Hello everyone,
It's been a while since I've had much contact with the community, all coming down to my personal life, studies and whatnot. As it is, that applies to everyone to some degree, so it's logical to say that the best way to get any sort of wiki work done is teamwork. And I can see that there's definitely such work that can get done with some good teamwork, so I've decided to organise an image tagging competition for everyone to take part in so we can eliminate the huge mass of unused images currently taking up a massive amount of space on Halopedia. This task is one that the administration has been long trying to get done in any efficient way, but so far never managed to.
So what is this image tagging competition about?
For those who aren't aware, Halopedia currently hosts a huge amount of unused images, due to the long-term unnecessary uploading many users did throughout it's time. Because the rate of uploading was so high and the rate of deleting them was very low, over time they're accumulated, and have taken up unnecessary space and slowing down the site. If we could get rid of these, it would be most beneficial. The unused images are accessible via Special:UnusedFiles, which also shows that there is around 1,000 unused images that could be deleted. Imagine all that extra space we'd have if this was carried out!
Ok, so what do I have to do?
Simple, really:
- Go to Special:UnusedFiles.
- Go onto any image listed there.
- Add a deletion template to the image, by going into Edit mode and adding {{Delete|Unused}} to the page.
- Do this to as many of these unused images as you can.
- Use the "This is a minor edit" option underneath the summary bar for each image edit.
What happens after I tag an image?
When an image is tagged, it will be marked in the category "Candidates for Deletion". When all (or at least a huge amount) of the images because tagged, I will run an automatic process which will automatically delete all images in that category. The reason I require them to be tagged beforehand by a helpful community is because deleting them automatically from Special:UnusedFiles isn't possible.
Every and any user is welcome to take part in this activity, be they an admin, rollbacker or regular.
Awards!
- Users who take part in this activity will receive the Halopedia Award:
- Users who tag more than 50 images will receive the bronze Image Tagging award:
- Users who tag more than 150 images will receive the silver Image Tagging award:
- Users who tag more than 250 images will receive the gold Image Tagging award:
So let's get cracking, and happy editing to everyone!

Will you people PLEASE click the frakkin' minor edit option? Grizzlei ♥ ツ
- Or temporarily set your preferences to mark all your edits as minor. Just go to "Preferences". Go to the "Editing" tab and check the box that says "mark all edits minor by default."-- Col. Spartacus Talk Page Contributions 15:19, 9 May 2012 (EDT)
- Ditto Spartacus, although whether or not it's marked as minor makes no real difference. It would be preferable if edits are marked as minor, but given the required efficiency for this kind of work, nobody is going to face consequences for not doing so. - File:Major.png Nìcmávr (Tálk) 15:46, 9 May 2012 (EDT)
Nicmavr, I suggest that participants double-check before they tag the deletion template onto the file. Some files are used unused; they are in a gallery category linked via Gallery template.— subtank 09:00, 10 May 2012 (EDT)
- Shouldn't those types of images be embedded on Halopedia:Used unused images?-- Col. Spartacus Talk Page Contributions 10:07, 10 May 2012 (EDT)
- We could, but there's hundreds of them. And that project page is reserved only for official use if I'm not mistaken.— subtank 10:10, 10 May 2012 (EDT)
- That template kinda confuses me to be honest... what exactly is it used for other than linking to category of images? Anyway, I think the most logical solution would be to check those categories (if possible) and untag images located within them before I run the deletion script. - File:Major.png Nìcmávr (Tálk) 10:52, 10 May 2012 (EDT)
- It was created as a response due to an unnecessary amount of space wasted for galleries, even to the extent that they take more space than the actual content (recent case being, Halo2.com). That, and how Xamikaze330's previous layout for galleries severely impacted the page-loading. As for implementation, the most relevant images should stay in the article whereas the less-relevant ones should remain in the image category. In a way, it also solves our image category issue that has plagued the wiki since 2007. So, killing two birds with one stone. :) — subtank 11:02, 10 May 2012 (EDT)
- So we'd basically see which articles have that template and check the corresponding category and untag images in that category, yes? - File:Major.png Nìcmávr (Tálk) 11:07, 10 May 2012 (EDT)
- Essentially, yes. — subtank 11:11, 10 May 2012 (EDT)

- There's currently 1,035 candidates for deletion - I think we've got them all. Should an admin step in and delete the images now? -Kronos101 18:10, 13 May 2012 (EDT)
- Nay, it turns out there's a heap more; it's just that the Special page generates 1000 images a day. Just keep the work up, I'll handle the time of the deletions :) - File:Major.png Nìcmávr (Tálk) 05:37, 14 May 2012 (EDT)
By the way people, if the competition ends and you don't receive the award you believe you're eligible for, give me a poke about it as I can't possibly track absolutely everybody who's taking part. If you've taken part, you're already welcome to add the Halopedia award to your userpages. - File:Major.png Nìcmávr (Tálk) 05:37, 14 May 2012 (EDT)
