John-117 in Cryo is an easter egg in Halo: Reach's campaign level The Pillar of Autumn.

By holding the right analog stick to the right in the part of the cinematic where Captain Keyes' Pelican lands in a hangar bay in the Pillar of Autumn, one can see John-117 lying in a cryo-chamber in the hangar.[1]

Trivia

  • The easter egg is similar to the Buck and Monkeyman egg in the Halo 3: ODST epilogue; with the only difference being that the player needs to push the right analog stick to the left in order to see the egg in ODST.
  • It appears that the Master Chief has a combat knife. This is because his model is simply a normal Spartan with the right combination of armor components, unlike the members of Noble Team.
  • Only the helmet, chest, and left shoulder pauldron are visible. Though the Master Chief's wrist and leg attachments are known (both are default), it's still unknown what knee guards he wears. Unless Bungie confirms it, hacking will be necessary.
  • Note that the cryo-chamber present in the easter egg is the same one as the one seen in Halo 3 instead of the one seen in Halo: Combat Evolved.
  • Soon after the easter egg was discovered a very heated debate stirred on Bungie.net's forums on whether the Spartan was really Linda and not John. The debate became so noticable, that GameInformer asked Marcus Lehto who the Spartan really is. Lehto responded saying it's John-117. Evil Otto says that the Spartan is supposed to look like John and Brian Jarred says John would not be in campaign at all. RoosterTeeth has even taken note of the debate in their recent video.

  1. ^ Game Informer, November 2010: Marcus Lehto: "That is in fact the Master Chief. We felt that if he were to show up anywhere, this was the place to do it. Placing him in the "hushed casket" was the one way we felt his presence in Reach would be appropriate. Anything greater than that would have diminished the importance of Noble team, including yourself as the last remaining Spartan willing to stay behind and fight on Reach to the very bitter end."
