Anti-Matter is a highly dangerous substance that releases a massive amount of energy when coming into contact with matter, such as air , thus causing an explosion. Anti-Matter is known to occur naturally in extremely small amounts, but can be made artificially in larger, but still extremely small amounts by Humans, however the Covenant are suspected as having a large amount of either natural or artificial Anti-Matter to use as weaponry and possibly a power-source. Humanity is thought to currently have Anti-Matter, but apparently not enough for it to be used as weaponry. The Covenant, however have used Anti-Matter as weaponry on more than one ocasion, but how they get their Anti-Matter remains a mystery.

The Covenant use antimatter as a reactant in ordnance, namely antimatter charges. These charges were used in the Battle over Installation 04 and to destroy Athens Station, Malta Station, and nearly Cairo Station in the Battle for Earth.

Certain Forerunner weapons use antimatter as well; the Z-390 incineration cannon, for example, fires antimatter embedded within streams of energized particles. Converging beam cannons of the Sojourner created paths for antimatter to pursue enemy starships.

The UNSC is known to have established an antimatter production facility on Mercury alongside solar research facilities, however even the UNSC's most advanced laboratories produce less than a gram of antimatter a year.
