The nation was granted legislative independence in 1931 and the last vestiges of legal dependence on Great Britain were removed in 1982. Canada was a founding member of the United Nations. Eventually, it, along with Mexico and the political remnants of the United States of America became part of the loose association known as the United Republic of North America, itself under the direction of the Unified Earth Government along with all other UN states on Earth. When the Covenant invaded Earth in November of 2552, the Ohio city of Cleveland came under assault. Refugees fleeing the occupied city crossed Lake Erie to Canada on boats.[2]
