Background
Production notes
The M7S is one of several weapons cut during the production of Halo 2. In this iteration, the M7S was simply the regular M7 SMG with a sound suppressor attached, alongside updated particles and sound effects. The weapon was later introduced in the Halo 2 PC port as a default spawn on the Example map, and for use in modding. The weapon is also found by default on the cut map Beach Battle, similarly-intended for use as a modding tutorial.
The M7S is a variant of the M7 Caseless Submachine Gun, which fires 5mm x 23 M443 Caseless Full Metal Jacket ammunition. This variant features an external flash and sound suppressor on the barrel along with a laser sight. Recoil from all but sustained fire is very controllable. Although the M7 submachine-gun is primarily issued to vehicle crews, it is also a favorite of commando teams in its sound suppressed version. Sustained automatic fire tends to cause the muzzle to “walk” upwards as recoil compounds. Submachine guns, while not accurate over long distances, are particularly effective in close quarters. Muzzle flash is significantly decreased, and firing the weapon gives a barely noticeable sound, increasing stealth applications for the M7S Submachine Gun and increasing accuracy from decreased recoil making the weapon more efficient at medium-long range. It is a good weapon for stealth and hit-and-run missions.

Appearances
The weapon was first canonically mentioned in the Bungie.net article for the M7 SMG in Halo 3, referencing the Halo 2 M7S, before properly being introduced as a staple weapon of Halo 3: ODST, and in the updated multiplayer component of Halo 2: Anniversary.
*Although the M7S does not make any appearance in the game, it is in the files of Halo 2 Vistas built-in map editor. The map is simply named "Example" and the map's description is "This is just a small example of what you can do as a Halo 2 cartographer!".
*The M7S can also be seen in the gallery section of the Halo Graphic Novel.
*In Halo: First Strike where SPARTAN-117 carry's two M7S SMGs, however he only uses the BR55 Battle Rifle during Operation: FIRST STRIKE.
*In Halo: Contact Harvest, Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson and his squad of Marines used suppressed M7's to take out a room in a bomb factory filled with Insurrectionists in the prologue of the book.

Changes From Standard M7
In Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the release of Halo 2 on PC saw the M7S added to the game's shared file directory, allowing anyone to use it via modding. The release of Halo 3: ODST on PC later saw the M7S ported into Halo 3, available for use in multiplayer and Forge.
*The M7S is attached with a sound suppressor as obviously indicated.
*The M7S is also attached with a red dot "reflex" scope. Making it more effective in dark areas, night and in general close quarters combat.
*An extra attached flashlight attached under the suppressor off to the bottom left side of the barrel, similar to the Shotgun.
*In the Halo 3: ODST demo shown at E3 2009, it is only shown with 48 rounds in the magazine. Though whether or not this will stay for the released product is not yet known as the Bungie.net Field Guide is listed with a 60 round magazine.

The M7S Submachine Gun, sometimes referred to as the Suppressed or Silenced SMG or more colloquially by UNSC personnel as the bullet hose, black box, chum and popcorn, is a personal defense weapon issued to UNSC Armed Forces special operators.[1]

Overview[edit]

Design details[edit]

A variant of the M7 SMG, the M7S is equipped with an external flash and SS/M 49 sound suppressor on the barrel along with an underbarrel flashlight.[1] To assist the user in target acquisition, the weapon is fitted with a SLS/V 5B smart-linked scope.[1] Muzzle flash is significantly reduced, and firing the weapon gives a barely noticeable sound, increasing stealth applications for the M7S Submachine Gun and increasing accuracy from decreased recoil, making the weapon more efficient at medium-long range. It fires 5×23mm M443 Caseless Full Metal Jacket from a reduced 48-round magazine.[1] Some usage of the M7S sees the SMG employed with a laser sight.[4]

History[edit]

The M7S was introduced into UNSC service in 2431[2], and saw use during the Insurrection. The M7S was notably employed by SPARTAN-II Blue Team during Operation: TALON, during which they captured URF leader Robert Watts.[5] The weapon continued to see use throughout the Human-Covenant War, becoming notably iconic in the hands of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. The weapon saw heavy use during the Battle of Mombasa in late 2552[6], and has since continued to see use by ODST units in the Post-Covenant War conflicts.[7][4]

Gameplay[edit]

Changes from Halo 2 Vista to Halo 3: ODST[edit]

 • The weapon lacks an activated laser sight, which is now mitigated to a simple aesthetic on the weapon.
 • The M7S now has a 2× zoom scope, adding more ranged capabilities.

Changes from Halo 3: ODST to Halo 2: Anniversary[edit]

 • The magazine size is increased from 48 to 60 and ammo capacity also increased from 192 to 240.
 • The M7S can now be dual wielded, however the player will be unable to utilize the guns' scope while dual wielding.
 • The weapon now has visible reticle bloom in place of spread.

Changes from Halo 2: Anniversary to Halo 3[edit]

 • Can no longer be dual wielded.
 • Visible reticle bloom is replaced by spread.

Production notes[edit]

The M7S is one of several weapons cut during the production of Halo 2. In this iteration, the M7S was simply the regular M7 SMG with a sound suppressor attached, alongside updated particles and sound effects. The weapon was later introduced in the Halo 2 PC port as a default spawn on the Example map, and for use in modding. The weapon is also found by default on the cut map Beach Battle, similarly-intended for use as a modding tutorial.

The weapon was first canonically mentioned in the Bungie.net article for the M7 SMG in Halo 3,[8] referencing the Halo 2 M7S, before properly being introduced as a staple weapon of Halo 3: ODST, and in the updated multiplayer component of Halo 2: Anniversary.

Trivia[edit]

 • The M7S is the starting weapon in most Firefight levels in Halo 3: ODST except for Windward, where the player starts with a sniper rifle instead.
 • The Halo 3: ODST manual erroneously states that the M7S is "a sound-suppressed variant of the M7 rifle".
 • In Halo Wars 2, the M7S SMGs wielded by ODSTs are equipped with laser sights.
