remove the threat they posed to insurgents everywhere. With their presence on the vessel now known, the Spartans split up, with John leading his team to the bridge. Kurt led Green Team below in search of the engineering deck, where they would hopefully be able to disable the frigate. While on the way, they were met with resistance by Kig-Yar and Yanme'e warriors. When they reached the engineering deck, only the Yanme'e remained. John had been unable to prevent the frigate's shipmaster from activating a self-destruct sequence, forcing him to order all of his teammates to abandon ship immediately. All of the Spartans—including Kurt and his team —made it to safety before the Radiant Arrow detonated.[13]
SILENT STORM
- Main article: Operation: SILENT STORM
On March 8, 2526, Kurt, Green Team, and the rest of the Spartans that had participated in the pervious mission were given a new assignment. Operation: SILENT STORM would have them and the UNSC Marine Corps' 21st Space Assault Battalion board and destroy Covenant vessels and stations in an attempt to slow their destructive advance through humanity's Outer Colonies. For the duration of this new mission, the Spartans would be assigned to Task Force Yama, a small fleet of prowlers led by the Starry Night that would serve as both transport and support. As a Covenant fleet was currently glassing the colony of Etalan, the nearby world of Biko was chosen as the theater for the task force to launch its first attack. Specifically, an abandoned ice quarry on its third moon of Seoba was selected to house the prowlers until the moment presented itself.[14]
During the voyage through slipspace, Kurt and the others trained with the ODSTs in the UNSC Vanishing Point's mission preparation hold. The Spartans made short work of the veteran marines in each exercise until Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson taught them some unorthodox strategies that proved much more effective against the supersoldiers. After four days of training, Colonel Marmon Crowther had them all gather in the ship's drop hangar to be briefed on the specifics of the operation. Despite their exemplary performance against his ODSTs, Crowther was skeptical about deploying the Spartans to the front lines due to their inexperience on the battlefield, as well as their apparent young age, much to their frustration.[14]
Seoba
- Main article: Battle of Seoba
Upon the task force's arrival at Seoba on March 18, 2526, Colonel Crowther planned to practice the mass deployment of the Spartans and ODSTs into the ice quarry, in an exercise dubbed Operation: ICE DANCE. However, entrenched insurrectionist forces were detected in the very same quarry, preparing to stage a coup against Biko's chancellor. Crowther decided that ICE DANCE would proceed as planned, but now with the objective of taking the quarry from the rebels.[15] An intense battle ensued, with the Spartans leading the way. Blue Team focused on destroying a convoy of Civets moving to repair the rebels' damaged communications relay as the other Spartans—including Kurt's Green Team—were engaged elsewhere.[16] Ultimately, the insurgents were soon defeated and the quarry fell under UNSC control.[17]
The next day, Captain Halima Ascot, commander of Task Force Yama and captain of the Starry Night, held a meeting to discuss the events of the previous day's battle. John was reprimanded for his maverick actions at the start of the battle, and his Spartans' experience was called into question once more. Due to some of Nyeto's sly comments, the truth about their young ages was revealed to the few personnel present at the meeting. Learning this disturbing fact, Colonel Crowther refused to send the Spartans into battle again, instead ordering them to guard the insurrectionists captured during the fighting and prepare them to be sent to Biko to be processed. While this meeting was being held, a Covenant flotilla was detected as it arrived in-system and began heading for Seoba.[18]
As the rest of Task Force Yama mobilized to meet the alien vessels, Kurt and the other Spartans were sent to Subsurface Maintenance Grotto 6M430 where they would direct the captured insurgents onto a transport. While the line of roughly 300 prisoners marched onto the vessel, John noticed that a group of them were hiding the presence of an officer, General Harper Garvin of the United Rebel Front. He ordered the officer to step forward, but another rebel presented herself instead, clearly trying to stall for Garvin. To show that he meant business, John grabbed the woman by her tunic lapels and threatened her with summary execution for interfering with a guard while on the field of combat, as per the UNSC Military Code of Conduct. Seeing this exchange, Kurt asked John if he needed assistance, saying that he did not see a threat. However, John's plan worked and General Garvin presented himself. He began trying to pry information out of John, but this effort was interrupted when a situation with Captain Ascot's flagship was relayed over the task force's command channel. The Starry Night had been shot down on takeoff, crash-landing back into the quarry. Crowther was unable to send a unit of his Black Daggers to search for survivors without putting more prowlers at risk. Since they were the only unit available to assist, John decided that he and his Spartans would go for the Starry Night once the transport was loaded. After sending Garvin back to his people and ordering the transport pilot to launch, John had his Spartans move out, much to the concern of Kurt and Joshua-029. Not only would they be disobeying a direct order from Crowther, operating without the support of the task force in such a situation would be very risky.[19]
