Captain Maribeau Veredi was a Colonial Military Administration officer during the beginning of the Human-Covenant War. He was the commanding officer of the destroyer CMA Heracles and the commander of Battlegroup 4. He had the dubious honor of making the first recorded contact with the Covenant.
Biography
Harvest
In October 2525, Captain Veredi led CMA Battlegroup 4. The battle group consisted of his own ship, the destroyer UNSC Heracles and two frigates, the Arabia and the Vostok. They were deployed to discover why contact had been lost with the planet Harvest and the scout ship Argo, which had been deployed six months earlier.[1]
On October 7, the battle group entered the Epsilon Indi system only to discover that the planet had been rendered a wasteland, with what left that was not incinerated into molten glass undergoing a nuclear winter. This high-temperature bombardment would later become known as "glassing".
First contact
In orbit around the remains of the colony world was a single alien ship, which proceeded to attack the battle group; within one minute, it destroyed both the Arabia and the Vostok and badly damaged the Heracles.[Note 1] Before the ship attacked the battlegroup, Veredi attempted to follow the UNSC's first contact protocol to no avail.[2][3]
The aliens tranmitted a message to the Heracles, which had already been translated into English The message stated, "Your destruction is the will of the Gods, and we are their instrument."[1][2][3]
Second Battle of Harvest
Captain Veredi later served during the Second Battle of Harvest. There, he commanded the repaired Heracles and accompanied Vice Admiral Preston Cole into the system, successfully retaking it from the Covenant.[2][4]
