Scope[edit]
The Marines keep mentioning the 'odd nature' of the scope. Has there been an official source on the way it works?

Favorite weapon in Halo 2[edit]
This has gotta be my favorite. Lasts longer than battle rifle, and I'm a short-midrange headshot master (suck with the sniper though). And the article says "this weapon is primarily useless in Halo 2, unless you manage to land a lucky "chest shot"." Lucky? Not really. Unless they're shielded, I never need more than 1 or 2 shots to kill combat forms. And yes, I do like this more than the energy sword. (the dumb lunge has sent me to my death by falling more than a few times.)
- Well then either you suck with the Energy Sword or you don't know how to press the melee button XD —əґыţєґιιб
Covenant Ergonomics[edit]
When an Elite holds a carbine, something is off about the way it is held. The oddities involved have to do with the way character models hold objects in the game, which all share some common characteristics.
These would be stiff hands and fingers, along with overlapping geometry between the character model and the held object, i.e. clipping. With the Carbine, this is most notable with the Elite's hands. There appears to be only one way in which that hand is held; the two "thumbs" are clenched together, with the two fingers doing the gripping.
Of course, when holding a human weapon, then this pattern is not so prevalent, but it is identical for all Covenant weapons. With the Carbine's grip and stock design, it leads to a very obvious example of clipping. The Elite's fingers are gripped upwards on the handle, the top thumb seems to go through the first hole, but then the clipping occurs.
The bottom thumb clips right through the bottom part of the weapon, and reconnects with the other thumb on the inside of part of the hand. While this is inevitable because of modeling practicalities, it makes it hard to tell exactly what is the correct position for an Elite's digits while holding the weapon.
At first, it looks like the bottom thumb will grip around the back of the bottom protrusion below the primary grip, while the top one will go through the circular hole directly behind the trigger grip, which the two fingers grasp. But despite the large size of the Elite's hand relative to the weapon, it does not look like a comfortably fitting way of holding it. Another possibility is that while the top thumb goes into the hole, the other three digits grip the primary grip and trigger area.
Another, more likely possibility can be seen in the Tan colored Combat-Harness Elite from McFarlane Toys, which comes with a Carbine and Gravity Lift. In that case, the only part of the Elite's hand that grips the Carbine's handle are the two fingers, while the two thumbs are clenched, resting on the outside of the weapon. This seems most plausible, for that pattern fits with how Elites hold other Covenant weapons, like the Plasma Rifle, Pistol, Beam Rifle, and especially the Energy Sword.
Given McFarlane's accuracy with their action figures, this is probably how the Elites hold the Carbine, and the oddities are the result of the geometry clipping, for when you look at the inside part of the Elite's arm, it severely clips into the Carbine.