Kurt and the others proceeded to the grotto's access vestibule and entered its airlock, sealing the inner hatch. With that, they stepped out into the dense sublimation fog coating the quarry floor. Visibility was so poor that each of the Spartans could barely even see the ends of their rifles, but the flashes of plasma bolts could be seen dancing through the clouds above. John accessed the command channel and requested that he and his teammates receive a waypoint leading to the downed prowler. Crowther quickly responded by asking what he thought he was doing. John stated that they were checking on the status of the Starry Night as they were the only unit that could do so at the moment, carefully choosing his words so that Crowther could deflect blame onto the Spartan if need be. This would make it more likely for Crowther to not stand in the way of their self-assigned mission. While John waited for a response, he signaled Kurt and Joshua to spread out their teams in a hundred-meter-wide search line. Kurt had Green Team space out on the left of the more tightly-gathered Blue Team, as Gold Team spaced out on the right. Doing this, the Spartans would be more likely to find any debris from the Starry Night that might have otherwise been missed in the fog. John also ordered them to advance at a trotting speed, leading them away from the dockyards where Blue Team had engaged insurgents the day before. When Crowther still had not responded, John added over the command channel that they would simply take a look at the crash site and report what they found.[20]
With that reassurance, Crowther finally acknowledged John's plan, but ordered him to not take action unless immediately warranted. He also informed the Spartans of Biko's naval response to the alien bombardment of Seoba and that Nyeto believed that the small Covenant flotilla would either be in full retreat or destroyed within the hour by the approaching overwhelming force. An inexact waypoint was placed on each of the Spartans' HUDs and John had them adjust course to match the new trajectory. With the fog still as dense as ever, John ordered them all to advance at a full run while keeping their eyes on their feet, since that was all they could see anyway. As they ran, the Emmeline departed the grotto and flew over the Spartans, churning up the fog and allowing a brief moment of visibility. Through the haze, they could see five Covenant vessels fire towards the transport as it crested the horizon.[20]
As the twelve Spartans neared the provided waypoint, the fog had lowered to shoulder-height, allowing the Spartans to discover that the Starry Night was indeed seemingly intact, but sat atop a large avalanche about seven hundred meters up the quarry wall. Fred-104 spotted a Covenant intrusion corvette sliding over the rim of the quarry and descending over the prowler. Kelly-087 theorized that they may be trying to recover the Starry Night themselves. Realizing the danger, John declared to his teammates that the mission was no longer a rescue mission. Their primary objective was now to deny the Covenant from recovering the prowler and the data stored within. Opening the command channel again, John relayed this information to Crowther, who echoed his concerns and insisted that they could not let the Covenant take possession of the Starry Night. The vessel's navigation computer and other onboard data devices could reveal the locations of UNSC outposts, entire force deployments, or worse. Crowther asked Nyeto if there was any way to remotely activate the prowler's nuclear self-destruct system, to which the lieutenant commander responded in the affirmative. However, there were only three positions that had access to that ability. The first two were the flight commander and wing commander, both of which were roles held by Captain Ascot, who was either dead or unable to be reached aboard the Starry Night. The final person with the ability to remotely detonate the prowler was the captain of the Vanishing Point, which was holding station two planetary orbits out from Seoba. At that distance, it would take nearly an hour for the request to be sent to the cruiser and for the return signal to arrive. By then, the Covenant might already have retrieved sensitive data from the wrecked prowler. Crowther began to reluctantly order the Spartans to prevent the Starry Night's capture, but John cut him off, assuring him that they would not fail. The Spartan requested that Task Force Yama assist them by keeping the assaulting corvettes off their backs. Nyeto began to say that their prowlers were not designed for ship-to-ship combat when Crowther interrupted him, promising that they would find a way. Crowther started to tell John to standby for instructions on how to manually activate the prowler's self-destruct, but he reassured the colonel that his Spartans already knew how to activate a Fury nuke.[20]
