Armor mods are gameplay enhancements featured in Halo 5: Guardians. They are prominently featured in the Warzone gamemode as REQ upgrades unlockable via the requisition system for use in a player's loadout, and in the co-operative campaign of the game. In co-op, the various upgrades are used by the co-op Spartan characters, as a way to differentiate the individual members of Blue Team and Fireteam Osiris.
Armor mods are similar to the tactical packages and support upgrades introduced in Halo 4's multiplayer.
Overview[edit]
Multiplayer[edit]
In Halo 5: Guardians's multiplayer, armor mods are available for use in the Warzone gamemode and its various variants (Warzone Firefight, Warzone Assault, Warzone Turbo, etc). They can be unlocked for use as part of the game's RNG REQ system - the individual REQ cards and their unlock requirements are listed further down this article. Below is a list of the general effects of each armor mod and what gameplay alterations they do - for full statistics, see further down this page.
- Advanced Sensors - Combines the effects of Sensor and Awareness support upgrades from Halo 4. Increases motion tracker effectiveness.
- Auto-Medic - Combines the effects of Shielding tactical package and Recharge support upgrade from Halo 4. Increases health and shield recharge rates.
- Frag Grenade Expert - Similar to Grenadier tactical package from Halo 4 but only for Frag Grenades. Increases starting and max grenade capacity.
- Plasma Grenade Expert - Similar to Grenadier tactical package from Halo 4 but only for Plasma Grenades. Increases starting and max grenade capacity.
- Splinter Grenade Expert - Similar to Grenadier tactical package from Halo 4 but only for Splinter Grenades. Increases starting and max grenade capacity.
- Increased Strength - Similar to Resistor tactical package from Halo 4. Increases melee and spartan charge effectiveness. Damage no longer disables sprint.
- Reflex Enhancer - Combines the effects of Dexterity tactical package and Stealth support upgrade from Halo 4. Increases character handling and assassination speeds.
- Speed Booster - Increases movement speed and jump height.
- Upgraded Shields - Increases shield strength.
- Upgraded Thrusters - Similar to AA Efficiency tactical package from Halo 4. Increases thruster and sprint speed. Increases thruster recharge rate.
Four armor mods were added to Halo 5: Guardians over the course of the game's expansions:
- Death From Above - added in Hammer Storm. Increases ground pound effectiveness.
- Grenadier - added in Ghosts of Meridian. Similar to Explosives support upgrade from Halo 4. Increases grenade effectiveness and explosive damage resistance.
- Wheelman - added in Memories of Reach. Similar to Wheelman tactical package from Halo 4. Increases vehicle survivability.
- Patrol Case - added in Warzone Firefight. Similar to Ammo support upgrade from Halo 4. Increases starting and max ammo capacity.
As far as the game engine internal logic is concerned, Wheelman and Patrol Case are not armor mods. Rather than using the armor mod tag system, they instead behave similarly to the Wheelman tactical package and Ammo support upgrade both featured in Halo 4.
Campaign[edit]
In the Halo 5: Guardians campaign, every level features four co-op Spartan characters from one of two Spartan teams. Each member of each team has a unique loadout of weapons and armor mods, the latter of which are listed below. Characters can only have one armor mod equipped at a time-for this reason the characters of Fireteam Osiris and Blue Team each have their own armor mods that combine multiple abilities, in addition to balancing tweaks exclusive to campaign.
Below is a list of the armor mods used in campaign:
- Upgraded Thrusters is used by Fireteam Osiris. Blue Team also benefits from an effect of Upgraded Thrusters; both teams' shields and health recharge while sprinting.
- Auto-Medic is used by Blue Team. It is otherwise unchanged from multiplayer.
- Frag Grenade Expert is used by Jameson Locke and Frederic-104. It combines the effects of Grenadier without the increase to grenade throw speed. Locke and Fred have an 80% explosive damage resistance compared to Warzone's 75%.
- Increased Strength is used by Edward Buck and John-117. It is otherwise unchanged from multiplayer.
- Advanced Sensors is used by Holly Tanaka and Linda-058. It only increases motion tracker range to 125% instead of Warzone's 160%. It does not make either character harder to detect on motion trackers, due to having no use in campaign.
- Speed Booster is used by Olympia Vale and Kelly-087. Neither character receives a jump height increase. Instead Vale is given 125% clamber speed while Kelly is equipped with Reflex Enhancer.
- Reflex Enhancer is used only by Kelly-087. Kelly's melee speed is increased to 130% rather than the 140% bonus present in Warzone.
