The Halo 3 campaign level that would come to be known as Cortana in the game's final release was originally planned to be much more expansive in scope. As the player progressed through the wreckage of High Charity, they would eventually reach the Mausoleum of the Arbiter, where the player would encounter and fight an army of Arbiters that had been reanimated by the Flood. After recovering Cortana, the player would find a damaged Scarab and be confronted by the Gravemind itself. Cortana would control the Scarab in battle against the Gravemind as the player fended off both Flood forms and the Gravemind's tendrils as it attempted to latch onto the Scarab.
