That seems pretty genocidal, actually, letting your own species go extinct like that. Honestly I've wondered this myself, and figured things like "they left to a different galaxy", "on other planets that humanity hasn't encountered yet", "they're still in stasis in the shield worlds and have yet to be reawakened" or "their numbers were too diminished to let them survive". I think the third one is most likely, and intriguing.