Just then, a Covenant Ghost appeared out of the fog and began firing at John, who managed to kill its Jiralhanae driver with his MA5B's underbarrel grenade launcher. Shortly after that was handled, more Ghosts entered the quarry, so John ordered Green and Gold Teams to deal with them as Blue Team went with him to the prowler. At this point, the looming intrusion corvette had begun deploying EVA-equipped Sangheili, Jiralhanae, and Kig-Yar warriors via gravity lift, with the first already looking for a way inside the ship. Another corvette crested the edge of the quarry, firing its main cannon on the Spartans. With the situation quickly deteriorating and Nyeto's support still setting up, John realized that immediate action was necessary. He ordered Blue Team to simultaneously fire on the avalanche just below the Starry Night with their grenade launchers to cause the vessel to fall to quarry floor and prevent the Covenant from gaining entrance. Despite Fred and Kelly's warnings that such an action could bring the whole slope down on top of them, each member of the team acknowledged and followed his order. As they has feared, the volley of grenades worked a bit too well, bringing the avalanche down on top of all twelve Spartans, but successfully delaying the Covenant in their boarding attempt.[20]
Six of the twelve Spartans were buried under the ice flow, with Kurt's teammate, Solomon-069, becoming completely incapacitated. John-117 was also buried, but not totally immobilized. While he worked on freeing himself, John gave Fred command of the mission to board and destroy the Starry Night. Fred-104, Malcolm-059, and Linda-058 boarded the prowler as members of Green and Gold Teams coordinated attacks on the seemingly endless stream of enemy ground vehicles, supported by at least three Covenant corvettes. John freed himself from the ice flow and began helping repel would-be boarders while Fred's team prepared the vessel's Fury tactical nuclear weapon. Meanwhile, Nyeto's support finally arrived the form of strafing runs that destroyed two of the intrusion corvettes assaulting Green and Gold Teams. Just as the nuke was finished arming, the looming Covenant corvette finally made its move and began slowly levitating the Starry Night up and into its hold using a gravity lift. John ordered Fred's team to activate the nuke and flee from the prowler with the surviving crew, which they did via escape pod. He also warned the others that the nuke would detonate in thirty seconds, urging them to escape the blast radius immediately. Each of the Spartans made it to safety, including Kurt. Colonel Crowther had them extracted after the resulting electromagnetic pulse had dissipated.[21] The blast also destroyed the intrusion corvette, and some of the Spartans assisted in the recovery of a starholo from its wreckage. They and the starholo were transported back to the Vanishing Point.[22]
On March 20, the six Spartans that had not been confined to the infirmary attended a funeral service for the two-hundred-and-three men and women who lost their lives at Seoba. Held in the command hangar of the Vanishing Point as it sat in a high parabolic orbit around Biko, the ceremony included an honor company of a hundred-and-one enlisted personnel in their dress blues, including the six Spartans and Avery Johnson. After the service, Lieutenant Commander Nyeto—now the de facto commander of Task Force Yama after Ascot's death—approached John-117, who asked if he'd reconsider sidelining them. Nyeto promised that the Spartans would be seeing all the action they could handle for the rest of the operation. However, Crowther again contested this on the basis of them being too young, forcing the lieutenant commander to back down by threatening him with a report to a UNSC board of inquiry. The Black Daggers would board the incoming fleet alone. As everyone left the hangar, Crowther revealed to Johnson that he did not trust Nyeto. He believed that the Spartans were combat-ready, and he was instead sending them on a mission to disrupt Covenant supply lines at Etalan.[22]
Etalan
- Main article: Battle over Etalan
Kurt-051, the other Spartans, Staff Sergeant Johnson, and Dr. Halsey left the Kolaqoa system aboard the Vanishing Point later that day, with two prowlers serving as escort. On March 22, the three ships dropped out of slipspace near Etalan and the Vanishing Point's analysts spent the next four days observing the logistics fleet's movements, trying to discern which vessels would be the best to target. By March 26, they felt confident that four of the fleet's fifteen vessels were equipment freighters that carried spare parts used to keep the Fleet of Inexorable Obedience operational in the field. At this point, the logistics fleet was seemingly preparing to break from orbit, evidenced by the fact that they had begun syncing their orbits and bringing their fusion reactors to full power. Since time was running out, Kurt, the rest of Green Team, and Gold Team were deployed in S-14 Baselards to destroy the equipment freighters while Blue Team stayed on the Vanishing Point and prepared for their phase of the attack. Green and Gold Teams were split up into groups of two to pilot each of their Baselards, with their four Baselards flying at the center of a formation of twenty total Baselards. The plan was for the squadron to pierce through the logistics vessels' fighter screen of Banshees and Seraphs, then the eight Spartans would go EV after faking the destruction of their Baselards. To camouflage their approach, their fighters were equipped with pods of chain-linked debris that would deploy upon the crafts' destruction. Then, the Spartans would board the target vessels and plant HAVOK nukes before fleeing. Due to the high risk involved with performing such maneuvers, Kurt and Joshua-029 were given strict orders to pull their teams out if it became apparent that they would not reach their targets safely.