Vedrana "Mako" Makovich, callsign Windfall-One, was a SPARTAN-IV supersoldier who served as team leader of Fireteam Windfall in the United Nations Space Command.[1][4]

Biography[edit]

Early life and service[edit]

Vedrana Makovich was born on the human colony of Andesia on April 9, 2531. She would eventually enlist in the UNSC Air Force, making a name for herself as one of their most versatile and adept pilots. After auspicious stints flying a wide range of fighter craft, Makovich was invited to join the SPARTAN-IV program at some point following the Human-Covenant War.[1]

Spartan career[edit]

At some point between 2557 and 2558, Vedrana Makovich participated in F-41 Broadsword sorties on Requiem. By December 2559, Makovich had run multiple operations with Fireteam Windfall for years, including Prowler Corps maneuvers on a Kig-Yar purse-moon, as well as strikes on Jiralhanae raiding parties alongside the Swords of Sanghelios.[5] She was also instrumental in the development of the production model Sabre.[1] She held a reputation as one of the best pilots, and was even something of a hero to the flight squadrons on UNSC Infinity.[6]

Installation 07[edit]

Main article: Battle for Zeta Halo

On December 12, 2559, Spartan Vedrana Makovich was onboard a Sabre escorting UNSC Infinity when it was ambushed by Banished forces upon arrival at Installation 07. As the Infinity fell to the Banished assault, Makovich and her teammate Henri Malik engaged Banshees that were attacking the lifeboats launching from the Infinity.[4][7] Their support extended to clearing the space along the Infinity's drop pod ejection tubes to allow for the deployment of Spartans and ODSTs.[8] By December 13, Makovich has made landfall on the surface of the ring, and was fighting Forerunner Sentinels when a giant explosion on the ring fractured its surface. Maokvich narrowly escaped the ring's fragmentation.[9] On December 15, Makovich came across the wreckage of UNSC Mortal Reverie, and established the crash site as a UNSC base of operations, gathering other UNSC forces at the site.[10] She contacted Spartan Hudson Griffin,[10] and was joined by other UNSC forces.

On January 23, 2560, Spartan Griffin, the operational leader at the crash site, led Spartans Panago, Malik, and Sarkar on an assassination mission on the Banished War Chief Escharum.[11] Makovich voiced her disbelief at the team being chosen by drawing straws,[12] but the mission proceeded at Griffin's command.[11] However, the assassination on Escharum failed. Griffin sent an encrypted message to the Reverie on January 31 before he was captured and handed over to Chak 'Lok for torture. In his message, Griffin warned the Reverie of an impending Banished assault.[13] Under the combined leadership of Spartan Bertold Vettel and counsel of Makovich, the UNSC forces at the Reverie braced for the Banished's attack.[5] Makovich participated in the defense of Reverie, stationed at its secondary barricade with Theodore Sorel, when the crash site came under Banished assault on January 31, 2560.[14] Despite the preparations, the Banished assault under Chieftain Tremonius forced the UNSC forces to retreat from the Reverie on February 2.[15] The UNSC forces scattered into the valley, but Makovich later regrouped with Sorel and Vettel; they enacted the Rubicon Protocol and continued to run guerilla ops against the Banished to keep the ring out of their control.[16] Makovich and Sorel found a crashed UNSC comms satellite and rigged it to broadcast a location ping by cycling through a digital signal chain; they used the satellite sparingly to leave debriefs at the location to reconnect with others.[17]

On April 24, after being told of increased Banished activity near the Reverie by Spartan Bonita Stone,[18] Makovich and Spartan Theodore Sorel observed Site Novem, a Banished excavation site south of the Reverie.[19] The two correctly deduced that Escharum was searching for the Monitor of the installation, 117649 Despondent Pyre, and spent the next few weeks stalling the Banished's excavation efforts.[19]

When the Banished's excavation completed on May 15, Makovich and Sorel infiltrated the Conservatory.[20] Inside, the two were ambushed by the Sangheili Jega 'Rdomnai, with Sorel being wounded by 'Rdomnai's surprise attack. Makovich urged Sorel to run ahead to locate the monitor, while she would fend off 'Rdomnai.[2] Makovich died in the following duel against the Sangheili,[3] while Sorel made a last stand deeper inside the facility, being killed by the Jiralhanae brothers Tovarus and Hyperius.[21] Makovich's body remained inside the Conservatory, and was found on May 28 by Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, who collected her drop wall module.[3]

Equipment[edit]

During the Battle for Zeta Halo, Spartan Makovich wore the Mjolnir GEN3 Mark VII armor, employing the Zvezda helmet, UA/Agathius shoulder pads, and UA/Type SA knee pads.[3] At some point before January 24, 2560, Makovich had her armor's motion sensor replaced, and took the last one in the Reverie's storage.[22] She carried a drop wall module, which was inherited by John-117.[3]

Production notes[edit]

  • Vedrana Makovich was portrayed by voice actress Zehra Fazal,[23] who also lent her voice to the Spartan Voiceprint 16T3 in the multiplayer component of Halo Infinite.[24] Fazal also voiced the ONI agent in Halo Infinite: Memory Agent.[25]
  • Makovich's Mark VII armor coating, Dogfight Makovich, is available in Halo Infinite multiplayer. The armor coating can be unlocked by accessing the Mjolnir Armory locker southeast of the Conservatory. Its name alludes to Makovich's role as a pilot. A Wasp coating of the same name can be unlocked by accessing the Mjolnir Armory locker south of FOB Lima, at the edge of the ring's spine.
