Traveling to the surface of Aktis IV himself, 'Mdama and his forces began to eliminate 'Nyon's insurgents. 'Nyon broadcasted a message across Jul's entire fleet to incite them to join him in rebellion. 'Nyon, with his half of the Janus Key, retreated to his hideout in a jungle. A Sangheili Zealot approached him about the feasibility of continuing the rebellion, to which 'Nyon responded by reassuring his followers that the Forerunners had blessed them, citing his recovery of half of the Janus Key as proof. A Sangheili Minor stated that the Prometheans' allegiance to Jul 'Mdama was evidence to the contrary, but 'Nyon insisted that the answers to their questions would all be revealed in time. While 'Nyon left to help aid the wounded, the Minor, disillusioned with 'Nyon's rebellion, stole his half of the Janus Key and departed on a Type-32 Ghost. The Minor contacted a Zealot serving under 'Mdama, and promised to provide the stolen Janus Key half and 'Nyon's location of his hideout. The Zealot reluctantly agreed and prepared to establish a rendezvous point.

Until September 17, 2558, Sali was kept by Jul aboard the Song of Retribution as he journeyed to a planet that would lead to the Absolute Record. After the death of 'Mdama on Kamchatka, 'Nyon emerged as the clear frontrunner for leader of the Covenant remnants, with some Sangheili, even one in the Swords of Sanghelios, viewing him as a true leader compared to the Arbiter and Jul, and the next best chance for a new Covenant. Some have reported great numbers amassing under his banner on Okal'supen, a fortress world abandoned by the former Covenant, with sufficient  assembly vats and feedstock to rebuild an empire.

Alliance with Dovo Nesto
By November 2559, 'Nyon had forged an alliance with Dovo Nesto, pledging all of his forces to the San'Shyuum's cause of restoring the Covenant empire. According to Nesto, while 'Nyon had claimed to be many things, he was chastised by a universe in which a human AI could pose as a god, causing him to see the light of Nesto's purpose. In reality, Nesto had promised 'Nyon a position of authority in the resurrected Covenant, and a place at the head of the Covenant's military, the same as Nesto had promised the Banished War Chief Severan.

Nesto sought to secure the Lithos, a gateway into the Domain. During the Fall of Reach, while serving under the command of Tulum 'Juranai, 'Nyon had recovered a record of a living clone of Dr. Catherine Halsey that held the key to accessing the Domain. Swords of Sanghelios ranger teams under the command of Mahkee 'Chava extracted a message from Nesto to Kafo Dein about this from a relay mite attached to a battlecruiser belonging to 'Nyon that was stationed on Venezia.

When the Swords of Sanghelios and the UNSC attacked Venezia to capture Nesto, the San'Shyuum contacted 'Nyon for help who sent a battlegroup, possibly including the Breath of Annihilation. However, Severan was unaware that 'Nyon was an ally and fled alongside his enemies, only learning afterwards that 'Nyon had pledged his forces to Nesto and was coming to his aid. Severan expressed his doubts about 'Nyon's fidelity, pointing out his betrayal of Jul 'Mdama. Severan was concerned that an alliance with 'Nyon could damage his position with the Banished and became concerned about what Nesto had promised 'Nyon in order to secure his loyalty.

During the Battle of Boundary, a fleet from Sali 'Nyon's Covenant arrived as well and helped to push the UNSC forces back. The Covenant forces were let through the defensive shell because they had Severan's own fleet's clearance codes. The number of Covenant ships was great enough and they were everywhere once they got through the defensive shell that the Banished were unable to stop 'Nyon from sending out detachments to claim the key to the Lithos for himself. The collusion between Nesto and 'Nyon caused Severan to realize that Nesto had promised the Sangheili what he had already promised Severan. 'Nyon himself made his way to the Banished encampment where Nesto revealed himself, surprising the members of the Eight who were on the ground as they were unaware of Severan working with a San'Shyuum and leading to a standoff that 'Nyon tried to defuse. Covenant dropships unloaded several waves of soldiers which converged on the group of leaders, creating a tense situation where the Banished now appeared to be outnumbered. The UNSC and Swords of Sanghelios team attempted to assassinate Nesto and 'Nyon, but they were betrayed by Blademaster Vul 'Soran and Spartan Merrick who injured Jai-006 and Adriana-111 and killed Spartan Stefan Vidalin.