[23] Using these tactics, Kurt and the other seven Spartans ended up successfully destroying the four logistics vessels. Afterwards, when their prowler escorts moved in to extract them from orbit, their retrieval created an unintentional diversion that helped Blue Team deliver the killing blow to the fleet’s munitions carriers.[24]
Zhoist
- Main article: Attack on Zhoist
Kurt’s final mission as part of SILENT STORM would follow three weeks later, when he, the Spartan teams, and what remained of the Black Daggers all ventured into Covenant space, to strike at the heart of one of their supply depots.[25] The Spartans ended up inserting on the surface of Naraka, a planet which was home to ten Forerunner cities, and was the anchor for a massive Covenant support station, a ring structure aptly titled the "Ring of Mighty Abundance."[26] They were ferried down to the surface by their prowlers, but because this was an improvised insertion, Covenant resistance was too heavy for some of the prowlers to finish the drop. Only Green and Blue Teams made it to the ground, while Gold Team’s prowlers were forced to withdraw, and Green’s ship crashed during its final drop. However, Kurt, his team, and a handful of Black Daggers survived, and made their way up into the ring structure via one of the massive gravity lifts connecting the station to the surface. Each Spartan was equipped with a Havok nuke, and two tubs of octanitrocubane explosives; the ODSTs also carried "octas".[27] With these, Green Team managed to destroy roughly three sections of the ring, greatly assisting Blue in the process. The ring became unstable, and after a final detonation from Blue Team, it collapsed and began to crumble into the atmosphere. Kurt and Green Team evacuated, and were picked up by the prowler Night Watch, as were most of the other survivors of Operation: SILENT STORM.[28] Safely on board the Night Watch, Kurt sat with his fellow Spartans and Sergeant Avery Johnson, and viewed the ongoing destruction of the Ring of Mighty Abundance. When it came time for octas carried by fallen or captured “Green Team” Daggers to automatically detonate, he and the others saw eight corresponding explosions, six of which were in the nearby Covenant support fleet. Thus concluded Kurt-051’s involvement in Operation: SILENT STORM.[29]
Camp New Hope
- Main article: Operation: SMOKING ACES
After the death of Samuel-034 during the Battle of Chi Ceti, Kurt replaced Samuel on Blue Team under John-117's leadership and command.[6] At first, his fellow teammates were uneasy about the transition, but their minds were changed during a raid on Camp New Hope to recover nuclear warheads. There, Kurt's talent for sensing danger saved Blue Team from being captured by the rebel General Howard Graves. Graves had set an ingenious trap for the Spartans, which used antigravity plates to fool their armor's systems into reacting as if gravity had increased, knocking them unconscious and allowing Graves to keep them immobile with neural-inhibitor collars. John, Kelly, Fred, and Linda were trapped in Graves' clutches. Kurt saved them with four Asteroidea anti-personnel mines, then removed their collars and got them out in a patchwork Warthog APC. Any mixed feelings John had previously vanished. John told Kurt never to hide his "feelings" again, and Kelly, better with words than John, welcomed the Spartan to the team.[30]
Training the SPARTAN-IIIs
Soon after, Kurt and Blue Team participated in an extravehicular mission to investigate reported suspicious activity at Construction Platform 966A. During the mission, Kurt approached a ruptured Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine when his T-PACK "malfunctioned", sending him spinning away into deep space. He was listed as missing in action and presumed dead. However, Kurt was recovered by ONI, which had manufactured the whole mission to allow Colonel James Ackerson to recruit the Spartan with new orders to train the next generation of SPARTANs. While his former identity as SPARTAN-051 remained as MIA, Kurt was given a new surname and an officer's commission, as Lieutenant, Junior Grade.[31] Kurt Ambrose was then sent to the classified planet Onyx to train the SPARTAN-IIIs with CPO Mendez.[32] Over time, he was promoted for his successful efforts in training the new Spartans, having reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander by 2545.[33]
Kurt cared deeply for each of the Spartan companies he trained, and was profoundly distraught by deaths of the entire SPARTAN-III Alpha Company in Operation: PROMETHEUS. Attributing their demise to the loss of unit cohesion, he vowed not to let future Spartan generations share their fate and focused on honing the Spartans' teamwork capabilities when training Beta Company.[34] Nevertheless, Beta Company was also wiped out almost entirely in Operation: TORPEDO despite Kurt's efforts.
