Visegrad at Dawn

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

On July 24, 2552, a communication relay fifty klicks from Visegrad has gone offline, cutting off the planet Reach from the rest of the UNSC. Though local insurgents are considered the likely culprits, the truth is far more horrific than anyone could have imagined.[1]

Visegrad at Dawn is a short Halo universe documentary uploaded to Halo Waypoint in 2010.[1] The short is predominantly focused on the early stages of the Fall of Reach, explaining the background for the Winter Contingency level in Halo: Reach.

Video transcript[edit]

The planet Reach. Next to Earth, this is humanity's most critical planetary asset. Reach is one of the UNSC's primary military strongholds, buried deep in human-controlled space and home to 700 million colonists. In July of 2552, a key communications relay goes offline and the planet's central nervous system for outworld communication is completely cut off. This outpost is referred to as the Visegrád Relay, located adjacent to a number of farmers and researchers in the pastoral countryside of the planet. Initially, fireteam troopers were sent in, but when they turned up missing, Colonel Urban Holland decided to send in Spartans. Enter NOBLE Team; six Spartans with an impressive track record of success and the lethal firepower of the UNSC Special Warfare Division to back them up.

At first, rebels are suspected - colonial militants and insurrectionists would not hesitant to throw the UNSC into disarray by severing its most important planet from the pack. But upon arrival at the relay outpost, NOBLE finds something they never expected; after more than 25 years of war, the Covenant had finally found the planet Reach. With the Visegrád Relay offline, Reach's security has been subverted, the planet's communication is dead, WINTER CONTINGENCY is declared, and the UNSC must respond with any local forces they have at their disposal. So they do, to fight tooth-and-nail in order to learn how and why this happened. Nevertheless, the Covenant are now on Reach and though their initial numbers are small and their efforts exploratory in nature, they never leave business unfinished. They won't stop till the planet is cinder and ash, just like all the others.

As the UNSC turns to face their enemy in this dark hour, holding on to hope, to courage, and an unwavering refusal to give the Covenant victory, it remains to be seen if humankind will survive this encounter.