With this development and with the Banished only minutes away from reaching the Lithos, the Victory of Samothrace was ordered to destroy the Lithos from orbit with a MAC strike in order to deny it to both the Banished and the Covenant. Captain Abigail Cole had the Shadow of Intent attempt to warn the surface team of the incoming strike while ordering the remaining UNSC ships to provide Victory with cover to make the shot against the combined Banished and Covenant forces.

The Banished and Covenant leaders were able to reach an uneasy peace, but Severan realized that he had been lied to and manipulated by Nesto due to not only his alliance with 'Nyon, but Nesto's utter disregard for Severan's ability to accomplish their shared goals despite all he'd pledged and was willing to jeopardize the War Chief's standing with Atriox to undermine it. Nesto's reaction to Severan's lack of respect confirmed that he saw the War Chief only as a pawn and Severan deduced that Nesto had promised 'Nyon the same thing that he had promised Severan: a position of authority in the resurrected Covenant, and a place at the head of the Covenant's military which 'Nyon's surprised reaction confirmed. When Severan refused to bow before the San'Shyuum's right to divinity despite the Banished forces being completely surrounded, Nesto attacked him with 'Nyon's energy sword, but the War Chief cut Nesto's arm off with one of his arm blades, causing battle to break out between the Banished and the Covenant, both on the planet's surface and in orbit.

On the last of the escalating platforms of the Lithos, Nesto, 'Nyon and Severan took cover behind a series of vertical barriers, firing unrelentingly into each other's position. Phantoms from each side moved in and extracted the leaders, leaving the Banished and Covenant ground troops fighting each other without any sort of coordination or cohesion. The UNSC and Swords of Sanghelios team received contact from Rtas 'Vadum ordering them to evacuate before the site was destroyed by the Victory.

In orbit, the Victory was nearly able to get into position to fire before the Banished flagship Heart of Malice joined the fight, ramming the Victory off target and damaging the drive control system, rending Victory unable to maneuver in any way. However, Victorys speed and trajectory still put it in position to fire upon the Lithos. The remaining ships of Omega held off the Banished flagship long enough for Victory to get into position to fire. Victorys MAC successfully fired into the Lithos just before the UNSC flagship was rammed by the Heart of Malice again. Thousands of Banished and Covenant were killed in the strike while the Lithos burst into a pillar of light that tore into the sky. Several dozen ships were vaporized by the Lithos' destruction while others were severely damaged, either cast adrift or sent on a collision course with the planet's surface. The attack sent Victory plummeting to the planet's surface, but the ship's drive actuators unexpectedly came back online, allowing the bridge crew to level the ship out as much as possible before Victory crash landed on Boundary.

Death
The shockwave from the strike caused both Severan's Phantom and 'Nyon's to crash. With the Lithos destroyed, Severan contacted the Heart of Malice and ordered the retreat of all of the remaining Banished ships. Taking an overturned Covenant Ghost, Severan chased down 'Nyon and Dovo Nesto as they escaped in a Abatyar to a parked Phantom.

Severan caught up with the two at the Phantom, killing the Revenant's driver and two guards. As Severan rose from his last kill, 'Nyon lunged at him personally. Severan dueled 'Nyon who moved with remarkable dexterity, elegantly parrying each attack and aiming to exploit the War Chief's injuries and fatigue to his advantage. 'Nyon landed a strike across Severan's thigh, dropping him for a moment. However, rather than taking advantage of this to finish Severan off, in his arrogance 'Nyon paused to wait for Severan to stand again, believing that it was a death knell signaling that the killing blow was approaching. 'Nyon continued his offensive, overwhelming Severan and pushing him back against the Revenant. However, Severan's fury and desire for revenge against Nesto allowed him to rally and fight back against 'Nyon, forcing the Sangheili to fall back. Finally, Severan found a sudden opening, swinging one of his arm blades across 'Nyon's extended attack as the Sangheili performed a miscalculated lunging strike. Severan cut off 'Nyon's right arm at the elbow, rendering him so stunned that he didn't see the second blade until it was too late. Severan decapitated 'Nyon, killing the Covenant leader. Before Severan could kill Nesto, he was stabbed through the back by Blademaster Vul 'Soran who left Severan to die as 'Soran and Nesto escaped in the dropship. Sali 'Nyon is a Sangheili Zealot who previously was in the service of the Covenant faction under Supreme Commander Jul 'Mdama, but after the events on Requiem, he launched a failed attempt to rebel against Jul 'Mdama.[3]

Biography[edit]

Early career[edit]