After the destruction of Beta Company, Kurt managed to have the two remaining survivors, Tom-B292 and Lucy-B091 reassigned to accompany him and Mendez in training Gamma Company; he had to appeal to Vice Admiral Parangosky who eventually agreed—over Ackerson's objections. The two would become Kurt's top adjutants over the years.[35] Additionally, while the SPARTAN-IIIs were initially intended as cannon fodder, Kurt and Mendez recognized that a number of the trainees were too skilled to be wasted on suicide missions, so they removed them from their respective companies before they were wiped out, gave them MJOLNIR armor, and assigned them to other units, some of them becoming NOBLE Team.[36]
With Gamma Company, whom he came to regard as the "finest Spartans ever",[35] Kurt secretly added a series of illegal drugs to the augmentation procedures in order to heighten the Spartans' aggressive response, giving them a better chance of survival in battle. This was against the recommendations of Onyx's AI Deep Winter, who was concerned with the Spartans' well-being.[37]
Onyx Conflict
- Main article: Onyx Conflict
At the outbreak of hostilities in Zone 67 on October 31, 2552, Kurt regrouped with Tom-B292 and Lucy-B091 at Camp Currahee and willfully used the SPI armor used by the SPARTAN-IIIs instead of his superior MJOLNIR armor as he told Lucy-B091 that he was one of them now, a SPARTAN III, once again displaying his utmost concern for the morale of his team.[38]
Later on during the conflict, he reunited with Dr. Halsey and Kelly-087. Dr. Halsey, along with the help of the ONI AI Endless Summer, was able to send a message through slipspace by using Cortana's original broadcast from Installation 05 as a carrier wave. She asked Fleet Admiral Hood to send Spartans to Onyx in order to acquire possible Forerunner technology.[40] The SPARTAN-IIs on Earth, Fred-104, Will-043, and Linda-058 infiltrated and captured a Covenant vessel, the Bloodied Spirit, which they took to Onyx where they met Kurt. Kurt then led the Spartans on a mission into the newly uncovered Forerunner city on Onyx to locate the technology Dr. Halsey had been looking for.[41]
The mission was abruptly complicated due to the Covenant fleet led by Voro Nar 'Mantakree locating Onyx and learning of the humans' mission. Kurt and his team managed to acquire information pertaining to Onyx in a map room, where it dawned to them that the planet was actually an artificial structure.[42] Dr. Halsey convinced Kurt to push on into a room in Onyx's core, deducing that it held something of significant importance to the Forerunners.[43] After escaping Covenant forces using Onyx's teleportation grid, were redirected by Zone 67's AI Endless Summer to destroy a Sentinel manufacturing facility. After destroying the factory they located the missing Spartans of Team Katana, who had been placed in Forerunner slipspace field pods.[44]
Before they proceeded further toward the "shield world" which, according to Dr. Halsey, held the Forerunner technologies they sought, Kurt confronted the doctor, realizing she was not telling the full truth behind her mission. After first inquiring Kurt about the specifics of the Spartan-IIIs' augmentations, Dr. Halsey revealed Kurt her true reasons behind her quest to Onyx; instead of recovering Forerunner technology, she intended to shelter the Spartans in the shield world inside Onyx's core, predicting that the UNSC would lose the war.[45] Despite this revelation, Kurt decided they continue inside the core room, retrieve any useful technologies and then escape. In case they failed, they could use the pair of FENRIS nuclear warheads they had brought with them to ensure the technology did not fall into Covenant hands.[46]
Last stand and death
Inside the vast core room antechamber of Onyx, Kurt and the Spartans assumed defensive positions around the slipspace portal leading to the shield world in order to prevent the Covenant from accessing it. As Covenant forces started translocating inside the chamber in increasingly large numbers, it quickly became clear that the humans would soon be overrun. Kurt then ordered the others to enter the slipspace rift before it closed, while he opted to stay behind and detonate the warheads. Kurt commissioned Fred as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade before sending them to the shield world in order to give the remaining Spartans a leader to follow.[47] Eventually, only Tom-B292 and Lucy-B091 remained, hesitant to leave Kurt behind. Knowing they could not be convinced otherwise, Kurt knocked Tom out with a punch and hefted him into the rift. Though reluctant, Lucy finally obeyed Kurt's orders and stepped through the portal as well.[48]
