Kwassass was an Unggoy stationed on the Covenant supercarrier Sublime Transcendence near the beginning of the Great Schism in November 2552.

Biography[edit]

Service within the Covenant[edit]

During his early life on Balaho, Kwassass developed a fear and hatred of the cold, as he saw many friends and family freeze to death.

He and his tribe had training in the interpretation of human speech for the purposes of transcribing intercepted human communications; however, they were forbidden to read human writing. Aboard the Sublime Transcendence, he was in charge of the maintenance on storage subdeck K.[1] He often traded captured human tapes with other members of the crew.[1] Subsequent to the Fall of Reach, mining equipment used by the Covenant to excavate CASTLE Base on Reach was placed on subdeck K and it became Kwassass' responsibility to make sure it would be repaired and refitted. He considered this task - which he believed would require six months even with the combined efforts of the entire Unggoy tribe living on subdeck K - a tremendous responsibility but also a significant opportunity.[1]

Great Schism[edit]

Several months later, as the ship was over Joyous Exultation with the rest of the Combined Fleet of Righteous Purpose, Kwassass went searching for rumored pods of benzene within Storage Sector Three, amongst a bunch of equipment being studied by a number of Huragok and discovered a NOVA bomb. Oblivious as to the purpose of the object, he began to examine it further. Using the detached control panel for the device, Kwassass managed to activate a recording of a threat from Admiral Whitcomb. After listening to it several times, he had a vague understanding of what it meant, though he did not comprehend the message fully. However, the control panel's power went out, sparking an interest in the nearby Huragok to fix it and give it power.

Kwassass was the only individual near the NOVA bomb to recognize the threat and tried to remove the panel to deactivate the bomb again, but was unable to get past the Huragok that had clustered around it before the bomb detonated. This obliterated the Sublime Transcendence and nearly every ship in the Combined Fleet of Righteous Purpose, along with devastating Joyous Exultation, and shattering its moon Malhiem.[2]
