The Greater Chicago Industrial Zone (often referred to simply as "The Zone") is a Human city on Earth, located on the continent of North America near Lake Michigan. An outgrowth of the modern-day American city of Chicago, the Zone is a vast urban sprawl covering large parts of the "former" states of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.[1] The Great Lakes Spaceport is located nearby. Before battle of Earth, Chicago had a population of 54 million people.

While physically located in the United States, the Zone is a de-facto independent city-state, with its citizens feeling more loyalty to it and, to a lesser extent, the United Nations than to the US government. This loss of national identity was a natural consequence of human colonization of other planets and systems.

The Zone was the hometown of Avery Junior Johnson, and the home of an AMG Transport Dynamics facility.