Kurt, now alone and mortally injured from a previous firefight, listed the Spartans fallen in the battle as MIA—including himself, alongside his former identity as SPARTAN-051. He successfully delayed the Covenant forces until the slipspace portal had closed. In his death throes, Kurt had a vision of all the fallen SPARTAN-IIs and SPARTAN-IIIs by his side, nodding and giving him the thumbs-up signal, forging his resolve to complete his one final task. Fleet Master Voro Nar 'Mantakree then approached him, gloating that once the "demon" was dead, the Covenant would reopen the shield world portal. Laughing in determination, Kurt replied "Die? Didn't you know? Spartans never die" and detonated the warheads, wiping out the Covenant army and thus preventing the Covenant from following his comrades and gaining access to the technologies inside the shield world.[49]
Legacy
Kurt died in the end as a brilliant commander in the eyes of those he had known, and as a noble hero who cared deeply for his SPARTAN-IIIs and SPARTAN-IIs as comrades and friends, John-117 included. After the conclusion of the Human-Covenant War in 2553, his still-intact Spartan armor transponder was detected by the UNSC Glamorgan in the debris field that was formerly Onyx, leading to the rescue of remaining UNSC personnel in the shield world.[50] In honor of Kurt, Dr. Halsey, with Admiral Parangosky's approval, named the micro Dyson sphere "ONI Research Facility Trevelyan". At first, Chief Mendez suggested using the name "Ambrose", but Halsey opted that they use Kurt's real name.[51]
Personality and traits
Kurt was unusually sociable for a Spartan and considered the well being of his teammates more important than the whims of his commanding officers. While the rest of his teammates were closely guarded and private unless around other Spartans, Kurt spent a considerable amount of time making friends, such as with the drill instructors. This made some of his fellow Spartans uneasy, as they were not comfortable with a leader who was so easily distracted. Despite these perceptions, Kurt proved himself to be an extremely proficient leader.[6] After his indoctrination into the SPARTAN-III program, his leadership qualities became even more pronounced.[52] While training the Spartan-IIIs he took great pride in them and their losses traumatized him.
Kurt had an uncanny ability to "feel" traps, and avoid walking into them. When something was wrong, Kurt would often get a bad feeling. When John-117 and Kurt were on separate teams during training, John often lost as a result of Kurt's "funny feelings". His teammates grew to view this as an asset, trusting Kurt's instincts and common sense.[6]
Kurt was among the best of the Spartan-IIs, right next to John-117 in skill and superiority. Kurt, Fred-104, Fhajad-084, Musa-096 and Serin-019 are the only Spartan-IIs to become officers. Kurt was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, "courtesy" of Colonel Ackerson.
He last donned his MJOLNIR armor during SPARTAN-III Alpha Company's introduction to the program but chose not to wear it since, although he maintained the suit in a pristine condition in a safe within his private quarters. Lucy-B091 was thoroughly surprised when she saw the armor, suggesting that Kurt had not shown it even to his senior NCOs.[38]
Trivia
- "Ambrose", the pseudonym assigned to Kurt by Ackerson, comes from the late Latin name Ambrosius, which was derived from the Greek name Αμβρόσιος (Αmbrosios) meaning "immortal"; this could reference the fact that Spartans are never marked as KIA in an attempt to uphold the belief that Spartans never die. This is appropriate, as his last words were, "Die? Didn't you know? Spartans never die." From a real-world perspective, Kurt was likely named in honor of the late Stephen Ambrose, the author of the historical biography Band of Brothers, which was later adapted into an HBO miniseries. The name of the camp where Kurt trained the SPARTAN-IIIs, Camp Currahee, is a reference to Band of Brothers.
- Kurt and Jorge-052 were the only SPARTAN-IIs known to have been involved in the SPARTAN-III program. Coincidentally, both sacrifice themselves and their Spartan tags are consecutive integers.
- "Kurt" is one of the name options for customized loadouts in Halo: Reach, along with the members of NOBLE Team and several SPARTAN-IIs.[53]
