Project GUNGNIR was a top-secret UNSC program under the supervision of Section Three of the Office of Naval Intelligence,[1] designed to provide supplementary matériel for the SPARTAN Program.[2] Section Three's then-head Vice Admiral Michael Stanforth had some degree of involvement with the project.
The program resulted in the creation of the Model 6 Grindell/Galilean Nonlinear Rifle, more commonly known as the Spartan Laser, as well as many supplementary armor systems, including the MJOLNIR Mark V[G] variant, which consists of a helmet, shoulder pauldrons, and knee guards.[3][4] Some of these armor components, including the shoulders and knee guards, are also utilized by the UNSC Army and the UNSC Marine Corps.
Trivia
- In Norse mythology, Gungnir ("swaying one") is Odin's magical spear, which is an infallibly accurate weapon. The symbol for Project GUNGNIR is also a version of the Norse Gungnir symbol. The symbol is located on the side of the Spartan Laser, and on the faceplate of the GUNGNIR helmet.[5][6] The weapon's abbreviation, M6 G/GNR, bears a notable resemblance to the name "Gungnir." Like the Spartan Laser, the Gungnir of mythology is an extremely accurate weapon.
- The GUNGNIR symbol can be seen on the side of the forklift in Halo: Reach.
