Biography[edit]

Early Life[edit]

Grim Bear is the daughter of Lieutenant Neha Small Bear, an officer in the 21st Space Assault Battalion who perished during the Battle of Zhoist.[1]

Battle of Netherop[edit]

Main article: Battle of Netherop (2559)

In November 2559, during the rogue AI Cortana's reign over the galaxy, Grim Bear was placed in command of an ODST force called Tango Team alongside Spartan Olympia Vale that was deployed to the world of Netherop aboard the Point Blank-class prowler UNSC Hidden Point. Their aim was to recover the Divine Hand, a weapon that could be used to destroy Cortana's Guardians. Grim Bear was deployed towards the surface of the planet in a D102 Owl insertion craft alongside Vale, Keely Iyuska, Rosa Fuertes, P. Barnes, S. Legowski and the other 12 ODSTs of Tango Team. During their descent, the Divine Hand was fired by Nizat 'Kvarosee and the Defenders of the Sanctum, destroying the 40 Pelican dropships accompanying the Owl and leaving Tango Team the only ones to reach the planet's surface.[2] Upon landing at the summit of the tel were the weapon had fired, Grim Bear had her troops establish a perimeter and scout ahead for a way to infiltrate the base of the tel. She then met with Vale and her scouts before trying to find a way into the tel on the surface. Tango Team was then ambushed by the Defenders of the Sanctum as the Covenant castaways opened up a tunnel directly below their landing zone. Grim Bear's forces were able to repel them despite Legowski and Fuertes going missing.[1]

After the ambush, Tango Team was joined by the remaining forces of Arbiter Thel 'Vadam and Commander Amalea Petrov. After the Arbiter's forces pursued the Defenders of the Sanctum through the tunnels, Grim Bear and Second Squad remained on the surface while Vale, Iyuska, Petrov and First Squad descended into the tel through a ventilation duct.[3] They remained up there for some time, witnessing the second firing of the Divine hand. Noticing a sudden Banished orbital drop, Grim Bear began to set up a defensive line to respond to the oncoming attack. She was then joined by Fuertes and Legowski, who had found their way back to the surface after Fuertes tapped into the power of the tel and was able to tunnel their way out.[4] The forces inside the tel then returned to the surface, and Grim Bear witnessed the delegation between Arbiter Thel 'Vadam and Warmaster Atriox, where the vacuum energy condenser which powered the Divine Hand was ceded to the Banished.[5] After the confrontation, Grim Bear was evacuated from Netherop alongside the rest of the surviving human and Sangheili forces via their Owl dropship to a group of waiting D81-LRT Condor long-range dropships, which took them into slipspace.[6]

Personality and traits[edit]

Grim Bear is described as a gruff, no-nonsense, and patient leader who was well liked by her troops.[1] Although Thel 'Vadam described her as stern-faced,[6] Olympia Vale thought of Grim Bear as a glass-half-full person, which is not common among gunnery sergeants.[1] Grim Bear has a stocky build.[1]