Regarding my previous edit[edit]
I meant the width of the round multiplied by the length, and then the unit of measurement, which is usually millimeters. My mistake. Smoke My pageMy talk 15:33, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
The Carbine[edit]
The Carbine is my favorite headshot weapon. Once, I shot a Grunt halfway across the map. I know it's a headshot because of grunt birthday party. I would prove my skills online, but I have no Wi-Fi. :_( --Logygorgy 01:30, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, the carbine is epic, and in my opinion, the BR Is overated. Severely overated. Thats all. Meow...I mea-I mean PsychoThunder
In Reach?[edit]
Is this in Reach? Could any information about that be put here? Carbine is one of my favorite weapons. Thanks.
Nope, sorry. It has been replaced by the Needle Rifle. Missing Mandible 00:05, July 2, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for this off topic thing, but, like wtf? I actually prefer the Carbine over the Needle Rifle. I don't understand why Bungie removed it. But they know what they're doing. Vegerot (talk) 16:12, 4 May 2011 (EDT)!!
ESRB[edit]
Because if you would see people dying from radiation poising, it would effect the ESRB rating of the game. Sorry pal, I would elaborate, but I got to go to work now! Vegerot (talk) 07:43, 16 May 2011 (EDT)!
- Essentially, we're seeing the censored version of events. Radiation poisoning; plasma burns; dismembered limbs and general gore are present in the story, though aren't shown because the ESRB would restrict the game's age certificate or even threaten to unrate it if not edited out (games can't be sold without an age-rating).-- Forerunner 17:34, 16 May 2011 (EDT)
- Please provide source that supports that the carbine has been toned down for gameplay and ESRB purposes; I am aware of the former but there is no source that supports the latter. @Vegerot, either provide an actual source or don't quote at all. I am perfectly aware of Forerunner's comment about ESRB, and agree that what he said is perfectly within reasonable grounds. However, there is no source that says that it has been toned down for ESRB purposes, thus why that citation needed template is added. Unless you can find an actual source supporting that comment, it stays that way.— subtank 09:01, 19 May 2011 (EDT)
Find an actual source that says it's been toned down for gameplay purposes. Maybe it's stronger in the books for story telling purposing, but when it comes to games, that's its true version. So until you can find a source about THAT (enfaces), then it should be citation needed. No? Vegerot (talk) 15:50, 19 May 2011 (EDT)
- Simple: gameplay evidence; it takes more shots in Halo 3 than Halo 2. Since there is no consistency between the two, it can be interpreted that that the strength has been toned down from that as depicted in the novels. Regardless, the citation needed template applies to the whole sentence; it remains that there is no official statement about it is only the carbine that contributed to the ESRB issue. To put it further and supporting Forerunner's comment, all Covenant weaponry are toned down from their depictions in the novel. To resolve this issue of such insignificance, the sentence has been removed since, 1) as previously explained, and 2) it breaks the fourth wall.— subtank 18:26, 19 May 2011 (EDT)
Fourth wall? Vegerot (talk) 19:53, 19 May 2011 (EDT)!
- There's dismemberment in black ops and that's rated. —This unsigned comment was made by 173.72.165.136 (talk • contribs). Please sign your posts with ~~~~
- Yeah, the ESRB argument doesn't hold any water. The M rating really doesn't have very tight restrictions on the amount of graphic violence and gore a developer can put in a game. Plenty of other games get away with much more. Hell, by current standards I think Halo only barely makes an M rating. Remove the blood and Flood dismemberment and it could probably be knocked down to a T.--Darth Oblivion 23:11, 30 June 2011 (EDT)
The censoring is partly attributable to graphics. It would take a lot more time and effort to add things like radiation burns, plasma burns, and dismemberment, and in the end such things would not add very much to the story anyway --Sierra 109 10:57, 14 November 2011 (EST)
Covenant Carbine Scope Image[edit]
Does anyone have a screenshot of the sniper's scope of the Covenant Type-51 Carbine? I've been looking around for one, but so far have found nothing yet. Can anyone help out here? I think a screenshot of the Carbine's scope would be a really nice addition to the Gallery section of this article. Xamikaze330 13:52, 3 September 2011 (EDT)Xamikaze330
Carbine A Misnomer[edit]
Giving the title of Carbine to this weapon was a misnomer on Bungie's part. A carbine, in military terminology, is a weapon firing a reduced size rifle round designed for used by vehicle crews, rear area troops, cavalry, paratroopers, officers, and anyone who didn't need or want to carry around a full sized rifle (eg. the WWII M1 Carbine). In the present, a carbine is an assault rifle cut down to a convenient size for troops fufilling the above roles, and is also used widely by soldiers operating in closed, urban enviroments (eg., the modern M4 Carbine). The Covenant Carbine fits neither of these descriptions. In usage, it is more akin to a Covenant version of a Battle Rifle or Designated Marksman Rifle. --Sierra 109 11:23, 14 November 2011 (EST)

- Indeed, quite so. But regardless of the misnomer, the name will have to stay. As I'm sure you're aware. --Xamikaze330 (talk|contribs) 18:46, 28 October 2012 (EDT)Xamikaze330
- It could be that its ammunition is considered pistol-caliber by the Sangheili, which would indeed make it fall within the correct definition of a carbine. Still doesn't give a reason as to why they're using carbines as marksman weapons. It could just be that they're a carbine variant of a larger/longer rifle, and the advent of plasma weaponry rendered these longer rifles obsolete, but they still required marksman weapons so they went with the Type-51. You could come up with a million headcanon reasons, but the truth is simply that Bungie didn't have a whole lot of words left to describe it. Personally I would have called it the Fuel Rod Rifle (in contrast to the Fuel Rod Cannon), or maybe give a fake name to the material of the ammunition it uses and call it that + "Rifle".--File:PENGUIN4.gif|15px]]FluffyEmoPenguin(ice quack!) 12:43, 1 February 2015 (EST)
