Ganymede is a natural satellite governed by the Unified Earth Government and is the largest moon of Jupiter in the Sol system.
Overview[edit]
Topography and ecology[edit]
Ganymede is traditionally an airless body, and as such the majority of human settlement on the moon takes place inside a vast underground terraformed cavern system.[1] The moon's surface remains harsh to life.[2]
Locations[edit]
Known residents[edit]
- Paul Gustafson (c.2539)
History[edit]
Rise of humanity[edit]
Ganymede was one of many bodies of the Solar System settled by humanity during the early half of the 22nd century. This era would see Ganymede become home to a significant Frieden presence, and was one of several sites involved in the Jovian Moons Campaign of the Interplanetary War. By mid-2169, Ganymede (along with many other Jovian Moons) had been invaded by the UNSC Marine Corps, and Frieden forces destroyed.[6]
Human-Covenant War[edit]
The EVA-class Mjolnir was first created and tested at the Low/Zero Gravity Testing Facility on Ganymede.[3]
Government and society[edit]
Ganymede is famously proud and isolationist, and as such retains troubled relations with its neighbours. The moon is divided into numerous habitat-states including Aigburth - the political chaos of which is regarded as entertaining, if not educational.[1]
Trivia[edit]
- The country Aigburth is a reference to the British TV series Red Dwarf. It is from the name The Aigburth Arms, where the character Lister was found abandoned as a baby. The city Lister is also a reference to the show, Dave Lister being one of the main characters.
- In the Halo: Reach live-action short Spaceport, Ganymede is a destination listed at the Manassas Spaceport.