Sali 'Nyon was born on the colony of Eudolaan on November 5, 2487. As a remarkable warrior and an impassioned believer he excelled within the Covenant military, quickly rising to the rank of zealot commander; even receiving a personal commendation from the High Prophet of Mercy.[1]

'Nyon participated in the Fall of Reach, serving under the command of Tulum 'Juranai. During this conflict, 'Nyon recovered a record of a living clone of Dr. Catherine Halsey.[4]

After the collapse of the empire he returned to his keep, awaiting a sign from the gods which came in the form of joining Jul 'Mdama and his new Covenant.[1]

Battle of Aktis IV[edit]

Catherine Halsey: "Who is this Sali 'Nyon?"
Jul 'Mdama: "An unexceptional warrior and inept commander. But his devotion to the Forerunners is true, and some of our more impressionable brothers are drawn by his fervor."
— Catherine Halsey and Jul 'Mdama discuss Sali 'Nyon[5]

After the events on Requiem and Jul 'Mdama allied himself with Doctor Catherine Halsey, Sali began questioning 'Mdama's true intentions. Sali started to recruit his own followers, viewing himself as the true Hand of the Didact, and plotted against Jul. By July 2558, amidst the Battle of Aktis IV, his followers were identified by 'Mdama's forces. During the battle, after 'Mdama's forces tricked the UNSC into delivering their half of the Janus Key to Aktis IV's surface, 'Nyon's followers shot down the D79H Pelican carrying the Key. This led to confusion among 'Mdama's ranks, whom recognized the attack to be unauthorized by 'Mdama. Nonetheless, 'Mdama's fleet proceeded with their planned attack on the orbiting UNSC Infinity ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, 'Nyon made his way to the Pelican's crash site and retrieved the UNSC's half of the Janus Key for himself.[3]

While 'Nyon left to help aid the wounded, the Minor, disillusioned with 'Nyon's rebellion, stole his half of the Janus Key and departed on a Karo'etba-pattern Ghost. The Minor contacted a Zealot serving under 'Mdama, and promised to provide the stolen Janus Key half and 'Nyon's location of his hideout. The Zealot reluctantly agreed and prepared to establish a rendezvous point.[5]

Not much later, 'Mdama's forces would discover 'Nyon's hideout. Most, if not all, of his followers were killed, and 'Nyon himself was imprisoned. His rebellion had effectively came to an end. 'Mdama, however, would decide to keep 'Nyon alive for the time being.[6]

The Absolute Record[edit]

"Beat me all you like… but you have offended the gods, Jul. And they will see that you are punished."
— Sali 'Nyon to Jul 'Mdama[7]

For the next two months, Jul kept 'Nyon incarcerated in a holding cell aboard his personal flagship, Song of Retribution. Two days prior to setting a course for the Absolute Record, 'Mdama visited Sali 'Nyon in his cell for further interrogation. 'Nyon criticized 'Mdama for his nontraditional method of keeping a prisoner, and he refused to divulge the number of traitors within 'Mdama's faction.[7]

Until September 17, 2558, Sali was kept by Jul aboard the Song of Retribution as he journeyed to a planet that would lead to the Absolute Record. With the fleet damaged by slipspace ruptures, Jul decided to transfer Sali to the damaged Breath of Annihilation, setting down for repairs on a nearby moon, while he took the Song of Retribution alone through the portal.[8] Needing a distraction to keep Spartan Gabriel Thorne alive, ONI agent Ayit 'Sevi arranged for Sali's escape, convincing the former leader that he could rally those loyal to him.[9] 'Nyon would lead a revolt aboard the ship, killing those loyal to 'Mdama and seizing control of 'Mdama's collection of Forerunner artifacts taken from Requiem, using them to further cement his support.[10] 'Nyon took the Breath of Annihilation back into Sangheili space to rally further support among the Covenant remnants, not noticing 'Sevi's absence, and was shortly after engaged by the Song of Retribution, a battle that ended in stalemate with 'Mdama unable to retake the ship.[11]

After the death of 'Mdama on Kamchatka, 'Nyon emerged as the clear frontrunner for leader of the Covenant remnants, with some Sangheili, even one in the Swords of Sanghelios, viewing him as a true leader compared to the Arbiter and Jul, and the next best chance for a new Covenant.[12] Some have reported great numbers amassing under his banner on Okal'supen, a fortress world abandoned by the former Covenant, with sufficient assembly vats and feedstock to rebuild an empire.[1]

