The smoke grenade is is a canister-type grenade used for a variety and diversity of reasons. There are a variety of smoke-producing items, few of which have been observed being in use by the UNSC.

Like signal flares, the smoke grenades are used to signal for pickup after a mission, or a request for an equipment drop, or even a need for emergency evacuation. Different reasons appear to have different colors of smoke attached to them; for example, blue smoke is used to signal for pickup.[1][2] A type of training smoke grenade was commonly carried by Orbital Drop Shock Troopers during the Fall of Reach and the Battle of Mombasa in 2552.[3][4][5][6][7][8] Three of these grenades were typically attached to the ODST armor's belt by attachment connectors on the canister's lid.[6]

Production notes

In Halo: Reach, the serial number M45A771B is printed on the canister; the same serial number is printed on the 40mm grenade (albeit mirrored), the M392 DMR, and the MA37 assault rifle, it is likely all four items share the same decal sheet.
