Unbeknownst to Janine, that sample contained Flood spores, and due to her negligence, Janine became patient zero of a legendarily horrific pandemic that had been asleep for millennia until that moment. Under the influence of the spores, she attacked and presumably killed a fellow scientist, landing her in a prison holding cell next to Kessler, Laera, and James Ackerson.
