History

Beginnings: 2004

Halopedia, began in late 2004 as a project to document the Halo fictional universe. It quickly attracted a small following of users. After the creation of Halowiki.net, the wiki's name was changed to "Halopedia," and moved to www.halopedia.org. While Halo Wiki and Halopedia appear to be in direct competition against each other, they are actually sister projects that have very different goals. Halopedia is a wiki about the story of Halo, while halowiki.net is a "Halo 2 multiplayer repository."[1]

Halopedia started to be recognized in early 2006, even getting mentions from Bungie Studios[2], the company which created the Halo games. As word spread, the site gained a reputation as the location for accurate info on the Halo fictional universe.[3]

Rocky upbringing

Halopedia soon became a victim of its own success as its growing community began to present a major problem for its creators; the site's growing size was producing a bill in excess of US$150 a month for every server usage and average ping. Throughout May, June and July of 2006, the site would be sporadically down, until it finally went offline for several weeks. Eventually, Halopedia was merged with halo.wikia.com, a formerly rival wiki that did not have the same issues. Despite the painstaking process of having to copy every article from the original Halopedia, the site ultimately benefited with several new active users and a severe drop in vandalization, going from at least 2 or three vandalisms a day to almost none.

Now

Currently, Halopedia continues to grow in anticipation of many new projects planned for the Halo franchise, such as the Halo Movie and Halo 3: ODST. While Halopedia itself frowns upon speculation in its articles[4], its talk pages have become a central place for speculation and discussion of the upcoming productions.

Halopedia has come to be regarded as accurate and reliable among Halo fans and media alike[5][6]; a search of "Halopedia" will produce over 792,000 results on Google, many of which are users on various forums and websites citing Halopedia articles as sources of information. Halopedia presents a wide arrangement of Halo related info. From Halo: Combat Evolved to Halo 3, Halopedia will have almost all the information about Halo, edited by the members of Halopedia.

On August 12th, 2008, the 5,000th article was created by CommanderTony. And on July 19th, 2009, the six Usergroups of Halopedia were disbanded due to inactivity.
