Well, this is a theory and speculation but I think the Flood came from an indigenous planet, brought by the Forerunners, reproduce in great numbers and successfully conquered the Milky Way. This stage of the Flood raises some questions, especially given that they/it have reached a critical mass that must depart, or starve to death if they do not do so. In many ways the Flood are not only like viruses and other pathogens, but Locusts as well. In that comparison, they breed and spread rapidly while consuming food, but once their work is done, they starve, die off in large numbers, and revert back to their original state.

Perhaps that is what happens in this stage; the "critical mass" that the Flood possesses leaves a galaxy, but in the course of its travels across the intergalactic and quite probably slipspace distances, they are weakened, hungered, and ravaged, and revert to the Feral Stage once more, starting again. That way, they are a constant but cyclical entity, which would be valuable because we know that the Flood can be readily starved, and it would ensure the greatest chance of survival, especially if they arrived in a galaxy with very little life. --Exalted Obliteration 04:28, February 7, 2010 (UTC)