Alliance with Dovo Nesto[edit]

By November 2559, 'Nyon had forged an alliance with Dovo Nesto, pledging all of his forces to the San'Shyuum's cause of restoring the Covenant empire. According to Nesto, while 'Nyon had claimed to be many things, he was chastised by a universe in which a human AI could pose as a god, causing him to see the light of Nesto's purpose.[13] In reality, Nesto had promised 'Nyon a position of authority in the resurrected Covenant, and a place at the head of the Covenant's military, the same as Nesto had promised the Banished War Chief Severan.[14]

Nesto sought to secure the Lithos, a gateway into the Domain. During the Fall of Reach, while serving under the command of Tulum 'Juranai, 'Nyon had recovered a record of a living clone of Dr. Catherine Halsey that held the key to accessing the Domain. Swords of Sanghelios ranger teams under the command of Mahkee 'Chava extracted a message from Nesto to Kafo Dein about this from a relay mite attached to a battlecruiser belonging to 'Nyon that was stationed on Venezia.[4]

Severan was concerned that an alliance with 'Nyon could damage his position with the Banished and became concerned about what Nesto had promised 'Nyon in order to secure his loyalty.[15][13]

During the Battle of Boundary, a fleet from Sali 'Nyon's Covenant arrived as well[16] and helped to push the UNSC forces back. The collusion between Nesto and 'Nyon caused Severan to realize that Nesto had promised the Sangheili what he had already promised Severan.[17] 'Nyon himself made his way to the Banished encampment where Nesto revealed himself, surprising the members of the Eight who were on the ground as they were unaware of Severan working with a San'Shyuum and leading to a standoff that 'Nyon tried to defuse. Covenant dropships unloaded several waves of soldiers which converged on the group of leaders, creating a tense situation where the Banished now appeared to be outnumbered. The UNSC and Swords of Sanghelios team attempted to assassinate Nesto and 'Nyon, but they were betrayed by Blademaster Vul 'Soran and Spartan Merrick who injured Jai-006 and Adriana-111 and killed Spartan Stefan Vidalin.[18]

With this development and with the Banished only minutes away from reaching the Lithos, the UNSC Victory of Samothrace was ordered to destroy the Lithos from orbit with a MAC strike in order to deny it to both the Banished and the Covenant. Captain Abigail Cole had the Shadow of Intent attempt to warn the surface team of the incoming strike while ordering the remaining UNSC ships to provide Victory with cover to make the shot against the combined Banished and Covenant forces.[19]

When Severan refused to bow before the San'Shyuum's right to divinity despite the Banished forces being completely surrounded, Nesto attacked him with 'Nyon's energy sword, but the War Chief cut Nesto's arm off with one of his arm blades, causing battle to break out between the Banished and the Covenant,[20] both on the planet's surface and in orbit.[21]

The UNSC and Swords of Sanghelios team received contact from Rtas 'Vadum ordering them to evacuate before the site was destroyed by the Victory.[22]

In orbit, the Victory was nearly able to get into position to fire before the Banished flagship Heart of Malice joined the fight, ramming the Victory off target and damaging the drive control system, rending Victory unable to maneuver in any way. However, Victory's speed and trajectory still put it in position to fire upon the Lithos. The remaining ships of Omega held off the Banished flagship long enough for Victory to get into position to fire. Victory's MAC successfully fired into the Lithos just before the UNSC flagship was rammed by the Heart of Malice again.[23] Thousands of Banished and Covenant were killed in the strike while the Lithos burst into a pillar of light that tore into the sky. Several dozen ships were vaporized by the Lithos' destruction while others were severely damaged, either cast adrift or sent on a collision course with the planet's surface.[24] The attack sent Victory plummeting to the planet's surface, but the ship's drive actuators unexpectedly came back online, allowing the bridge crew to level the ship out as much as possible before Victory crash landed on Boundary.[25]

Death[edit]

The shockwave from the strike caused both Severan's Phantom and 'Nyon's to crash. With the Lithos destroyed, Severan contacted the Heart of Malice and ordered the retreat of all of the remaining Banished ships. Taking an overturned Covenant Ghost, Severan chased down 'Nyon and Dovo Nesto as they escaped in a Abatyar-pattern Revenant[26] to a parked Phantom.[27]

However, Severan was rescued by Kaevus in a Trespasser.[2]

'Nyon's body was later recovered by the UNSC[28] while his Covenant was taken over by Nesto.[29]
